SECTION II.EQUIPMENT DESCRIPTION
2.1. SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
The AN/PEQ-2A is a Class IIIb laser that emits a highlycollimated beam of infrared light for precise aiming ofthe weapon as well as a separate infrared illuminationbeam with adjustable focus. A safety block is providedfor training purposes which limits the operator fromselecting the high power modes. Both beams can bezeroed to the weapon and each other. The beams canbe operated individually or in combination.
The AN/PEQ-2A is for use with Night Vision Devicesand can be used as either a handheldilluminator/pointer or can be weapon mounted withincluded brackets and accessory mounts. In weaponmounted mode, the AN/PEQ-2A can be used toaccurately direct fire as well as illuminate anddesignate targets.

1) AN/PEQ-2A Assembly
The AN/PEQ-2A Assembly is a compact,
lightweight advanced electro-optical assembly
which provides both a highly collimated beam of
infrared energy for weapon aiming and an
adjustable focus infrared beam for target
illumination.
2) Rail Grabber Mounting BracketThe Rail Grabber enables the AN/PEQ-2AAssembly to be attached to all standard weaponmounting rails as defined by MIL-STD-1913.
3) Neck CordThe neck cord is used for portability of the
AN/PEQ-2A. With the neck cord the operator cansecure the AN/PEQ-2A to his wrist or around hisneck.
4) Carrying BagThe AN/PEQ-2A is supplied with a carrying bag.The bag neatly holds all components and is easily
attached to the web belt.
5) Cable Switch, 12 inchThe 12 inch Cable Switch provides fingertip controlof the AN/PEQ-2A using a 2 inch pressure pad.
6) ManualThe manual details operation, maintenance andgeneral information on the AN/PEQ-2A.

7) Batteries (2 AA)Two AA batteries are used as a power supply foroperating the AN/PEQ-2A. The use of high qualitybatteries is recommended.
8) Strap, RetainerThe retainer strap provides a convenient means ofattaching the cable switch to the weapon.
9) Cable Switch, 20 inchThe 20 inch Cable Switch provides fingertip controlof the AN/PEQ-2A using a rubber domed pushbutton.
10) Bracket AdapterThe Bracket Adapter provides compatibilitybetween the TPIAL and the mounting bracketsused on the M2, M60 and M136 (AT4) weapons.
11) Training Extender (Army only)The Training Extender provides compatibilitybetween the TPIAL and the M4/M16A2 mountingbracket when using the MILES training system.

a. Battery InstallationUnscrew the battery caps and install two AA batteries.Orient the batteries as indicated by the markings on the
AN/PEQ-2A body. Re-install battery caps. Hand tightento fully secure caps onto housing and achieve oringsqueeze.

b. Safety BlockThe safety block installed in theTraining Mode (blueside up) prevents the operator from accessing the non-eyesafe modes (AIM HI, DUAL LO/HI, DUALHI/HI).See Figure 3-1a.

A .050 hex head allen wrench is needed to unscrew theblock from the body and re-install it in the Tacticalmode (black side up). See Figure 3-1b.

c. Mode Selector
The Mode Selector is used to set the mode in which theAN/PEQ-2A will operate when the cable switch buttonor push button is depressed. The Mode Selector has 6positions. Positions 3, 4 & 5 can only be accessed withthe Safety Block installed in the Tactical Mode (seeFigure 3-1b). Table 3-1 provides details of the ModeSelector switch functions.

