SEVEN NCAA DIVISION II TOURNAMENT APPEARANCES SINCE 20002
ADMINISTRATION
Todd Parnell, former Springfield banker, Drury alumnus and adjunct professor, is the 16th president of Drury University. Parnell graduated from Drury University in 1969. He then
went on to earn his Master’s in Business Administration from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College in 1971. While a student at Drury, Parnell was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha and Omicron Delta Kappa and spent a semester studying abroad in London. He served as president of Truman Bank in Clayton, Mo., was founding CEO of Springfield-based THE BANK, where he led a merger with The Signature Bank. He would later serve as chief operating officer and president of The Signature Bank.
Parnell is heavily involved in the Springfield community having chaired the boards of the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce and the Community Foundation of the Ozarks. He also serves on the board of the Missouri Clean Water Commission and is a trustee of the State Historical Society of Missouri. He also takes the time to teach a course at Drury in entre-preneurship. Parnell is the author of three books, his most recent being The Buffalo, Ben and Me, which chronicles his trip down Arkansas’ Buffalo River with his son in 1995.
TODD PARNELL DRURY PRESIDENT
Matt Miller, named Drury's Director of Athletics Administration in June of 2012, has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business
Administration (2001) and also holds a Masters Degree in Business Administration (MBA, 2003) both from Drury University. While at Drury, Miller established himself as one of the all-time greats in the illustrious history of the Panthers' basketball program, currently No. 3 on the career scoring charts with 2,024 points and No. 1 all-time in three-pointers made with 351, earning Academic All-America honors three times and All-America hon-ors twice. His No. 22 jersey is one of only five retired in the 100-plus years of bas-ketball history at Drury University. He established himself as one of the all-time highest achievers in the sport of basketball. Miller served Drury through its national accreditation review in 2001, serving as one of only two students on the committee. He was the first student athlete to be named “Joe College” as a senior, an award given each year to the most outstanding male student at Drury. After graduating, Miller began a successful career in real estate. Combining his business sense with a unique ability to think critically and non-traditionally, he was active in the vision behind the revitalization and development of historic downtown Springfield. He continued to pursue various entrepreneurial endeavors both during and after his commercial real estate career, including ownership in a restaurant/lounge, an online real estate marketing business, and a seasonal retail business with national distribution and international manufacturing operations. In 2008, Miller returned to work at his alma mater, accepting the challenge of creating a campus-wide wellness program for Drury employees and students. In just over two short years in this role, Matt implemented a robust activity based exercise program, as well as a series of healthy cooking classes and educational wellness opportunities for employees. He conducted oversight on expansion of the student intramural sports programs, and launched a nationally recognized student bicycle rental program; a program that was later featured in a USA Today news article. Miller also developed an innovative partnership with a local massage therapy school, and beginning this past spring, all Drury students and employees will have access to free massage services as part of this initiative. He also formu-lated a partnership that is now accepted between Drury University and Cleveland Clinic, which will make available a degree certificate in practical wellness to Drury students featuring content and concepts developed by Cleveland Clinic.

Pat Atwell is entering his sixth year as the Director of Athletics at Drury University, over-seeing a 17-sport program that continues to
rank among the best nationally in NCAA Division II. Atwell is at the helm of a DU program that has finished in the Top 35 of the Learfield Director's Cup national all-sports standings in each of the past 12 seasons, including a No. 11 finish in 2010-11, when Drury again brought home dual national championships in men's and women's swimming and diving, a Great Lakes Valley Conference title in women's tennis and NCAA-II national tourney appearances in 9 of its 17 sports - men's cross country, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's swimming and diving, men's and women's tennis and men's and women's golf. A year earlier (2009-10), Drury made the NCAA-II post-season field in 10 of those 17 spots, finishing 14th in the Director's Cup competition among more than 300 schools in the nation. It was also a year in which DU captured its first-ever Great Lakes Valley Conference All-Sports Trophy in '09-'10, an effort sparked by GLVC championships won in men's soccer, women's basketball and men's and women's tennis, as well as the dual swimming titles for the second of what has become an unprecedented three-year sweep of water wins for the Panthers. Under Atwell's guidance, Drury also has maintained its long-standing tradition of academic excellence. In 2010-11, Drury student-athletes compiled a 3.33 grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) for the year and have maintained a 3.36 cumulative GPA for their academic careers. In 2010-11, Drury led the Great Lakes Valley Conference with 30 honor-ees in the GLVC Council of Presidents Academic Awards, ranked third in the 15-team league with 139 athletes receive the GLVC All-Academic Awards (up from 121 in 2009-10) and had eight teams - second-most in the league - qual-ify for the GLVC Team Academic Awards by maintaining a 3.30 GPA or better for the year (DU women's basketball, women's tennis, women's cross country, volleyball, women's golf and women's soccer along with baseball and men's tennis). The 2010-11 DU women's basketball team finished with the nation's third-highest team GPA (3.59) in NCAA-II, while individually, senior cross coun-try and track standout Jaime Villa Zapatero earned the prestigious Paragon Award from the GLVC for his combination of academic and athletic success, while senior Ja'Nell Jones (women's basketball) and junior Katrina Choate (women's golf) were named GLVC Scholar Athletes of the Year for their respec-tive sports.

O'REILLY FAMILY EVENT CENTER
The O’Reilly Family Event Center opened on the Drury University campus on October 1, 2010, as the new home of the Drury men’s and women’s basketball teams and the volleyball squad. The arena has a capacity of 3,100 for athletic events and was built at a price tag of $13.5 million. It was funded entirely through private donations, with the generous
lead naming rights gift of $6 million provided by the O’Reilly family of Springfield. Other large donations with naming rights came from the William Pitt family (court) and Thomas R. Stout (student section). In addition to serving as one of the best facilities in the nation for athletics and as the potential future home of both Great Lakes Valley Conference and NCAA championship events, the arena provides Drury University with a crown jewel in
the center of its campus and a home for a variety of events involving the student body population, from concerts to graduations to meeting and dining space in the plush new banquet area. Kelly Clarkson, Daughtry, Dierks Bentley, Sheryl Crow and the Pointer Sisters are among the many acts to have appeared at the "O" in its short history. A large concourse area outside provides students a gathering place before and after events.

Steve Hesser has established the Drury men's basket-ball program as an annual contender for both Great Lakes Valley Conference and NCAA-II honors in his
eight seasons at the Panthers' helm. Hesser owns a 164-71 mark in his time at Drury, a .698 winning percentage that ranks among the top in the nation and in Drury's storied basketball history. His Panthers have won 20 or more games in six of his eight seasons and captured at least a share of four GLVC West titles in seven seasons as a league member. But more importantly, Hesser has guided the Panthers into NCAA Division II Tournament field five times in the last seven seasons, including a 2010-11 campaign in which seventh-seeded Drury opened eyes immediately by knocking off second-seed Southern Indiana 65-64 in the first round of the Midwest Regional to reach the regional semifinals (and national round of 32) for the first time in Hesser's tenure at DU. Hesser's top season at DU came in 2007-08, when his Panthers compiled a 25-5 overall mark and won their only GLVC championship, a run of league success that contin-ues to this day. Hesser's GLVC regular season mark since the Panthers joined the prestigious 16-team league is now 86-42 (.672 winning percentage), which includes a 45-38 record on the GLVC road (.542). Hesser's Panthers also have continued their tradition of success at home in the new, 3,100-seat O'Reilly Family Event Center, where a 12-3 mark this past season - includ-ing an upset of previously unbeaten and nationally eighth-ranked Northern Kentucky - pushed DU's record to 26-4 in the two-year-old arena, one of the finest in the country. Hesser's squads finished with a 78-13 record in his six seasons in Weiser Gym before the move, giving Drury a 104-17 mark - an .868 winning percentage - when Hesser's on the home bench with the Panthers. Drury's winning ways have continued along much the same path as Hesser took when he fashioned a stellar coaching career at Springfield's Glendale High School before taking over the Panthers in 2004-05. The results make it clear that the former long-time high school coach has had no problems getting young athletes at the next step to understand that basketball is basketball, whatever the level. Then again, that’s what then-Drury athletic director Dr. Edsel Matthews believed all along when he tabbed Hesser as the 19th head coach in the history of Panthers’ basketball in the spring of 2004, after the latter had put together a lengthy, successful run at Glendale.
