WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT NEW YORK CULTURE IN THE FALL?
DOWNTOWN ADVISORY BOARDCOMMUNITY LEADERS WHO HAVE HELPED BUILD THIS AREA AND GUIDE OUR COVERAGE OF IT
RORY McCREESHFOUNDER,
DUCE CONSTRUCTION
My favorite place to take in New York culture is the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Not only is this museum home to some of the most magnifi cent artwork in the world, it also houses architectural and historical won-ders. The best part about the Met is that when you walk out, you are surrounded by some of the most signifi cant buildings in New York’s history; each build-ing is a work of art in its own right.
OLGA SIVKOVAOWNERR, ART ET
MAISON
JEFF SIMMONSEXECUTIVE
VICE PRESIDENT, ANAT GERSTEIN INC.
For me, Lower Manhattan’s one square mile is over-fl owing with culture. I step outside of my Broadway building and can experience art and culture from the theater—at Pace University’s Michael Schimmel Center for the Arts—to the street—such as the Down-town Alliance’s public Re:Construction art installation adorning construction sites—to the museums that celebrate fi nance, skyscrapers, Jewish history, law en-forcement and the Native people of the Americas. It’s 400 years of history and culture.
It’s hard to pinpoint only one place in New York to be favorite cultural place but if I have to choose, it could be TriBeCa, with its cobblestone streets and unique loading dock entrances to fabulous homes and chic shops; great restaurants and charming bars; fi lm fes-tivals and famous art galleries; and, of course, a very trendy and relaxed community of people.
JEFFREY MENKESPRESIDENT AND CEO,
DOWNTOWN HOSPITAL
DREW NIEPORENTCHAIRMAN OF
THE MYRIADRESTAURANT GROUP
Strange as it may seem, my preferred location is Yankee Stadium. From the ride on the subway to working one’s way through the “unsuited” crowd, the total experience transports me to a place where I can “feel like a kid again.” It is one of the few places where I can eat whatever I want and escape from the pressures of running a hospital.
“Eat Downtown” is my mantra, but I must admit that I enjoy heading uptown to Lincoln Center and the many attractions that it offers. I recently saw “War Horse,” there, and it was a brilliant presentation. Av-ery Fisher Hall and Alice Tully Hall are great venues, and just sitting by the Lincoln Center fountains pro-vides inspiration.

Being a lifelong educator, I enthusiastically declare the Museum of Modern Art as my favorite place to take in New York City culture. Founded as an educa-tional institution, MoMA motivates the artist in all of us via its unmatched collection of contemporary art by American and international artists. Inspiration and enjoyment are always an outcome of a visit to MoMA.

For the past two years I’ve become acquainted with The National Dance Institute, a non-profi t started by Jacques d’Amboise, an internation-ally recognized principal dancer with The New York City Ballet, who began his foundation to familiarize New York children with modern dance. While my daughter attended P.S. 234 in TriBeCa, her class was given weekly instruction by the NDI teachers, and she now dances at the NDI’s Harlem headquarters every week. Going there and watching children from all walks of New York City life is, by far, my favorite way to take in New York culture.

Ever since its expansion and renovation in 2006, The Morgan Library has been one of my favorite places to take in New York culture. The contrasts of new and old, classic and modern, and outdoor and in-door make this a spectacular venue. It also recounts a chronological history of New York City via its archi-tecture. In fact, the site is so spectacular, it often over-shadows the beauty of the art it holds.

My favorite place is the Frick collection on Fifth Avenue and 70th Street, because of its compact size and uniformly high quality of the works on display. The Morgan Library in Midtown also has many unique collections of its own. Downtown, the South Street Seaport attracts visitors of all ages, and the Museum of Jewish Heritage, overlooking the Hudson River, has many interesting exhibits.

There’s so much cultural diversity in the city, but a per-sonal favorite is the Museum of Modern Art. I love to visit the MoMA to get inspiration in preparation for fashion week. For me, Downtown offers the best selection of food, from Japanese to French and Ital-ian, as well as great options for brunch. I also love the small cafes along the cobble stones of Stone Street, which reminds me a lot of Europe and makes me feel right at home.
My favorite way to take in culture in New York is through food and music. For me, those two things are the most interesting part of learning about different cultures. I can’t name a favorite place as there are so many authentic restaurants and wonderful music ven-ues. Eat, drink and listen merrily!
One of my favorite places to take in New York culture is in beautiful Prospect Park. Prospect Park is a 585-acre public park designed by landscape architects Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, who also designed Central Park. There is always something go-ing on whether it be music or theater at the band shell or the many cultural festivals. And let’s not forget the “Celebrate Brooklyn!” Performing Arts Festival.
My favorite place to take in New York culture is the Lower East Side. The LES has a rich history of past im-migrants who settled in this area and built the founda-tion to grow the city into the cultural mecca it is today. But along with the historical vibe of the area, its recent gentrifi cation has created a variety of dining, shop-ping, art and much more. This neighborhood is fi lled with dynamic, culturally diverse businesses to make it a unique fusion of old and new—totally unique!