Safety Block should not be removed from TPIAL. TheSafety Block is removed from the following Figure for
clarity purposes only.

d. Button Switch
The integral button switch is used when the AN/PEQ-2A is hand held. Pressing the Button Switch operatesthe AN/PEQ-2A in the operational mode set by themode selector (see paragraph c). When the button isreleased, the AN/PEQ-2A turns off.
A green LED (Figure 3-3) is incorporated into the body
of the AN/PEQ-2A to indicate that the AN/PEQ-2A isON. Whenever AN/PEQ-2A is activated the green LEDwill light and will stay lit until the Button or CableSwitch is released.
If continuous operation of the AN/PEQ-2A is desired,pressing the Button Switch twice in rapid successionwill latch the AN/PEQ-2A ON. The AN/PEQ-2A willremain ON until the push button is pressed a thirdtime.

e. Cable Switch
NOTE
The TPIAL comes with a jack plug installed in theremote cable jack port which must be removed before
intalling a cable switch
The Cable Switch is used when the AN/PEQ-2A ismounted on a weapon. The cable switch plugs into theback of the AN/PEQ-2A assembly as shown in Figure3-4. Hook and loop fastner tape (Velcro) is provided tosecure the cable switch button or pad to the weapon.
Pressing the button or pad at the end of the cableswitch causes the AN/PEQ-2A to turn on in theoperational mode selected by the mode selector switch.When the button is released, the AN/PEQ-2A turns off.
If continuous operation of the AN/PEQ-2A is desired,then pressing the Button Switch twice in rapidsuccession will latch the AN/PEQ-2A ON. The
AN/PEQ-2A will remain ON until the push button ispressed a third time.
When the cable switch plug is installed in the AN/PEQ-2A, it automatically locks in place. To remove thecable switch, pull back on the plugs sleeve and pull theplug out. DO NOT TRY TO REMOVE THE PLUG BYPULLING ON THE CABLE.

Lens Cap, IlluminatorThe Illuminator Lens Cap, shown in Figure 3-6,contains a diffuser which enables the AN/PEQ-2Ailluminator laser to emit in a 45 degree cone (10 feet at10 feet). To use the lens cap, remove it from its storedlocation on the side of the AN/PEQ-2A by pulling it outand over the front of the focus knob so that its
stretched snug and firmly in place.
Lens Cap, AimingThe Aiming Lens Cap, shown in Figure 3-6, contains aNeutral Density Filter that enables the AN/PEQ-2Aaiming laser to be operated in low power and is usefulduring zeroing to eliminate blooming effects on thetarget. To use the neutral density lens cap, remove itfrom its stored location on the side of the AN/PEQ-2Aby pulling it out and over the front of the aiming beamso that its stretched snug and firmly in place.
When the AN/PEQ-2A is not in use, it should be storedwith the lens caps over the respective output ports.

4.1a M16A2 Mounting Procedure (Figure 4-2)
The TPIAL mounts on the M16A2 rifle using M16A2(NSN 5855-01-446-9545) or M4/M16A2 (NSN 5340-01-390-3812) Mounting Brackets.
WARNING
Make sure the weapon is CLEAR and on SAFEbefore proceeding.
NOTE
Only Small Arms Repairman MOS 2111 (Marine), 45B(Army) are authorized to install the bracket (steps 1
through 4).
(1) Completely disassemble bracket assembly (seeFigure 4-1a) using socket head screw key (3 mmallen wrench) being careful not to lose any parts.

(2) Remove top and bottom handguards from rifle.
(3) Align bracket on barrel ensuring that the notch inthe underside of bracket fits over the gas tube andlocating arm touches inside surface of handguardcap (see Figure 4-1b).
NOTE
Ensure there is equal space between the bracket andbracket caps while tightening mounting screws. Failureto fully tighten screws may cause zero retentionproblems.

(4) Secure bracket to rifle barrel with bracket caps,lock washers and mounting screws. Tighten withsocket head screw key (3 mm allen wrench).
CAUTION
Make sure bracket is installed properly before re-installing handguards. Improperly installed brackets
could cause damage to gas tube or handguard .
(5) Re-install top and bottom handguards to rifle.
NOTE
Failure to fully tighten rail mounting screws andthumbscrew may cause zero retention problems.
(6) Attach mounting rail to bracket posts per Figure 4-2. Secure with 2 hexhead countersink screws.Tighten screws with 3 mm socket head screw key.Completely tighten front screw (closest to muzzle)first before fully tightening rear screw.
(7) Position the TPIAL on the mounting rail as shownin Figure 4-2 and secure with thumbscrew. Useslot on thumbscrew to fully secure TPIAL tobracket rail.
(8) Install the remote switch in a convenient location.Use the retainer straps to secure the remote switchcable to the weapon.