His five-year stint with the Falcons produced a 14-12 mark in his initial campaign, then a stretch where Glendale won an average of 21 games over the next four seasons. But Hessser’s run of coaching success started long before he arrived in Springfield, which explains why in 2007, the Stillwater, Okla. native was elected into the Oklahoma Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Most of his most famed work was done as head coach during a seven-year run at Bartlesville High School, where his teams won state titles in 1989, 1991 and 1992 and twice earned state Coach of the Year honors for Hesser. His Bartlesville teams also finished second in the state in 1988 and made the state quarterfinals in 1986 and 1990. He also coached the prep programs at Pauls Valley and Stillwater, leading the latter to four conference titles and two state tournament appearances in six seasons. His prep coaching record in Oklahoma was 262-142, including a 147-47 mark at Bartlesville. As a result, Hesser was enshrined into the Bartlesville Sports Hall of Fame in October of 2011. Hesser, a 1980 Oklahoma State University graduate, also picked up valuable college experience early in his career as an assistant coach for one season with Billy Tubbs at the University of Oklahoma for one season before he accepted the job at Bartlesville. After the 1992 state championship campaign, he decided to return to the college ranks to serve as an assistant coach to Jim Kerwin - his high school coach - at NCAA Division I Western Illinois University, before a fam-ily illness led him back home to take the job at his alma mater, Stillwater High School. There, his Stillwater teams won four conference titles and made two state tourna-ment appearances in six seasons before Hesser moved to Springfield to accept the Glendale position, where his Falcons annually ranked among the best teams in the Ozark Conference and southwest Missouri. As a player, Hesser was a two-sport standout at Stillwater High, excelling in both basketball and football. He started his college playing career in both sports at New Mexico Military Academy before moving on to finish his college education, and playing days, at the University of Central Oklahoma. His playing career ultimately cut short by a leg injury, Hesser finished his undergraduate degree work at Oklahoma State, then earned his master’s degree in sec-ondary education from Oklahoma in 1985. Hesser and his wife, Patti, have one son; Tyler is a Drury graduate and a former student assistant basketball coach for the Panthers, who now is an accountant in Springfield.

PANTHER YEAR-BY-YEAR COACHING RECORDS
Entering his eighth season on the Drury basketball coaching staff is assistant Ja Havens, who serves as the Panthers'
recruiting coordinator and top bench aide to head coach Steve Hesser. In his time at Drury, Havens has helped the Panthers secure the talent to earn NCAA-II Tournament bids five times in his first seven seasons and claim Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division titles four times, including 2007-08, when the Panthers won the GLVC post-season tournament to capture their first league title. Drury is 143-64 in his seven seasons with the program - including a 23-8 mark in a 2010-11 campaign that saw the Panthers reach the NCAA-II Midwest Regional semifi-nals in Louisville, Ky. Havens joined Steve Hesser's staff in June of 2005 after spending four years on the coaching staff at the University of Tulsa for coaches John Phillips and Alvin “Pooh” Williamson. While Havens was with NCAA Division I Tulsa, the Hurricane won a Western Athletic Conference regular season title, a WAC Tournament championship and made it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament on two occasions.
Prior to his stint at TU, Havens spent two seasons as an assistant at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Okla., where he helped guide the Redmen to the Lone Star Conference North Division championship both years while fashioning a two-year record of 47-12. Havens began his coaching career with one season as an assistant at St. Gregory’s (Okla.), where his recruiting class won 20 games and advanced to the NAIA national tournament one season later. The Lewisville, Texas native earned his bachelor’s degree in political science in 1998 from Northeastern State, where he was also a basketball standout for two seasons after transferring from St. Gregory’s, at the time a two-year school. Ja (pronounced “Jay”) also earned a master’s degree in college teaching/health science and kinesiology from NSU. Havens and wife Angie have four chil-dren: Sons Trey (10), Trent (5) and Ty (new-born), and daughter Tatum (8).
Former Drury basketball standout Steven Gum is returning to the Panthers’ bench as an assistant coach, after accepting
the position in July 2012. Gum, 26, helped the Panthers to their only Great Lakes Valley Conference champion-ship in 2007-08, the last of his four seasons in a DU uniform. Upon graduation from Drury with a degree in exercise and sports science in 2008, he spent two seasons at Missouri-St. Louis - another GLVC school - as an assistant for coach Chris Pilz before returning to the Ozarks for the past two years as an assistant coach at Republic High School under former Panthers’ head coach Gary Stanfield. The former Willow Springs standout scored 1,205 points in his Drury career from 2004-08, ranking 24th on the school’s all-time scoring list. His 277 made three-pointers in his career are second in the books behind only the 351 by Matt Miller from 1998-2002. “Drury is a special place to me and I’m excited about the opportunity to work with
and give back to a university and basketball program that has given me so many great memories,” Gum says. “Coach Hesser is a great basketball mind and I look forward to learning more from him.” The Panthers finished 88-31 and made three NCAA Division II tournament appear-ances in Gum’s four seasons, including a 25-6 overall mark his senior campaign that netted a GLVC title. “We're very excited to have Steven return to our program,” Hesser said. “Not only is he a winner, but he knows the ins and outs of how we want to play and he picked up valu-able recruiting experience in our league in his time at UMSL. Just as he was as a player, he’ll be a tremendous asset for us going forward.” Gum and his wife Lauren reside in Republic.