Of course, I will continue to frequent my favorite mu-seums and art galleries throughout the rich, cultural Downtown community, but fall is a great time for me to also enjoy the outdoors. I love riding my motor-cycle among the foliage and fi shing at my favorite country spots. But most importantly, I hope to spend as much time as I can with my kids.

Before the Cathedral of St. Patrick graced Midtown with its one-of-a-kind neo-gothic splendor, there was another beauty: St. Patrick’s Old Ca-thedral, which was once the seat of the Archdiocese of New York. This proud and massive gothic structure, opened in 1815, sits nearly in the middle of NoLIta, and is both a New York City landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Now a Basilica, Old St. Patrick’s boasts breathtaking stained-glass windows, ornately carved accents and a historic organ, built in 1868, which is still used in the church’s regular services today.
In addition to the cemetery plots and head stones that neatly sur-round the church, catacombs also lay below it, marking the fi nal rest-ing place of well-known politicians, famous countesses and church offi -cials of the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
Notably, legendary director Mar-tin Scorsese called NoLIta home, growing up on Elizabeth Street and attending St. Patrick’s Old Cathe-dral School. In the 1970s, peer and fellow “movie brat” Francis Ford Coppola fi lmed the baptism scene in The Godfather in Old St. Patrick’s Cathedral.
While the fi lm lives on, these days several unique shops and eateries populate the surrounding perimeter of the church complex, which in-cludes St. Michael’s Russian Catholic Church building and St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral School, giving the neigh-borhood an intimate and local fl air all its own.

COHEN’S YOUR MANPoet. Novelist. Songwriter. Legend. Leonard Cohen is one of the most iconic fi gures in music history, and in I’m Your Man: The Life of Leonard Cohen (Harp-erCollins), acclaimed rock journalist Sylvie Simmons details Cohen’s ascension from Montreal schoolboy to living legend in 576 pages of densely researched, descriptively written prose.
ALL ABOUT ANDYRegarding Warhol: Sixty Artists, Fifty Years, at the Met-ropolitan Museum of Art until the end of the year, is the fi rst major exhibition to explore Andy Warhol’s infl uence on contemporary art. Through about 45 works by Warhol and 100 works by 60 other artists, Regarding Warhol shows what critics have observed for decades. The exhibition also explores Warhol’s infl uences, including news coverage, ce-lebrities and sexuality. Some other artists included in the exhibition are Chuck Close, Alex Katz, Robert Gober, Cindy Sherman, David Hockney, Catherine Opie, Damien Hirst and Ryan Trecartin. —RACHEL GOTTFRIED
ROCKIN’ OUTOn October 2, The Wallfl owers made their long-awaited return with Glad All Over, and even with front-man Jakob Dylan’s inherited smoky voice, their sound is all their own. On November 6, Aeros-mith will release Music from Another Di-mension, their fi rst album of all-new mate-rial in 11 years. They’ve come a long way since their Dookie days, but Green Day is far from being on holiday. Arriving on November 13, Dos! is the second album in a highly charged trilogy taking concept songwriting to new heights.

ANYTHING’S POSSIBLE FOR RICK YUNEIn the summer of ‘92, in between semesters at The Whar-ton School, Rick Yune was “discovered” while on his way to an interview at a law offi ce in New York. Before he knew it, Yune was whisked away to high-profi le fashion shoots and quickly made a name for himself as the fi rst Asian male fea-tured in Versace and Polo Sport ad campaigns. “It was a great experience,” Yune says. “A far cry from sitting around a bunch of fi nance guys at Wharton. It ul-timately helped me break through to understanding my own identity.” After working at a hedge fund for several years, Yune made his feature fi lm debut in Snow Falling on Cedars. After several other feature fi lms, Yune teamed up with Quentin Tarantino, Russell Crowe and the RZA for the up-coming martial arts fi lm The Man with the Iron Fists, out this fall. But going from business student to model to businessman to actor … how did this all happen? “I grew up understanding that anything is possible, especially in this country. That’s the Ameri-can dream. … Ultimately I don’t know where life is going to take me, I just know I’m going to be in it as much as possible.”

In 1976 Carl and Milly Gandia founded Greenwich Jewelers in Lower Manhattan. They saw their jew-elry boutique as one with exceptional service that valued and loved exquisite design. Today that tradition continues. The Gandias’ daughters, Jen-nifer and Christina, have maintained the store’s original principles—but they also bring their own experiences to the table. Jennifer, for example, has an eye for lavish and fascinating designs thanks to her background in luxury fashion and beauty brands, and Christina decided to leave the world of fi nance to join the family business.
Greenwich Jewelers, located at 64 Trinity Place, believes in the power of relationships and knows that the most important thing is the trust of its cli-ents. “Our fi rst priority is happiness,” Jennifer says. “Every client should be happy with the service we
provide, the jewel they purchase and the experi-ence they have in our store.” To accomplish this, all of Greenwich Jewelers’ employees are educat-ed to speak in great detail about any piece in the store, most of which are designed and manufac-tured in the U.S. The pieces come from more than 50 independent jewelry designers, many up-and-comers and the work of their own in-house master jewelers.
Greenwich Jewelers are a breed of its own, unique to the Downtown area. With a focus on sustainable and confl ict-free diamonds and gem-stones paired with modern and luxurious designs, this Downtown boutique has something for every taste—from contemporary to classic and every-thing in between.