4.1b M4/M4A1 Mounting Procedure(Figure 4-3)
The TPIAL mounts on the M4 Carbine using theM4/M16A2 Mounting Bracket (NSN 5340-01-390-3812).The mounting procedures are identical to the mountingprocedures provided in paragraph 4.1a for the M16A2with the following exception:
The top Inner heat shield must be removed fromhandguard, modified and re-installed in upperhanguard prior to completing bracket installation.
NOTE
The following step needs to be performed at anIntermediate Maintenance Location
(1) Mark location on top inner heat shield thatinterferes with bracket mounting posts and drill two(2) 3/8" diameter holes. Reinstall heat shield inupper handguard and verify that holes in heatshield line up with holes in handguard.
(2) Complete the bracket installation and install TPIALon M4/M16A2 mounting bracket per theprocedures provided in paragraph 4.1a for theM16A2 and as shown in Figure 4-3.

SAW.
(2) Secure Bracket Adapter to AN/PVS-4 MountingBracket using AN/PVS-4 Mounting Screw.
(3) Position the AN/PEQ-2A on the bracket adapter.Tighten the thumbscrew clockwise to secure the

4.1f M60 Mounting Procedure (Figure 4-11)
The AN/PEQ-2A mounts on the M60 Machine Gunusing the M60 Mounting Bracket (NSN: 5855-01-046-7272) and the Bracket Adapter (NSN: 5340-01-362-9873).
WARNING

Failure to fully tighten the Mounting Bracket, BracketAdapter or TPIAL thumbscrew may cause zero

(1) Remove the M60 hinge pin latch and hinge pinfrom the cover assembly. Place the pin latch in theaiming guides on the left side of the MountingBracket and press together (see Figure 4-10).
(2) Place the Mounting Bracket on top of the feedtray cover so that the holes in the front of the bracket
align with the cover assembly pin holes.
(3) Insert the longer hinge pin supplied with thebracket through the bracket and cover assembly andsecure by inserting the hinge pin latch.
(4) Turning counter clockwise loosen the wingnuts on both leg clamps and position the legclamps under the cover assembly. Secure theMounting Bracket by tightening the wing nuts

firmly. The split washer should be next to the wingnut and the flat washer next to the bracket.
(5) Place the Bracket Adapter in the AN/PEQ-2Amounting groove flush with the front of the
AN/PEQ-2A. Tighten the thumbscrew clockwise.Use the slot provided on the TPIAL thumbscrew tofully secure the TPIAL to the bracket adapter.
(6) Position the AN/PEQ-2A with Bracket Adapteronto the M60 Mounting Bracket mounting groove.
Align the front edge of the Bracket Adapter and frontedge of the groove. Tighten the lever screw assembly(see Figure 4-10).
(7) Install the remote switch in a convenient location.Use the retainer straps to secure the remote switchcable to the weapon.

4.1g M2 Mounting Procedure (Figure 4-12)

(1) Release the catch at the left side of the feed traycover and raise the cover to the UP position.
(2) Position the M2 Mounting Bracket assembly overthe breech of the Machine Gun and slide it to the rearuntil it stops beyond the rear edge of the breech (seeFigure 4-12).
(3) Swing the three locking cams to the rear tosecure the bracket to the weapon (side cam first,followed by two top locking cams).
(4) Close the cartridge cover and secure with thecatch.
(5) Use the TPIAL thumbscrew to secure the BracketAdapter to the underside of the AN/PEQ-2A. Use theslot on the TPIAL thumbscrew to fully secure theTPIAL to the bracket adapter.

