Gauge: 22 sts x 40 rnds = 4” (10 cm) in Ribbed Pattern. 32 sts x 32 rnds = 4” (10 cm) in Prairie Star St. Abbreviations: BO = Bind Off CO = Cast On K = Knit K3tog = Knit 3 stitches together LH = Left Hand P = Purl PM = Place Marker RH = Right Hand Rnd(s) = Round(s) Sl = Slip SM = Slip Marker St(s) = Stitch(es) Tbl = Through the back loop YO = Yarn Over Special Stitches: Italian CO (1x1 Ribbed st): Hold the yarn across your fingers like a slingshot, and place the needle across the bar in the middle of your fingers. Scoop the needle downward and towards your body to twist into the 1st st. Then, take working needle around the outside of the upper strand of yarn, and under the bottom strand. Next, take the needle under and over the bottom strand, and back to the top. Come around the outside of the bottom strand, and through the middle gap. Next, come over the top of the top strand then bring the needle back around and under the bottom strand to starting position. (Makes 2 sts). Repeat CO until 1 st is

left to make. With the yarn looped around your thumb and pointer finger. Insert the needle from down to up in the loop made around the thumb, release yarn from both and pull tight on needle.

Prairie Star St (K3 out of 3 sts): Sl 2 sts as if to knit, pass them back on LH needle, K3tog tbl (do not drop off LH needle), YO, K3tog tbl again, drop sts off LH needle. (3 sts) Begin Pattern: Using US 5 (3.75 mm) circular knitting needles and Italian CO method, CO 92 (100, 108, 116) sts. PM. Being careful not to twist your sts, join in the rnd. Ribbed Rnd: *[K1, P1]; repeat from * to end of rnd.

Repeat Ribbed Rnd, 9 more times.

Prairie Star Pattern: Change to US 6 (4.0 mm) circular knitting needles. Rnd 1: K all sts. Rnd 2: *[(Sl 2 as if to knit, pass them back on LH needle, K3tog tbl, YO, K3tog tbl), K1]; repeat from * to end of rnd. Rnd 3: K all sts. Rnd 4: K2, *[(Sl 2 as if to knit, pass them back on LH needle, K3tog tbl, YO, K3tog tbl), K1]; repeat from * to last 2 sts, Sl 2 as if to knit, (remove stitch marker to work Prairie Star pattern across the last 2 sts of the rnd and 1st st of the next rnd), pass 2 slipped sts back on LH needle, K3tog tbl, YO, K3tog tbl. Replace st marker between the 2nd and 3rd st of Prairie Star st. Repeat rnds 1-4, 12 times more. Begin Decreases: Note: Switch to DPNs when necessary. Rnd 1: *[K2, K2tog]; repeat from * to last 2 sts, K2tog. (69 (75, 81, 87) sts remain) Rnd 2: *[Sl 2 as if to knit, pass the 2 sts back onto LH needle, K3tog tbl, YO, K3tog tbl]; repeat from * to end of rnd. Rnd 3: K all sts. Rnd 4: K1, [Sl 2 as if to knit, pass the 2 sts back onto LH needle, K3tog tbl, YO, K3tog tbl]; repeat from * to last 2 sts, Sl 2 as if to knit, (remove stitch marker to work Prairie Star pattern across the last 2 sts of the row and 1st st of the next rnd), pass 2 slipped sts back on LH needle, K3tog tbl, YO, K3tog tbl. Replace stitch marker between the 2nd and 3rd st of Prairie Star st. Note: The 1st st of Rnd 5 has already been worked to make the last st of the Prairie Star st. Rnd 5: *[K2tog, K1]; repeat from * to last 2 sts, end with K2tog. (46 (50, 54, 58) sts remain) Rnd 6: *[Sl 2 as if to knit, pass the 2 sts back onto LH needle, K3tog tbl, YO, K3tog tbl]; repeat from * to last st, end with K1. Rnd 7: *[K3tog]; repeat from * until 1 (2, 0, 1) sts left, end with K1 (2, 0, 1). (16 (18, 18, 20) sts remain) Rnd 8: *[K2tog]; repeat from * to end of rnd. (8 (9, 9, 10) sts remain) Finishing: Break end of yarn leaving about 12” of yarn to weave in. Using a yarn needle, thread yarn through remaining 8 (9, 9, 10) sts. Pull yarn end tight to gather top sts of the hat. Weave in all ends. Block if necessary.