A native of Little Rock, Arkansas, this 1995 gradu-ate is the school's all-time leading scorer with 2,341 career points. A two-time NAIA All-America selection (First Team in 1994 and Second Team in 1995), Lonnie was the first player in Drury history to earn NCAA D-II All-America honors. He was a Third Team NCAA Division II pick in 1995 according to Basketball Times and COSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America). Lonnie is cur-rently third on the school's all-time rebounding list with 924 rebounds.
SEVEN NCAA DIVISION II TOURNAMENT APPEARANCES SINCE 200026
SEASON OUTLOOk
Ayoung Drury Panthers basketball team came
together late last year to win eight of its last
11 games. Now, coach Steve Hesser's squad
hopes to pick up where it left off – and make the most
of a final year together for one of the program's best
backcourts.
The Panthers, 17-11 finishers last season overall,
return virtually their entire cast from that hot stretch
run of last winter, including the All-Great Lakes Valley
Conference senior backcourt of point guard Brandon
lockhart and shooting guard Alex Hall. Both are
entering their fourth year as regulars, and neither wants
to close their illustrious careers as Panthers with a
premature ending to a senior campaign.
Last year, the Panthers missed the NCAA D-II
regional field for only the second time in the last seven
years, leaving an especially bitter aftertaste when
you consider they had reached the Midwest Regional
semifinals for the first time under Hesser just a season
before (2011).
“Our senior leadership from Alex, Brandon and
Teddy (Simniok) needs to help create that sense of
urgency for our team this year,” Hesser says. “Our
league is as tough as any in the country and forces you
to be ready to play night in and night out. We've got
to have those guys help us develop that consistency
and expectation from the beginning to the end of the
season.”
The inside game would appear to be not only
a year older, but a year better, manned by 6-6 senior
Teddy Simniok, 6-6 junior transfer mael Amenyedzi
and 6-7 junior returning starter Ian carter.
Simniok became a much-
improved rebounder in the second half
of last season. Amenyedzi has proven
in early workouts to be a high-energy,
athletic addition in the paint after
joining the Panthers from Lee College
by way of a freshman season at NCAA
Division I Western Illinois, and Carter
finished his second campaign as a
Panther with six consecutive double-
figure scoring efforts, averaging
15.8 points and 6.7 rebounds in that
stretch.
But a return trip to post-season
play for Hesser's ninth edition of
DU basketball will also hinge on the
continued, rapid development of a
strong class of sophomores, including
6-4 guard drake Patterson and 6-5
forward Cameron Adams, who picked
up plenty of valuable playing time last season.
Each averaged six points or better in around 20
minutes of playing time per game a year ago. Patterson
showed his potential by earning GLVC Player of the
Week honors after going 10 for 14 from three-point
range and averaging 18 points in wins over Quincy and
Illinois-Springfield in early February, while Adams has
shown to be an energizer when he enters the game for
the Panthers, leading the squad in FG percentage (61
percent) and doing it both as a scorer (15 points against
Southern Indiana) and rebounder (12 games of six or
more rebounds).
Sophomores derek daniels, Josh Buie and
Ben Fisher will provide depth again this season, as
will junior guard Shane rudman, whose effort off the
bench helped spark DU's upset of previously unbeaten
and nationally eighth-ranked Northern Kentucky at The
O' last season.
The backcourt, in fact, appears to be the most
solid area for this Drury club, with additional, quality
help expected to come from 6-0 freshman Kameron
Bundy and 6-3 junior lonnie Boga, a transfer from
NCAA Division I Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Boga played in
59 games at Milwaukee, starting eight contests as a
freshman, but won't be eligible for the Panthers until
after the first semester. Bundy, the former Nixa High
School star who helped the Eagles to a runner-up finish
in Class 5 last season, already has worked himself into
the starting mix with his superb athleticism and ability
to take the ball to the hole.