(4) Position and tighten the Rail Grabber by turningthe knob clockwise. Use the slot on the rail grabbermounting screw to fully secure the bracket to the rail.
(5) Mount the TPIAL to the rail grabber using thethumbscrew as shown in Figure 4-13. Use the slot onthe thumbscrew to fully secure the TPIAL to thebracket.
(6) Install the remote switch in a convenient location.Use the retainer straps to secure the remote switchcable to the weapon..

The AN/PEQ-2A is attached to the M16A2, M4/M4A1or M4 MWS using the Training Extender bracket(A3267739).
WARNING
Make sure the weapon is CLEAR and onSAFE before proceeding.
(1) Mount brackets to the M16A2, M4/M4A1 or M4MWS per instructions provided in paragraphs 4.1a,4.1b or 4.1c, respectively.
NOTE
Failure to fully tighten the Training ExtenderThumbwheel Screw and TPIAL thumbscrew may cause
zero retention problems.
(2) Attach Training Extender to appropriate brackets
as shown in Figures 4-14a and 4-14b and securelytighten using thumbwheel screw.
(3) Mount the TPIAL to the Training Extender Bracketusing the thumbscrew as shown in Figure 4-14. Usethe slot on the thumbscrew to fully secure the TPIAL tothe bracket.

SECTION VZEROING PROCEDURES
5.1 This section provides instructions for zeroing theAN/PEQ-2A on a 25 meter range. The instructionsinclude procedures on how to create offset targets foruse in zeroing the AN/PEQ-2A for a variety of weapons
using standard 25 meter Zeroing Targets (NSN 6920-01-395-2949).
5.2 Zero Preset The AN/PEQ-2A incorporates aunique zero preset feature which enables the aimingand illumination beams to be nearly zeroed when the
AN/PEQ-2A is initially attached to the weapon.
To establish this zero preset, rotate each adjusterclockwise to its end of travel. Then rotate it back 5.5turns and align the white dot on the adjuster with thecenter of the front adjuster flange (pictured below).Caution, do not overadjust.

5.3 ZEROING ON A 25 METER RANGE
This procedure is used to zero the TPIAL to thefollowing weapons for the distances listed in Table 5-1.

(1) On a 25 meter M16A2 zeroing target mark thedesignated strike point and designated strikezone as shown on the following pages basedon the weapon you are using.
(2) Mount the target on an E silhouette or othersuitable surface at 25 meters.
(3) Set the adjusters to their zero preset positionas described in paragraph 5.2.
(4) Mount the AN/PEQ-2A to your weapon asdescribed in SECTION IV.
(5) Turn the aiming beam on in the low powersetting (AIM LO). Install Aiming Side LensCap with Neutral Density Filter to eliminateexcessive blooming. In high light condition,use AIM HI.
(6) While looking through your Night VisionDevice, press the cable switch button toactivate the aiming beam and aim center ofmass.
(7) Fire a 3 round shot group and note the centerof the shot group relative to the designatedstrike point.

Note
Refer to Tables 3-2 or 3-2a for adjuster rotationand resultant direction of shot group movement.Each adjuster click moves the strike point onesquare on the M16A2 25 meter zeroing target.
(8) Adjust the aiming beam adjusters to move thecenter of the shot group to the designatedstrike point.
(9) Fire another 3 round shot group and againobserve the center of the new shot grouprelative to the designated strike point.
(10) When 2 out of 3 rounds are in the designatedstrike zone you are zeroed.
(11) Once the aiming beam is zeroed, rotate theselector knob to the DUAL LO, DUAL LO/HI orDUAL HI/HI mode to observe both aiming andillumination beams. Rotate the illuminationbeam adjusters (Refer to Tables 3-3 or 3-3a)to align the illumination beam with the aimingbeam.

