GCSE exams commence
It seems not long since we started back into the new term and
once again our newsletter indicates we are approaching the
Easter holidays. As always the term has been packed with
events, activities and great learning opportunities for all our
students at Longfield.
It is wonderful to see the sunshine and blue skies as we move
into Spring, and once again we find ourselves coming into the
final stages of the academic year for many of our older
students. Public exams start quite early into the next term and
we know students are working exceptionally hard to prepare for
these important exams. For many of our year 11 and Post 16
students they are beginning to move into a time of revision and
consolidation of learning. After school, weekend and holiday
revision sessions are being run in virtually every subject and it is
great to see so many of our students taking advantage of the
great additional opportunities that are being offered by our
dedicated staff. We wish all our students every success for their
exams and look forward to celebrating in August with some
great results. We are also delighted that so many of our year 11
students have chosen to apply to come back to Longfield for
their Post 16 phase of education.
The extra curricular trips and events that form an integral part
of life at Longfield have continued throughout the term. This
newsletter includes a report from our traditional visit to
Denmark, alongside other new events that have widened the
experience of our students. As we speak, we also have sports
trips to Antigua (cricket) and Austria (skiing) and we are all
looking forward to hearing about those experiences.
Finally we would like to congratulate our Leigh Academies Trust
colleagues at Hartley Academy on their outstanding Ofsted
inspection. As one of our main feeder schools, we are so
pleased to see our students coming from such a great
beginning. It is an excellent achievement and a fitting legacy for
Mrs Hollingsworth to leave as she retires this term. We wish her
a long and happy retirement!
We hope that all our students, staff and families have a restful
break and look forward to welcoming everyone back on
Monday 11th April.

Outstanding Money In ParentPay - For Leavers
As we move towards the exam season and the end of another academic year I would like to make parents and carers aware of the situation with regard to balances left in your child’s dinner money account.
While students remain at the Academy funds that remain in their ParentPay accounts at the end of each academic year are carried forward until the student leaves Longfield Academy.
If your child is likely to leave the Academy this summer then please monitor the amount in their account carefully to ensure that any remaining balance is used. Only leavers with a balance of over £5.00 will be given a refund on the remaining amount and a request must be received from the parent or carer in order to action this.
Any refund requests should only be made once the student has left and their final balance is clear. Refund of balance requests should be made by email to [email protected] who will then pass them to Cucina, who run the Helix Restaurant. Wherever possible refunds will be made via your ParentPay account and money will return to the card that was used to make your most recent payment.

‘HANGRY’ CHILDREN
and the effects of stress in school due to lack of nutrition.
A focus morning held in school on Tuesday 23 February found that 80% of students become ‘stressed’ and angry as the day
goes on (response to questionnaire completed by students). The facilities in school are there to avoid this problem, we need
to bring this percentage down! Help us to help your children!
They identified that when they become hungry or haven’t drunk water
they feel that their behaviour changes. Large number of students report
they have not eaten breakfast and survive on sweets throughout the
day.
Please remember this school has facilities to
purchase both food and water.
There are water stations throughout the school in every plaza and the Helix. Clear water bottles can be used to fill for use
throughout the day. Food is always available before school, at break and lunch through the biometric system (with cash in
special circumstances).
Having reviewed behaviour logs, students comment that often poor behaviour, poor concentration and feeling stressed is a
result of not eating or drinking.
Children that start the day with this end the day like this
Please encourage your child to eat at the
beginning of everyday in readiness for
learning!
Eat better,
Feel better,
Achieve
more.

Year 10 Work Experience
A big thank you to all students and parents who have found placements for the 18th- 22nd July – it is encouraging to see that we will have at least 70% of the Year 10 students experiencing the world of work.
We do, however, have a number of students who are still looking for a placement. Are you able to help? Do you offer work placements? The week is 18th -22nd July, there is no payment involved, just the chance to give our students some valuable life skills. We have to carry out a health and safety check for each placement and ‘Public Liability Insurance’ is a ‘must-have’. If you think you could help us then please contact Mrs Tamsin Mutch at the following e-mail address. [email protected].
Year 10 and 9X Careers Workshop – 18th April 2016
On 18th April we are delighted to be inviting guests from the world of industry to work with our students.
The day will involve a workshop with an enterprise theme and a second workshop based on applying for jobs, looking at CVs and interviewing skills. All students will be school based and expected to be in usual school uniform.
Thursday 3rd March was the 19th World Book Day. Longfield Academy celebrated World
Book Day throughout the week. There were tutor time activities which included a quiz on
popular literature as well as members of staff discussing their favourite books from their
childhood/teenage years. Perhaps the best thing about the day
was the look on students’ faces!
On World Book Day itself, each department represented a book, staff then came to school dressed
up as a character from their chosen book. There was an excellent atmosphere around the school see-
ing various staff members in their finery. Students (and staff) had the opportunity to vote for the best
dressed teacher as well as the best department. Miss Twigger (English) won Best Dressed, and the
English department won Best Dressed Faculty for all their characters from ‘Alice in Wonderland.’
The Maths Department were ‘Where’s Wallies?’
The Humanities Department were cowboys from
‘The Lonesome Dove’
The MFL Department were ‘The Three Musketeers.’
Year 9 visited Ypres in Belgium on the 11th March to find out about the First World War. They all had a great day out and the weather was unusually hot for the time of year. Ypres was very busy with visitors, as this year marks the centenary of the fighting in World War One. Students tunnelled under the woods at Hill 62 and walked through the muddy trenches. They then visited Tyne Cot cemetery and paid their respects to the fallen soldiers by signing their names in the book of condolence. Some students used their iPads so they could carry on their research back in England. Students were shown the contrast at the smaller, darker, German Langemark cemetery. The Menin Gate was visited in the town centre, which contains over 50,000 names of soldiers whose bodies were never found. One student found the name of a relative. The day was completed in the traditional way, through the purchasing of the delicious Belgian chocolates. Thanks to all the staff who supported this visit, over a very long day.
Mr Chambers
In the February half term, Miss Charles set Longfield students a challenge: cook or bake a dish from France, Spain or any Spanish or French speaking country.
Students had to find the perfect recipe and record their cooking/baking using videos or photos.
We were inundated with entries from students ranging from Year 7 to year 13 students (from the professional catering course). We even had a few staff entries.
Some students edited some fantastic videos on their iPads, others used Pic Collage to present their work, whilst others brought their dish into school for Miss Charles and the MFL department to taste.
The jury of MFL teachers and the two principals, Mrs Davis and Mrs O'Donnell, chose the winners last week. They were all presented with cooking utensils and baking accesories by Miss Charles.
1st Place:
Tyler Wales (Croque-monsieur)
Miss Grant also won the Staff competition with her beautiful Tarta de Santiago.
Well done to everyone who took part and look out for the next competition. This will be announced in your Spanish and French lessons in the next few days.
Miss Charles
Runner Ups:
Lauren Hunt (Paella)
James Black (Profiteroles)
Alexandra Lewis ( Ratatouille)

FEBRUARY 16TH 2016
LEEDS CASTLE ENGLISH REVISION CONFERENCE 38 talented English students, spanning five of our Trust Academies, were selected to participate in a truly unique and inval-
uable GCSE English revision conference; this was held over half term on the 16th February 2016, at the impressive Leeds
Castle. The conference was fully funded by the Trust, as a means of supporting some of our most academically promising
students and encouraging them to aspire to achieving the very top A/A* grades.
Some of our most gifted and dedicated English specialists led the revision sessions, all of which focused on honing the skills
required to achieve academic excellence this summer. Each student had the opportunity to attend five discrete revision
sessions, in very small groups of no more than 14; in addition they experienced the thrilling, ancient art of falconry, led by
the Head Falconer at Leeds Castle.
STUDENT COMMENTS

