Netiquette
• Do’s- Read before you post messages.- Try to keep your postings brief and easy to read.- Be kind when others make mistakes online.
• Don’t- Don't use fonts that are hard to read, and remember that people can only see your
font if they have it installed on their computer as well.- Do not take things from other people's web sites without permission and post
them elsewhere online.
Copyright and Fair Use
• Copyright- the exclusive right to make copies, license, and otherwise exploit a literary, musical, or artistic work, whether printed, audio or video.
• Fair Use- the conditions under which you can use material that is copyrighted by someone else without paying royalties.
Plagiarism
• Plagiarism is the act of taking another person's writing, conversation, song, or even idea and passing it off as your own.
• To avoid plagiarism, you must give credit whenever you use:
-another person’s idea, opinion, or theory; -any facts, statistics, graphs, drawings—any pieces of
information—that are not common knowledge; -quotations of another person’s actual spoken or written
words; or -paraphrase of another person’s spoken or written words.
Technology to Prevent Plagiarism
• Doc Cop offers a free service for checking small documents and a free service for checking documents against each other. Doc Cop also offers a fee based service that will check large documents and do a more comprehensive check than that offered for free.
• The Plagiarism Checker, created as a project for the University of Maryland, is an easy-to-use tool for detecting plagiarism. Simply enter a chunk of text into the search box and the Plagiarism Checker will tell you if and from where something was plagiarized.
Internet Safety
• Always read a website's privacy policy before giving any personal information. Also make sure that a website offers a secure connection before giving credit card information.
• Keep personal information (address, phone number, etc.), feelings, or personal photos private so a bully can’t abuse them.
• Always use a strong password. The password should be a combination of alphabets, number and special characters. Password should never be a dictionary word as they easy to break. Password should have a length of size greater than 8 characters. Never store your password anywhere, memorize it. Never tell your password to others.
Computer Safety
• Use antivirus software and keep it up-to-date.
• Use a firewall. No Internet connection is safe without one.
• Secure your browser. • Treat IM suspiciously. Instant Messaging is a
frequent target of worms and trojans.