SECTION VI.MAINTENANCE
6.1 Clean the AN/PEQ-2A by flushing with water andwiping with a soft cloth. Such cleaning should be donewhenever the AN/PEQ-2A becomes dirty or afterexposure to salt water.
To clean the aiming and illumination beam windows,wipe using a soft cloth with clean water, alcohol, orgeneral purpose window cleaner.
Prior to use under water, inspect the O-ring seals in thebattery caps to make sure they are free of sand or dirtparticles. Thoroughly clean the O-rings, battery capsand the back of the battery compartment which sealsagainst the O-ring. If the O-ring becomes cut, nicked,or dried out, the battery cap should be replaced. If thebattery cap is bent, or scratched in the O-ring seatingarea, it should be replaced. Periodically lubricate theO-ring with fluorinated grease.
A list of repair parts is contained in Appendix C. Allrepair parts can be installed at the operator or unitlevel. Special tools or equipment are not required formaintaining the AN/PEQ-2A.

B-1. General
This appendix provides a summary of the maintenanceoperations for the AN/PEQ-2A. It authorizes levels ofmaintenance for specific maintenance functions onrepairable items and components and the tools andequipment required to perform each function. Thisappendix may be used as an aid in planningmaintenance operations.
B-2. Maintenance Function
Maintenance functions will be limited to and defined asfollows:
a. Inspect. To determine the serviceability of an itemby comparing its physical, mechanical, and/or electricalcharacteristics with established standards throughexamination.

b. Test. To verify serviceability and to detect incipientfailure by measuring the mechanical or electricalcharacteristics of an item and comparing thosecharacteristics with prescribed standards.
c. Service. Operations required periodically to keepan item in proper operating condition, i.e., to clean
(decontaminate), to preserve, to drain, to paint, or toreplenish fuel, lubricants, hydraulic f luids, orcompressed air supplies.
d. Replace. The act of substituting a serviceable liketype part, subassembly, or module (component orassembly) for an unserviceable counterpart.
e. Repair. The application of maintenance services(inspect, test, service, adjust, align, calibrate, replace)or other maintenance actions (welding, grinding,riveting, straightening, facing, remachining, orresurfacing) to restore serviceability to an item bycorrecting specific damage, fault, malfunction, or failurein a part, subassembly, module (component orsubassembly), end item, or system.

D-1. Scope
This appendix lists integral components of the basicissue items for the AN/PEQ-2A to help inventory itemsrequired for safe and efficient operation.
D-2. General
This Components of End Item List is divided into thefollowing sections:
a. Section II. Integral Components of the End Item.These items, when assembled, comprise the AN/PEQ-2A and must accompany it whenever it is transferred orturned in. The illustrations will help identify theseitems.
b. Section III. Basic Issue Items.These are the minimum essential items required toplace the AN/PEQ-2A in operation, to operate it, and toperform emergency repairs.
Although shipped separately packed, they mustaccompany the end item during operation andwhenever it is transferred between accountable officers.

The illustrations will assist with hard-to-identify items.This manual is the authority to requisition replacementBII, based on TOE/MTOE authorization of the end item.
D-3. Explanation of Columns
a. Illustration.This column is divided as follows:
(1) Figure number. Indicates the figure's number forthe illustration on which the item is shown. (2) The number used to identify the item called out inthe illustration.
b. National Stock Number.Indicates the National Stock Number assigned to theitem which will be used for requisitioning.
c. Description.Indicates the Federal item name and, if required, aminimum description to identify the item. The partnumber indicates the primary number used by themanufacturer, which controls the design andcharacteristics of the item by means of its engineeringdrawings, specifications, standards, and inspectionrequirements to identify the item or range of items.Following the part number, the CAGEC is shown inparentheses.
d. Location. The physical location of each item listedis given in this column. The lists are designed toinventory all items in one area of the major item beforemoving on to an adjacent area.

e. Usable on Code. If the item is not the same fordifferent models of the equipment, the Usable On Codewill be listed in this column. If no Code is listed, thenthe item is common to all models. The Codes are asidentified below:
