The directory wascompiled by the Alternative Farming Systems Information Center(AFSIC), which is 1 of 10 information centers within the NationalAgricultural Library that provide in-depth coverage of specificsubject areas relating to agricultural sciences. AFSIC focuses onalternative farming systems that aim at maintaining agriculturalproductivity and profitability, while protecting natural resources.The directory includes sections on institutions and organizationsmostly in the United States and Canada with some overseas contacts.Each listing includes address, name of contact person, and a briefprogram description. Included are undergraduate and graduate degreeprograms, extension services, research programs, environmentaleducation programs for elementary and secondary students, workshopsand seminars, multidisciplinary training programs, and informationsources. The guide also provides information on the regional officesof the Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program, whichoffer competitive research grants in agricultural sciences. (LP)

INTRODUCTION TO THE EIGHTH EDITION
Information about the institutions and organizations listed in this directory was compiled froma number of sources. Criteria for selection were an institution's involvement in organic,alternative, or sustainable agriculture, and its focus on education, training, or provision ofinformation. Most are in the United States and Canada, with some overseas contacts. Inclusionof an organization in this directory does not imply a recommendation by the Alternative FarmingSystems Information Center (AFSIC).
AFSIC is one of ten Information Centers at the National Agricultural Library (NAL) that providein-depth coverage of specific subject areas relating to the food and agricultural sciences. AFSICfocuses on alternative farming systems that aim at maintaining agricultural productivity andprofitability, while protecting natural resources, especially sustainable, low-input, regenerative,biodynamic, or organic farming and gardening. Support for the Center comes to the Libraryfrom the USDA's Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) program, which isunder the jurisdiction of the Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service(CSREES).
