NEW DELHI, Aug 17:

In a first such step for a cen-tral armed police force, CRPF hasdecided to honour its jawans andofficers killed in action with theprefix ‘Shaheed’ in their names.

The country’s leading anti-Naxal operations force, whichby virtue of its huge deploymenthas the highest casualty rateamong all forces deployed ininternal security duties, hasissued instructions for use of theprefix with immediate effect forall casualties where the trooperor officer was on duty.

Recently, Central ReservePolice Force Director GeneralDilip Trivedi wrote to his fieldformations for implementing theinstructions in this regard in ‘let-ter and spirit’.

“There was a demand from allquarters about the need to addressour slain personnel in a befittingmanner. We found there is nothingthat restricts us from taking a deci-sion in this regard and, in order togive full respect to our martyrs,

we recently issued directions toprefix their names with‘Shaheed’,” Trivedi said.

CRPF has the maximumdeployment of troops in anti-Naxal operations at close to90,000 personnel and has losthundreds of men in combatingMaoists over the years.

All official communication, messages, addresses and cita-tions will mention ‘Shaheed’before the name of any jawan orofficer who was killed in actionin any theatre where the force isdeployed — Left-WingExtremism, anti-insurgency inNorth East, operations againstmilitants in Jammu and Kashmirand for rendering any sort of lawand order duty across the coun-try, the DG said.

The country’s largest paramil-itary force, with 3-lakh personnel, also recently instituted trophies inthe names of its ‘Shaheed’ troop-ers who were awarded militarymedals of bravery or top policegallantry medals.

“This is the first time the force

has publicised the names of itsmartyred troopers with the prefix‘Shaheed’,” said a senior official.

Officials said that a numberof jawans and officers in theforce come from a rural back-ground and, often, when officerswent to these places with thebody of a dead trooper, theywere asked whether this smallrespect by way of the prefix intheir names could not be extend-ed to the slain personnel?

“We would try and explain tothe bereaved families that therewas no such instruction or orderand, at the same time, feel help-less. The new orders at leastensure some solace for the fami-ly of the personnel who has leftbehind nothing but a tale of hisor her martyrdom,” the officialadded.

The central police forces andtheir ex-servicemen organisa-tions have time and again maderepresentations in this regard tothe Government saying this hon-our (of calling them ‘Shaheed’)for the troops would not only act

as a morale booster but alsoenhance their self-respect.

These forces, at present, issue pension-related benefits to

slain personnel’s family whilethe Government decorates themwith various gallantry and policemedals.(PTI)

CISF tweaks security drill; fliers to be profiled

NEW DELHI, Aug 17:

The CISF has rejiged secu-rity of all airports across thecountry as it has replaced theritual drill of frisking of pas-sengers with "tactical check-ing" in order to reduce hasslesand ensure a heightened levelof protection to civil air opera-tions.

The central paramilitarywhich secures 59 civil airportterminals and is in the process oftaking over more in the futurehas issued directions to all itsAirport Security Group (ASG)units and the personnel thereinto increasingly start an intelli-gent profiling of air fliers ratherthan deploying the existingtime-taking procedure of check-ing their ticket details.

A high-level decision in thisregard was taken by the force inthe aftermath of the Karachi air-port attacks in Pakistan.

"We have decided to substi-tute the ritual checking of pas-sengers with a new protocol oftactical profiling. After monthsof training we have prepared ourpersonnel who are adept in pro-filing of suspicious or fraudulentpassengers thereby taking lesstime in screening of fliers,"Central Industrial SecurityForce (CISF) chief ArvindRanjan said.

The Director General saidthe force personnel have nowbeen trained in an enhanced skillof "unobtrusive" security mech-anism grid in which the securi-tymen keep an eye on everymovement at airport terminalsand other area aided by snoopgadgets like CCTV cameras andsleuths cherry-dropped in civildress and mingled in the airportcrowd.

"The new drills have beenplanned in such a manner that

nothing goes unnoticed. However, in case of trouble theCISF personnel on ground willeither make a silent interven-tion or if the situation demandsa quick armed reflex reactionthat too is available," the DGsaid.

Officials in the airport secu-rity grid said in order to imple-ment these new measures atthese sensitive locations, whichsee lakhs of footfalls everyday, the force has also increased thenumber of its officers in crucialranks.

"The top ten hypersensitiveairports and the second rung ofsensitive airports have recentlyinducted more officers in thecutting-edge ranks.Operationsand intelligence departments arefully manned and have two tothree officers each," they said.(PTI)
