he Newman Catholic Centerhas organized Alternative SpringBreak programs or 17 years.
Doris Nordin, coordinator o Alternative Spring Break at thecenter, oered 11 locations toEastern students this year.
Among these were many thatinvolved working directly withchildren or the disabled. Othersinvolved home repair or working
with those in poverty. Among the 11 locations, nine
were located in the United States,one in Canada, and one in Mex-ico.
“We try to cover all kinds o social issues that aect our lives;some directly and others indi-rectly, which sometimes we don’tsee,” Nordin said. “o raise aware-ness about the possibilities o mak-ing a dierence here or anywhereelse.”
Nordin has attended all the lo-
cations, but this year she chose toattend Glenmary Farm in Vance-burg, Ky.
At this resort, team members worked with the emotionally chal-lenged and also helped with homerepair projects.
“I’ve been in other sites, andI really wanted to be part o theGlenmary Farm Program,” Nordin
said. “he exposure to dierentkinds o realities appeals to me.”
Emily Redmann, a junior ele-mentary education major, chose togo to St. Vincent Center in KansasCity. his is her irst year attend-ing Alternative Spring Break.
“I choose this because I ammajoring in elementary educationand I love working with children.”Redmann said. “I want to help
make a dierence, even i it is justone person, one person can makea dierence. I have traveled withone person rom my team beore,but that is it.”
It was not a hard decision orMax Van Byssum, a biological sci-ences major, when he chose Alter-native Spring Break. He has beenattending since his reshman year.
“I went on (Alternative SpringBreak) last year at the Big Oak Boy’s Ranch," he said. "I had agreat experience last year, it wasnot even a decision to return tothe ranch or a second time. My irst time to the ranch moved meso much because o the amazing
work everyone at the ranch doesto make the lives o the boys therebetter and the opportunity they give them.”
It was Van Byssum’s second yearto attend Alternative Spring Break at Big Oaks Boy’s Ranch in Gads-den, Ala., and next year he planson returning as a site leader.
“I worked cutting down trees
with my group rom 8 a.m. to 1p.m. and then had a break to getready to spend the rest o the day
with the house I was assigned,”Van Byssum said. “A house is madeup o house parents (married cou-ple) and 8 kids with a max o 2 be-ing biological ospring.
“he ranch is beautiul, all 167acres. he ranch provides a truly amazing environment or the kids
to grow.”Nate Atkinson, a graduate com-
puter inormation major, was oneo the students who went to Mex-ico. He was concerned about thesecurity warnings, but would be ina sae area o the country.
“he idea o a mission trip issomething new, an adventure that
will be ulilling,” Atkinson said.“It’ll be a spiritual experience ol-lowing God’s work or Catholicaith and Christian ways.”
Upon returning to Eastern, At-kinson is already looking orwardto returning to Mexico next year.
“In the morning, we did arm work and in the aternoon we
played with the kids," he said.“Playing with the kids was the bestpart. here are about 130 kids,and not enough adults to show them love and attention. We con-nected with the kids, and they connected with us.”

“Te case is still under investigation… so we can’t speculate on charges,”Schneider said. “Right now, we haven’tlooked at a piece o paper.”
He said he would not theorize on what might result rom the case.
“Tat’s just not good policy,” hesaid. “We don’t do hypotheticals.”
Once the reports are received,they will need to be evaluated and re-viewed.
“It’s going to take a long time to getthis all together,” Schneider said. “Peo-ple hope and anticipate that we willmove quickly in these things, but ittakes a long time.”
