DunlopDunlop is an attractive settlement of 839 persons in2001, which has undergone recent but small scaleresidential expansion. There is a limited but steadydemand for housing in the village, with an average ofsome 3 completions per annum taking place over thelast 7 years. Because of the size and character of thevillage, Dunlop has been identified in the AyrshireJoint Structure Plan as a settlement with small scaledevelopment opportunities. Consequently, a realisticsupply of housing land has been identified in the localplan to accommodate a modest level of residentialdevelopment which reflects this provision. With theexception of an area of greenfield housing landlocated on the northern edge of the settlement, onlyone other housing site has been identified in the planas suitable for residential development, this relating toan area of brownfield land comprising the formerHowies of Dunlop premises located within thesettlement boundary, for which planning permissionhas already been obtained.

The settlement contains a number of listed buildingsand the central and western portion of the village is adesignated outstanding conservation area.

Dunlop is provided with a range of shops serving localneeds and the village also contains essentialcommunity and other facilities to meet localrequirements, including a primary school and acommunity hall. Outdoor public sporting, leisure andrecreational facilities comprise Dunlop Park with itsassociated playground and Multi Use Games Area, asmall area of amenity open space off the LugtonRoad, and a privately owned bowling club.

It is recognised that the needs of the community, in sofar as leisure, community facility and serviceinfrastructure is concerned, are likely to change in the

future and that this warrants a greater channelling ofresources into the area. The most pressing prioritiesare the expansion of secondary school facilities inStewarton, the provision of new leisure facilities at anappropriate location to serve the Glasgow LinkCorridor communities as a whole and the provision ofadditional park and ride facilities in the community. The upgrading of the B778 Fenwick / Stewarton roadwill also be of benefit to the community. It is intendedthat Developer Contributions will be specificallydirected towards funding these particular initiatives.
