NEW YORK COTTON MARKET

NEW YORK Jan cablesfrom the Liverpool market caused thelocal cotton market to advance violentlythis morning The crowd operated ratherfreely on the short side of late withconsiderable success and todays sharpupturn brought In all whose marginswere not fully up to the market Be-

sides the demand from shorts here therewas moderate support from New Orleans and also fresh buying throughwire houses It seemed difficult however for the bulls to push July abovethe 14cent level as good selling developed every time it toughed that figureEventually this wcakened Mayabout 3 points from the top and July to1396 Trading was very nervous

CURRENT NEWS AND GOSSIP

OF INTEREST TO INVESTORS

It is said that a good deal of the recent manipulation in specialties hasbeen a failure resulting in the accumu-lation of more or less stock by the poolsand a waste of good commissions

¬

¬

The firmness of the market In viewof the pending war scare is most noticeable The tendency of quotationsseems tq be toward an advance and themarket one that is held In check ratherthan one whose steadiness is the resultof spurring

Japan has sent a reply to the last Russian note which Is said to be of

tenor and the firm rather thanon all the Euro-

pean bourses as well as on the NewYork market is corroborative evidencethat the document is not of minatorycharacter at least The fair presumption Is that It paves the way for

diplomatic parleying

The low priced stocks are selling ata level which naturally appeals to manypeople who contend that the chance ofloss in buying these Issues Is smallwhile the prospects of making profitsare favorable that is if purchasers arewilling to hold the stocks for a longpull A contention of this sort applies-to a security such as Brooklyn RapidTransit which eventually will possessgreat intrinsic value

The declaration by the directors of theNashville and Chattanooga Railway ofa semiannual dividend of 2 per cent ontheir stock Is a resumption of dividendsafter a stoppage of this distribution forfive years The dividend rate thus temporarily established was much loss thanthe smaller fry of speculators had ex-pected but was wholly in line with an-ticipations formed by those conversantwith the conservative and prudent char-acter of the management of the com-pany

Wall Street continues to talk about asettlement of the PennsylvaniaGoulddifferences while the parties concernedare going ahead with their plans forthe betterment of their properties Ir

History of CaseA few weeks before his death Colonel

McKay married Mabel Grace Guyer ofWashington Soon after his death litigation was begun in settlement of hisestate At the same time creditors fora large amount against Colonel McKayfiletl their claims In the local courts Itis said that no matter what courseMrs Jenny Pope McKay decides topursue it will not affect the status ofthe claims of the creditors of ColonelMcKays estate

Tho estate has been estimated at from250000 to 5000000

1903 he entered McDonnells saloon andordered a drink of whisky The usualprice for a drink of whisky he says is10 cents Nevertheless McKay says Mc-

Donnell charged him CO cents for adrink abused insulted and assaultedhim and then ejected him from theloon

respective of the irresponsible talk heardin speculative circles

An Influence that has had a favorableeffect on the market Is the realizationthat the longexpected Rock Islandbond plan is much more conservative-in its features than had been gener-ally looked for by Wall Street

There Is growing evidence of improve-ment in the steel and iron IndustryOrders for finished steel products uteshowing an increase Statistics a tothe pig iron production in Decembershow a total of but 805380 tons a de-

crease of 180248 tons lr m Novemberand of 672544 tons from a year ago pre-senting further evidence of the successful movement toward curtailment of theoutput inaugurated by the furnace own-ers lait year

The movements of Pennsylvania arcbeing studied with special interest ow-

ing to the persistent reports that friendly relations are to be established betweenthe Cassatt party and tho Gould Interests Nothing new on the subjecthas transpired but the possibilities areindustriously revolved in the WallStreet imagination The experience ofInvariably meeting so much long stockat 120 Jins somewhat discouraged thetrading element Professional sentiment-on Pennsylvania last night was ratherbearish because of tho character of theselling that had again been encountered-at that price

The professional Wall Street elementconfesses an admiration for the RockIsland crowds mastery of the deviousways of the market and Its perfect understanding of speculative human natrue Its operations In the market havebeen characterized from the

a wonderfully professional familiar-ity with the fine points of the gameThe stock exchange crowd has beenbeaten every time it has measured witswith the Mooro contingent The expla-nation is that the Rock Island coterieis composed of men themselves schooled-in stock subtleties The roomcrowd has been whlnawed sotimes in Rock Island that the difficultyof beating its movements Is aon the floor
