Snow White, Cinderella, andGoldilocks all got their happy endings. But happily-ever-after isn’t quite what the gals imagined it would be. It’sjust TOO happy with all the helpfulness, charm, and gen-erosity of their adoring princes! While they are busy plan-ning ways to bring a bit more normalcy into their lives, another princess is hoping to find her own happy ending.
Princess Wallflower is considering many suitors, but sheonly wants the handsomest of them all. When the vile, scheming Bad Bart kidnaps her, the princess is initiallyimpressed by his handsomeness and agrees to marry him.So much for first impressions! Once she realizes he’sbad (after all, it’s in his name), she begins to hope a hand-some prince will come to her rescue. Of course, all theprinces in the kingdom are out searching for her, includ-ing the hubbies of Snow White, Cinderella andGoldilocks. This gives the ladies a chance to get back tonormal. And what lucky suitor shall win the hand of thebeautiful Princess Wallflower? In an ironic twist with anice message to boot, it might just be Bernard the Beast. For reservations call Ethel at 518-237-6936. We ask thatall ticket be prepaid.

FIVE RED FLAGS THAT SPOOK YOUR LENDER
Curt Covington, senior vice president of agricultural finance at Farmer Mac says thefollowing red flags won’t guarantee a farmingoperation will fail, but they will cause lendersto worry it is headed in the wrong direction.1. Farmers who were spendthrifts during goodtimes. When corn was above $7 per bu., a lotof farmers made a lot of money. That’s goodnews – if the money was spent wisely,Covington says. “The good news is, a lot of farmers have built up some working capital and
liquidity the past few years,” he says. “This isthe best test – what did a farmer do during the good times? Leverage kills – it’s not just aboutprofitability, it’s what you did with those profits.”2. Farmers who still have variable-rate debt. Although the Federal Reserve elected to keep interestrates unchanged in a Sept. 17 announcement, that move stunned many in the market, who nowexpect interest rates to inch higher starting Q1 of 2016.Will farmers be able to absorb those higher interest rates on variable-rate debt? Probably – butnot without putting a pinch on other areas of the business, Covington says.“If you have variable-rate debt, it’s time to start fixing those debts,” he says. “It couldn’t be abetter time, in my opinion.”3. Farmers who struggle with control ling costs. A lot of farmers have already gone to landlords tonegotiate rent reductions, Covington says. But while that’s a good move, it shouldn’t be the firstmove, he adds. He suggests farmers should review the top 20% of their vendors on an annualbasis. “Are you challenging those vendors for the best deals?” he asks. “Make sure you’ve reallygot it down to the lowest price and the best quality match. You have to challenge yourself on theexpense portion of your income statement. Expense control is A No. 1.”4. Farmers who rely more heavily on inventory than cash. Not all assets are created equally,Covington says. For example, stored grain certainly has value, but cash is faster and easier towork with. And for stored grain, farmers may be overestimat ing the value of what’s in the bin, hesays, especially when commodity volatility can quickly shift corn prices.5. Farmers who don’t communicate. “Constant communication” is a best practice Covington
stands by, whether that be communication with vendors, lenders or even others within the farmingoperation. “Use your vendors, your banker, even your CPA and attorney,” he says. “They’reservicing hundreds of other farmers in many cases. Ask them about the best practices they’reseeing with other clients.” Keep communication lines strong among all key farm stakeholders,Covington adds. Like any other problem, a farm conflict is best dealt with sooner rather than laterafter it has festered or worsened, he says.

Blinky’s Random Thoughts
Yankees legend Yogi Berra passed away last Tuesday at the age of 90.An 18-time All-Star, Berra appeared in 14 World Series as a member of the Yankees and won 10 of them. A sportswriters’ favorite, Berra hadcountless expressions and turns of phrase that were memorable becausemost of them didn’t make any sense. (At the same time, every one had
some truth to it.) Berra-isms (colloquial expressions that lack logic) are now countless, andmany of them are just attributed to Berra, even if he never actually said them. As he so perfectlyput it: “I never said most of the things I said.” Here are some favorites.1. When you come to a fork in the road, take it.2. You can observe a lot by just watching.3. It ain’t over till it’s over.4. It’s like déjà vu all over again.5. No one goes there nowadays, it’s too crowded.
6. Baseball is 90% mental and the other half is physical.7. A nickel ain’t worth a dime anymore.8. Always go to other people’s funerals, otherwise they won’t come to yours.9. We made too many wrong mistakes.10. Congratulations. I knew the record would stand until it was broken.11. You better cut the pizza in four pieces because I’m not hungry enough to eat six.12. You wouldn’t have won if we’d beaten you.13. Never answer an anonymous letter.14. The future ain’t what it used to be.15. I tell the kids, somebody’s gotta win, somebody’s gotta lose. Just don’t fight about it. Justtry to get better.16. Pair up in threes.17. You’ve got to be very careful if you don’t know where you are going, because you mightnot get there.18. Even Napoleon had his Watergate.19. He hits from both sides of the plate. He’s amphibious.20. I don’t know (if they were men or women fans running naked across the field). They hadbags over their heads.21. I’m not going to buy my kids an encyclopedia. Let them walk to school like I did.22. It ain’t the heat, it’s the humility.23. So I’m ugly. I never saw anyone hit with his face.24. Little League baseball is a very good thing because it keeps the parents off the streets.25. I’m lucky. Usually you’re dead to get your own museum, but I’m still alive to see mine. There were many, many more. Regarding his own death he said, “Had I known I was going tolive this long, I wouldn’t have wasted so much time.”

HARRY ORLYK’S WORK WILL BE EXHIBITED ATMCCARTEE’S BARN in Salem, New York from throughOctober 31st. The exhibition of fifty paintings, curated by EveraSue Clary, provides an in-depth look at the artist’s work from1985-2015, which embodies the pure essence of landscape paint -ing, Orlyk’s paintings are rooted in the seasonal landscapes of Washington County. They have echoes of the Hudson RiverSchool, but filtered through the use of color and composition of the Abstract Expressionists. They are strikingly beautiful. Thewinter paintings are composed of a pallet of umber, browns andeggshell whites that capture the barren beauty of the land. Mar-malade oranges and cobalt blues evoke the vividness of a hotsummer afternoon. Orlyk’s work is ambitious. Because he pro-duces a painting a day his work transcends predictable landscapepainting. He calls it a “portrait of days”: an evolving visual jour-nal of sunlight, land and his own emotional response to a senseof place. “The land is a friend of mine. I enjoy sitting down andlistening to it.”His painting process is unconventional. Every afternoon he getsin his van, carefully chooses his location, clamps his canvas tothe steering wheel, and paints. He always asks permission of the
people who own the land. As a result he forges a connectionwith them.Orlyk was born in 1947 in Troy, New York. He attended gradu-ate school at University of Nebraska at Lincoln, where he wastaught by a number of influential Nebraskan painters. For overforty years he has consistently shown his work across the coun-try, including the Carrie Haddad Gallery in Hudson, New Yorkand the Beamesderfer Gallery in Highland Park, New Jersey, aswell as internationally. In 1995 he was the recipient of aGuggenheim Fellowship. He lives in Salem, New York with hisfamily. For further inquires please contact Evera Sue Clary,McCartee’s Barn, 518 854 3857 [email protected]
