DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE Dear Colleague,
I am very pleased and proud to write just as we have successfully completed our Unification.
The past months have demonstrated what can be achieved when Individuals and Teams work
together to identify the best solution for our future joint-working.
Our engagement and discussion exercise produced 127 Question & Answers; several Departmental
meetings incl. one to ones and around 10 updates to our structure! This was a tremendous exercise
made easier by the support of our Staff Side and Human Resources colleagues.
The UHSM rebanding of our AFC2 roles to AFC3 was a particularly pleasing result reflecting the
changed and changing role of those staff. The achievement of banding equity across our two Trusts
is a firm foundation upon which to drive forward modernisation and improvement.
Our extended International House Offices are now available providing a really
professional working environment along with hot desking facilities.
In reality, despite all the above our real work starts now! - to provide not just
the biggest NHS Procurement Service but also the best - I know that together
we will achieve this.
Thank you for all that you do. Simon Walsh MCIPS Procurement Director

Amy Emmerson, Purchasing
Manager (CMFT) & Stacey Williams,
Senior Buyer (UHSM) recently
attended Procurex:
“On Tuesday 21st March, Stacey Williams and I spent the morning at Procurex England North
2017 at Manchester Central. The event was billed as opportunity to hear about how the
procurement industry is adding value, increasing efficiency and proving collaboration offers
opportunity. We visited the Keynote Arena and attended the sessions lead by Sean Anstee,
Conservative Mayoral Candidate and Leader of Trafford Council; Malcolm Harrison, Chief
Executive at Crown Commercial Service and Frank Tudor, Head of Procurement at Transport for
Greater Manchester. The event was well attended and gave a good overview of the
challenges faced by the wider public sector and the on-going emphasis on collaboration. “
On March 30th, Simon & Ross
presented to a group of Dutch
trade delegates at Citylabs as
part of a Healthcare and
Medtech Networking Event. The
group had also visited Healthcare
Organisations in London and
Birmingham, arranged principally
by the Dutch Embassy and more
locally by the Netherlands Business Support Office (NBSO). Ross spoke of the visit:
“Simon and I gave an outline of the history of the NHS and how it is structured as well as how
Procurement works in practice at a European, National, Local and Trust level, including an
insight into how we operate as a department and the forthcoming unification of CMFT & UHSM
procurement departments.
Of specific interest to the delegates are the options available for suppliers to access the NHS IT
market, which was also discussed.
The presentation provoked some interesting & lively debate and was overall a very an
enjoyable experience. Importantly the delegation gathered some key information to further
enhance their offer to the UK NHS market.”

Abigail Hay will be leaving Akeso & co later this month. She has worked closely with
the team and sent this message:
“Hi Simon, Linda,
Thank you for the kind words. It has been a rewarding two and a half years working
with Shelford procurement. I am probably not supposed to admit to having
favourites, but I have especially enjoyed working with the team at CMFT. It has been
an honour to work with you, I have learned a huge amount and have always
enjoyed my visits to Wilmslow Park, where you have always hosted me very warmly.
As I mentioned yesterday, Jamie and I will be starting married life by moving to
Scotland, which is why I have made the decision to leave Akeso. I will definitely
continue to work in the sector and I hope to work together again in the future.
