Team of the week: Brenham The Cubs no longer count them-
selves in the ranks of the winless after a29-14 victory over Bryan. Steve Stack-house completed 11-of-19 passes for 149yards and a touchdown, and RickyBrown scored on a pair of short-yard-age plunges to help Brenham pull awayin the middle two quarters. The Cubsled 15-7 at halftime and 29-7 going intothe final period. Considered a favoriteto make a run at a district title, Bren-ham struggled out of the gate with apair of quality nondistrict opponents inMagnolia West and Magnolia. Despitea couple of early blemishes on their rec-ord, the Cubs should enter district playbattle-tested.
Player of the week: Kaden Watts,Brenham
The Cubs didn’t just make plays onoffense, they were successful in allthree phases of the game in their winover Bryan. Not only did they hold theVikings to just over 100 yards of totaloffense, but a pair of punt returnsfrom Kaden Watts helped swing themomentum in the Cubs’ favor forgood. Watts ran back a 60-yarder inthe first half for a touchdown thatgave his team the lead. A 40-yard re-turn in the second half set up the sec-ond of Brown’s two touchdown runsand made the score 29-7.
The rest of the district Cedar Creek couldn’t keep pace with
Leander in a 37-9 loss on the road.While the defeat knocked the Eagles toan 0-3 record in nondistrict, there werea few bright spots for Cedar Creek.Quarterback Bryan Allen’s 5-yard runin the fourth quarter was the firstpoints of the season for the Eagles, whowould add a 27-yard field goal later inthe period as well. … Glenn was able toput up yards, but a pair of turnoversand a safety were too much to over-come in a 22-7 loss at the hands of Pflu-gerville. … Connally got its first win of
the year down at House Park by knock-ing off McCallum 24-17. … Bastrop con-tinued to struggle through nondistrictplay against a high-powered Johnsonteam, falling 55-0. … Weiss scored 40unanswered points to blow pastRouse in a 54-20 win for the Wolves.Standout Raiders (2-1) quarterbackMason Shorb had a solid day even indefeat, throwing for 254 yards and apair of touchdowns. … East View (1-2)couldn’t pick up a win in the HillCountry, falling 32-20 to CanyonLake. The Patriots were able to keepthings close in the first half, but theHawks pulled away late thanks to astrong ground-based attack that keptthe powerful Patriots offense on thesideline for long swaths of time. ... Elgin(0-3) suffered is second shutout loss inthree games with a 51-0 defeat at thehands of Bryan Rudder. The Ranger got270 yards and a pair of touchdownsthrough the air from quarterback E.J. Ezar.

GEORGETOWN — Now in its thirdseason as a varsity program, Weiss hasshown plenty of improvement.
But head coach Jenny Richardsonand the Georgetown volleyball teamtook advantage of Weiss’ youth andmistakes Sept. 7, claiming a four-setvictory, 25-15, 19-25, 25-13, 25-20.
The Eagles (17-14) are now riding athree-match win streak going into Fri-day’s District 25-5A home openeragainst Cedar Park. Weiss (13-8) willhost Manor Friday night in its District18-5A opener.
“I’m proud of my girls,” Richardsonsaid. “I told them their goal was to win(our last three) nondistrict matchesafter a tough tournament schedule,and they did it. In fact, after tonight’swin, they all remarked they reachedtheir goal.”
Weiss made 14 unforced errors in thefirst-set loss and looked disorganizedand unsure of themselves early on.Coach Karen Huffman said slow startshave become too common for a teamwith playoff aspirations.
“We just can’t seem to come out onall cylinders recently,” Huffman said.“That’s one thing we really have towork on going into district. We have tobe better to start matches if we’re goingto do well in district play.”
The Wolves did find some confi-dence in the second set. The Wolvesran off an 8-3 scoring run with the settied at 13-13 to open a 21-16 lead andthen closed it out, 25-19.
But just as confident they were inthe second set, the Wolves lost it in setthree as the Georgetown offense hit itsstride. Freshman 6-foot-4 middle AddyGaido blasted seven of her match-high16 kills in the third for Georgetown,while senior setter Annika Flora added12 assists and two of her match-high sixtotal kills.
The Eagles carried that momentuminto the fourth set and closed out thematch from there.
Flora finished with 38 assists and sixkills to go with the six blocks. Gaido hitat a 31% clip and had three total blocks.
Senior Jaylen Anderson tallied 11kills, eight digs and three total blocksfor Weiss while freshman TakylaBrown chipped in 16 assists, 13 digs andfive kills.
