Features• data acquisition for up to 12 double loops,

depending on the detector version

• compact construction

• extended operating temperature range(-20 to +70°C)

• all data directly available on TCP/IP

• easy and cost saving integration into third-party systems

• high reliability and maintenance-free operation

Applications• traffic counting and measuring (stand-alone

and as part of complex systems)

• wrong-way driver detection

• vehicle detection in emergency bays

• early detection of risk of traffic saturation

• traffic jam detection and warning systems ahead of tunnels and freeway junctions

• vehicle tailback detection and warning onexit lanes

• traffic flow control and traffic guidance systems on highways and freeways

OverviewThe VIPER traffic data acquisition system is basedon vehicle detection using induction loops embeddedin the lane. It supports single loop as well as doubleloop measurement according to TLS* and Swiss10specification. Using double loops yields additionaldata such as vehicle speed and allows vehicleclassification.

The VIPER system is very compact in size and easyto use. The traffic data provided on a LAN interfaceallow a variety of evaluation and control functions.VIPER is typically used in applications ranging fromsimple traffic counting, detection of wrong-way driversand vehicles in emergency bays, to complex appli-cations such as traffic jam prediction and detection.

Functional principleThe raw data acquired by the detectors is passedinternally by means of a serial EIA-485 bus to thecentral processing unit. The distinct data records areprocessed and aggregated and the result is passed

to the LAN interface making it available to anyTCP/IP client. The basic data processing can be sup-plemented and expanded with additional modules ifrequired (e.g. jam detection).

The communication connections as well as the loopconnections are located on the front side allowingfast and easy access.

Available modelsVIPER is designed as a 19" standard rack mountsystem and can be equipped with up to 6 detectorunits, which corresponds to a maximum of 12 doubleloops. Each detector has its own loop connectioncard LCM.Detector units are available as single or double loopversions. The double loop detector is also availablein 3 classification versions according to TLS and oneSwiss10 version.

SoftwareOperating systemThe VIPER systems are equipped with the operatingsystem LINUX. This ensures maximum availabilityas well as excellent network connectivity.

Functional principleThe data is acquired by means of the LINUXdaemon TDAD (Traffic Data Acquisition Daemon)operating as server. It continuously polls the detec-tors which are connect by serial EIA-485 bus andyield distinct information for each vehicle passing theloop. The distinct data is then aggregated by TDADand presented to its clients on the LAN interface. The following data is available:

• number of vehicles separated in distinct classes• vehicle speed for each class• loop occupation in percentage for each class• system status (including messages about faulty

loops)

The data as well as the number of transferred vehicleclasses depend on the type of detector.

On request other functions such as jam detection orcontrol of traffic signals are available.

Data transferThe aggregated data is transferred periodically to theclients by means of the UDP protocol. This allows asimple implementation of clients which is operatingsystem independent.

On request data may be transferred using otherprotocols such as TCP streams or ISO8073 overRFC-1006.

SetupThe setup of TDAD is done by logging on to thesystem using telnet or SSH and modifying theconfiguration file. Alternatively the configuration filemay be transferred using FTP/SFTP. Amongstothers the following parameters are available forconfiguration:

• IP address and host name of system• number of detectors and clients• for each detector its exact type and capabilities

(such as classification, protocol, etc.)• for each client its IP address and UDP port• the data aggregation interval in seconds

The ability of configuring multiple clients allowsTDAD to distribute its data to different applicationssimultaneously.