TEACHER COMMENTS
“The students behaved exceptionally well and it was a stunning venue…”
“Beautiful and awe inspiring venue…”
“It was a great way of getting students out of their comfort zone…”
“Students were engaged throughout every session…”
“Such a delightful day and I enjoyed running my sessions in such a grand space!”
“Students all said they enjoyed the sessions…”
“Some students had never visited a castle before and it’s not their normal “hang out”
during the holidays so it opened their eyes to something new.”
“ It was really nice to accompany the children to their falconry sessions, watching
them learning something new and experience something they will never have done
before - and probably never will again! On a personal level, I thoroughly enjoyed it
- especially Twiglet the Tawny owl.”
“It was a brilliant day and a fantastic opportunity for the students to learn in a mature
environment which should set them up for the future.”
On a final note, I would like to thank everyone who participated in the day and for making it a thor-
oughly productive and memorable experience. In particular, the wonderful staff who sacrificed a day
of their holiday to support the conference; Mrs Burwood from Wilmington Academy, Ms Howlett
from Mascalls Academy, Ms Williams from Longfield Academy and Ms Ball from Stationers’
Crown Woods Academy.
AD MORE ON OUR WEBSITE
Denmark have again been rated as the happiest nation in the world ! No surprise then that the year 8 students who visited Denmark in March had a wonderful trip and are already asking if they can go again next year!
This is the sixth year we have linked with Soholmskolen in Jystrup and the students have been communicating with their penpals since November. The students eventually met, initially all shy, but by the end of the trip strong friendships had been formed.
The group spent one day in school, which is much smaller than Longfield with a total of 180 students and took part in lessons, activities and cultural events in the local area. The new furniture and resources in their library and around the school attracted much attention, great places to read and to chat with friends!
A day in Copenhagen including time at Experimentation , the interactive science museum; a run up the Round Tower; a canal trip and time for shopping was enjoyed by all especially as the sun shone all day! Students also spent time in their penpals’ homes, sampling family life and enjoying danish home cooking. The highlight was undoubtedly the evening at the youth centre including the football competition, dancing and air hockey! We look forward to the Danes visiting us in June and share with them an insight into our world! Ms Walker
The Start of Alumni
Did you attend Longfield Upper, Axton Chase or Longfield Academy?
Here at Longfield we have started a new project called the Alumni which is run by a charity called Future First, it is for all
former and current students to connect with old friends and see how the school has changed over the years.
On our website we have an Alumni page that will be updated on a weekly basis with pictures from previous school years and
general information on events taking place.
To sign up it’s easy and free, go onto our school website and sign up under our LAT Alumni page. You can also join our
Facebook and LinkedIn pages. Or just follow the link below.

GCSE P.E.
Our year 9 and 10 groups have had a P.E kit makeover. All pupils participating in GCSE PE now
have a smart new kit. The kit has the school logo on the front and their Surnames on the back,
with numbers for easy moderation of Sports for their assessment.

On 27th February, our years 7 and 8 cheerleading team, (LA Cheer) went to the Legacy Cheer and Dance
Regional Competition held at the Copper Box, Olympic Park. The girls were competing in the level 1
youth Prep category, against others school and youth clubs. For their first ever competition the girls
were performing in front of thousands of spectators, and did us really proud finishing in a fantastic 2nd
place.
Cheerleading club is on Wednesday after school 2-3pm in the sports hall. It is open to all girls and
boys in years 7 / 8 and 9 Please see Mrs Davies if you are interested in joining the cheerleading club.
It is that time of year again where Sainsburys are handing out Active School Vouchers up to the 3rd May,
when you do your shopping or fill up your car. We are able to use these vouchers to buy sports equipment to
help support and develop sports at Longfield Academy.
Please ask your friends and family for any vouchers that they might have as they do make a big difference.
I would just like to take this opportunity to remind you of our P.E kit policy especially as the warm weather starts to arrive.
All students are required to bring & wear the appropriate kit to each and every lesson if they are participating or not. Any student who fails to bring kit will be loaned an alternative for that lesson, where one is available. This must be returned at the end of the lesson and a sanction given in line with the school's PE behaviour management policy. Students who are injured or unable to participate physically in a lesson must bring a note excusing them from the lesson in addition to bringing and wearing their kit. Any injury that requires a student to be excused for a period of time greater than 2 weeks must be covered by a Doctor's/Hospital note. Please be aware that in the interest of student welfare and Government guidelines students excused for any reason must also change into school PE kit. Students excused from practical participation in a lesson will still accompany the lesson and be the responsibility of the teacher leading the lesson. Each student will be provided with an educational task related to the activity being taught which will assist the development of his or her organisation, observation, evaluation and leadership skills, whilst not being practically active. In light of this policy it is strongly recommended that students wear a tracksuit in the lesson, particularly when excused from practical involvement. Changing into PE kit will prevent students from having to spend the remainder of the day in potentially dripping wet or muddy clothing and footwear. Failure of students excused from lessons to bring their kit to lessons will result in a sanction in line with the school's PE behaviour management policy. A detention will be given. Exceptions to this policy will only apply to those students who are physically unable to change due to the nature of their injury. Such severe injuries must be accompanied by a Doctor's/Hospital note on headed paper.
Thank you for your Cooperation.