Banana Republic is releasing a fi lm-inspired collection based on the costumes to be fea-tured in the upcoming fi lm Anna Karenina. After the brand’s successful “Mad Men” col-laboration, the Banana Republic designers teamed up with the fi lm’s costume designer, Jaqueline Durran, to create the collection of men’s and women’s clothing and acces-sories, inspired by the fashions of 1870s Russia. Also in the movie biz, the clothes of Brooks Brothers will hit the big screen with a collection of costumes designed exclu-sively for the men of The Great Gatsby, out this December. —KELLY KEENAN

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and, as always, we remember that a cure begins with detection. With the pink-ribbon month in mind, it’s worth reviewing guidelines for who should have a mammogram and a breast exam, and when. The American Cancer Society recommends:
Women more than 40 years old should start having annual mammograms as long as they remain healthful.
Women in their 20s and 30s should have a breast exam performed every three years by a health professional. At age 40, they should begin yearly breast exams by their physician in addition to their annual mammogram.
Self-examinations can begin for women in their 20s, once they are taught the technique by their physicians.
Women who are at high risk—those with a 20 percent or more lifetime risk due to family history, lifestyle, etc. (consult your physician on these)—should strongly consider adding a yearly breast MRI to their prevention plan.
Women at high risk or with dense breasts should seriously consider a breast sonogram.
All of these methods should be discussed with your physician. A combined approach offers the best chance of early detection.

BEAUTY STORIES TO INSPIREWith six books previously reaching The New York Times Best Sellers list, natural beauty mogul Bobbi Brown has released her newest beauty and lifestyle book, Pretty Powerful: Beauty Sto-ries to Inspire Confi dence (Chronicle Books). Brown says that this is her fi rst book that really celebrates the idea that “women are pretty without makeup and pretty powerful with makeup.” The pages balance beauty and makeup tips—shown in before-and-after photos—with engaging interviews from “real women, celebrities and athletes about what beauty means to them.”
SADDLE UP To say that all cyclists are persnickety about their saddles is an understatement. Luckily the new Bontrager Evoke RXL Car-bon is one of the lightest and most comfortable saddles ever made. It provides amazing stiffness and comfort for a saddle
weighing only 145 grams. It’s available in three widths and costs $179, a worthwhile investment
for one of such all-around quality. —JOHN CAPOBIANCO M.ED.
LUXURIOUS AROMABring a luxurious aroma into your fall beauty routine with Molton Brown’s newest fragrance, Valbonne. It takes inspiration from Grasse by incorporating notes of mandarin, bergamot, neroli and rose in a base of or-ris and modern leather accord. moltonbrown.com

!"#$%&"#'(
Mangiare&'))*If you talk to a native of the Amalfi coast in southeastern Italy and utter the name Mamma Agata, you will probably receive a knowing glance and a nod of reverence.
In Italy, Mamma Agata is legend. She began cooking when she was 13 years old and is now a master chef of Italian cuisine. Mamma has prepared meals for the likes of Frank Sinatra, Humphrey Bogart and Jackie O.
She is also the namesake of the Mamma Agata Cooking School in Rav-ello, Italy, where her daughter Chiara Lima (pictured left) is the director of the farmhouse and coordinator for the courses. There is a singular focus at the cooking school: “No religion, no poli-tics, no money discussed. Just food—and we can all relate to that.”
“Cook with love and make it sim-ple,” Lima says about the philosophy of her family. She then adds that visiting the school “is much more than cooking. It is an experience of a lifetime.”
The class comprises a full day of les-sons and eating plenty fo great food, like free-range chickens and seasonal organic vegetables. Students also learn the intricacies of maintaining a garden.
Lima’s mantra is, in many ways, a universal creed: “Believe in what you do, have patience and never give up. And always eat pasta.”
Come November, Lima will be stateside, teaching at the International Culinary Center in SoHo on the 16th, 17th, 19th and 21st.

BARCLAY’S CORNERCHEW THE FAT ON THE STREET
Ask Around:Find out where your friends and family have gone and if they had a good experience. Ask them if they were sold a healthy, well-socialized dog and what problems they might’ve encountered. Breathe Deep:If the store smells really bad or is dirty, the animals are more likely to get sick. Make sure the dogs and their cages are kept neat and clean too. Learn Something:Anyone selling you a dog should also be able to advise you about the breed, its care and any special needs. Be wary of anyone telling you that every dog in the store is “perfect” for you. Play:A good pet store should be willing to let you spend some quality time with a few dogs without the commitment to buy. If you can’t interact with the animal, you can’t develop a bond. After You Leave the Store:Do you get a free visit to the vet? If the pet is being sold as a pure breed, is the store capable of registering it? Is there a contact at the store in case you have any questions later? Do they recommend a groomer, trainer or a boarding and daycare service? These are all important and useful questions.