But there's no question the 2012-13 Panthers
will go as far as Hall and Lockhart take them. That
duo has combined to help Drury post a 63-26 overall
mark (and 38-16 in the GLVC) along with two NCAA
tournament trips in their three seasons, with plenty of
highlights along the way.
“Both Alex and Brandon have had very solid
efforts through their first three seasons,” Hesser says.
“Now they need to finish it off in the right way.”
With 1,489 points, Hall is No. 15 on the all-time
DU scoring list entering his final season, and with a
solid senior effort, will likely make a push at a Top 5
finish on that chart before he's through (Lonnie Holmes
is the all-time leader with 2,341 points). The former
Springfield Kickapoo High School standout is also third
on the career 3-pointers made list for the Panthers
with 264, and likely will surpass current DU assistant
coach Steven gum (277) before making a strong run at
current DU Executive Director of Athletics Administration
and former hoops great matt miller and his leading
total of 351 made treys before all is said and done.
Hall, a First Team All-GLVC choice, led the
Panthers with his 15.8 points per game last season, a
drop from the 18.3 points per game he averaged as a
sophomore as he clearly became a focus of opposing
defensive game plans, necessitating another DU scoring
source or two to develop. Case in point: Hall failed to
reach double-figures in six games last season, and the
Panthers were 2-4 in those contests.
One of those new offensive sources became
Lockhart, the Second Team All-GLVC pick who raised
his scoring average from 8.9 points as a sophomore
to 13.3 points last season and was the go-to guy for
clutch buckets when needed for much of last season.
The 19 points, six assists and five rebounds he
produced in DU's season-ending loss to Missouri-St.
Louis in the GLVC post-season tourney quarterfinals
was indicative of the across-the-board effort the
Panthers came to count upon from the smooth St. Louis
native, who scored in double-figures in 20 of his final
22 games last season. Lockhart also finished fifth in the
GLVC with his 4.0 assists per game and seventh with
his 1.64 steals.
With their combination of youthful potential and
veteran experience, the Panthers were picked to finish
a close second to Missouri-St. Louis in the GLVC West
Division race by the league's coaches.
Failing to get back to the NCAA-II tournament for
a second straight year and just the fourth time in the
last 10 years is, without question, not among the plans
for the proper ending to their fine DU careers for both
Hall and Lockhart.

ABOUT ThE GLVC
Established in 1978 with a commitment to the pur-
poses, fundamental policies and basic principles
of the National Collegiate Athletic Association,
the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) has grown to
embody the vision established by the founders of the
organization and has melded athletic and academic
excellence for 34 years.
The GLVC, which at one point over the past de-
cade grew to 17 members and was the largest athletic
conference in the country in any division, has fully em-
braced NCAA Division II. Although formed and developed
as one of the nation’s premier basketball conferences,
the GLVC now sponsors 18 championship sports, includ-
ing football, and is one of the nation’s top NCAA Division
II conferences.
The formation of the GLVC can be traced as
far back as 1972 when the athletic directors of three
member schools - Kentucky Wesleyan, Bellarmine
and Indiana State University at Evansville (now the
university of Southern indiana) - began preliminary
discussions about forming a basketball conference. Four
years later, the university of indianapolis and Saint
Joseph’s College expressed interest. On July 7, 1978,
those schools - along with Ashland university - united
to become the GLVC.
Since its inception, 16 different institutions have
joined the league. Those members include. lewis uni-
versity (1980), indiana university-Purdue university
at Fort wayne (1984), Northern Kentucky university
(1985), Kentucky State university (1989), Quincy
University (1994), Southern illinois university-
edwardsville (1994), university of Wisconsin-
Parkside (1994), university of missouri-St. louis
(1995), Drury University (2005), missouri University of
Science and Technology (2005), rockhurst university
(2005), university of illinois-Springfield (2008),
maryville University (2008), William Jewell College
(2009) and mcKendree university (2010). On June 8,
2012, Truman
State University
was admitted to
the conference
and will begin
competing in the
GLVC in the fall of
2013.
Ashland
and Kentucky
State left the
conference after
the 1994 season,
IPFW left the
league following the 2000-01 academic year, and SIU-
Edwardsville exited the league following the 2007-08
academic year. These departures opened the door for the
seven-team expansion over the past decade, allowing
the league to grow 17 institutions. Northern Kentucky
departed following the 2011-12 season to bring the
current membership number to 16 schools.
