GROUND CONTROLWhat, Why and How
• Ground control points are features with known coordinates that can be identified
in your raw images.
- Coordinates must be entered into the software.
• Without ground control, GPS alone enables outputs that are in approximately the
proper location & scale, but accuracy will be unspecified (x, y, and z).
• Control points are necessary to ‘anchor’ your project. With adequate control, the
natural rigidity of the geometry provides good accuracy between control points.
• Best practices:
- Multiple points, distributed around project.
- Survey all control in the field (if possible), with high contrast markers (Size > 10 pixels).
- Some points withheld from processing as checkpoints to measure accuracy.

Best Practices for Drone2Map
1. Ensure your flight plan captures good quality data
- Overlap ~70% or more, proper focus & exposure
2. Run initial processing without creating any outputs, then review processing
report before proceeding
3. Ground control should be considered mandatory
4. If project includes oblique imagery, use a clip polygon
5. Scaling up to large projects
- Duplicate images with GCPs in overlap (Future release will allow project merge)
6. Data management
- All flight metadata in geodatabase
- Outputs and possibly raw images managed using mosaic datasets