The conference headquarters are located in
downtown Indianapolis, one of the many major Midwest
media markets in which the league maintains a pres-
ence. The GLVC has schools in Milwaukee/Northern
Illinois (UW-Parkside), Chicago (Lewis), Indianapolis (In-
dianapolis), Louisville (Bellarmine), Evansville (Southern
Indiana), Springfield, Ill. (Illinois-Springfield), Springfield,
Mo. (Drury), Owensboro (Kentucky Wesleyan), Kansas
City (Rockhurst, William Jewell) and St. Louis (Maryville,
McKendree, Missouri-St. Louis).
The conference sponsors 18 championships in
baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer,
indoor and outdoor track and field, and tennis for men
and basketball, cross country, softball, soccer, tennis,
indoor and outdoor track and field, golf, and volleyball for
women.
GLVC institutions have won 12 national champion-
ships in basketball, including Bellarmine’s national title
in 2011. Kentucky Wesleyan leads all Division II institu-
tions with eight men’s basketball titles, while Southern
Indiana won the men’s crown in 1995. Northern
Kentucky won the school’s first-ever women’s basketball
national championship in 2000 and followed that with
a national title in 2008. In addition, Northern Kentucky
became the first GLVC member to win a national
championship in men’s soccer, while USI staked claim to
the GLVC’s first baseball national championship in 2010.
SIU Edwardsville was the first GLVC member to win a
national championship in softball in 2007.
The league also takes pride in recognizing the
many academic and athletic accomplishments achieved
by its student-athletes, coaches and administrators. In
2001, the league announced the creation of the GLVC
Hall of Fame, with the first class being inducted in 2002.
The GLVC annually presents the Richard F. Scharf Para-
gon Award to the top male and female student-athlete in
the league, and the Dr. Charles Bertram Alumni Award of
Distinction to alumni who both succeeded while a GLVC
student-athlete and excelled in accomplishments after
graduation.

POSTSEASON hONORS
The Drury basketball program has eight individuals who have earned either first, second or third team All-America honors (NAIA & NCAA D-II) since the 1950-51 season. In total, 28 Panthers have received All-America recognition. It was not until the 1950-51 season that the NAIA selected an All-America team. Lonnie Holmes and Jerry Alexander are the only two players in Panther history to earn NAIA First Team honors. Alexander was so honored twice in his career. However, Holmes' senior year was culminated by his earning NCAA D-II All-America honors.

TWO SCHOLAR-ATHLETESOnly two players in the history of the Drury program have earned both academic and athletic All-America honors. matt miller was named an NCAA D-II Academic All-American and he was honored in 2001 by being named a NCAA D-II Second Team selection. In 1980 Nate Quinn was dually honored by being named a NAIA All-American and a NAIA Academic All-American. That was the first year the NAIA started its formal recognition of student-ath-letes and their academic success. In the mid-80's the NAIA changed its Academic All-American program to what is now knows as the NAIA Scholar-Athlete program. Regard-less, following are the six players that have earned national honors for their academic performance.

SEVEN NCAA DIVISION II TOURNAMENT APPEARANCES SINCE 200036
RANkINGS/POSTSEASON
The Associated Press began conducting a poll for the college division for men’s basketball on Jan. 5, 1961. The rankings consisted of colleges and universities that were members of NCAA College Division and/or
NAIA. A panel of sportswriters and sports broadcasters voted for the top 10 teams from 1961 through the final poll of the 1967-68 season. The poll was expanded to a Top 20 from 1968-69 through 1970-71, then reverted back to a Top 10 for the two seasons that followed. In the 1973-74 and 1974-75 seasons, the poll was extended to rank the top 15 teams. The Associated Press poll was discontinued after the 1974-75 season after the NCAA split the college division into Division II and III. At that time, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) took over the compilation of the weekly poll. The chairmen of each of the eight NCAA Division II regions ranked
the top 15 teams starting with the 1975-76 season, then expanded that to 20 teams in the 1980-81 season. The NCAA continued to conduct the poll until the end of the 1996-97 season. Starting in the 1997-98 season, Division II Bulletin, headed by Gary Rubin, took over the poll and ranked the top 25 teams in NCAA Division II. That continued until the duties of conducting the poll were shifted to the National Association of Basketball Coaches Division II Congress after the 2003-04 sea-son. In each of the last four seasons, the poll has been determined by a group of eight coaches, one representing each of the NCAA Division II regions. The data for this project was compiled by Roy Pickerill, Sports Infor-mation Director (SID) at Kentucky Wesleyan College; and John Kean, SID at Missouri S&T.
