STATEMENT True False
EXPLANATION: If false, change the underlined word to make the statement true. Explain your answer.
1. The Earth spinning on its axis is called revolution.
1.
2. Day and night is caused by the revolution of the Earth.
2.
3. A revolution is the movement of one object around another object.
3.
4. The imaginary line that passes through the North and the South Poles of the Earth is called Earth’s orbit.
4.
5. Earth’s path as it revolves around the sun is called an axis.
5.
6. One complete revolution of the Earth around the sun is equal to one night.
6.
7. This is a picture of the earth rotating around the sun.
7.

Does the moon rotate?
• The moon’s rotation = the moon’s revolution around the Earth
![Page 14: Earth Science Rocks! Warm up March 13](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022070420/56815f76550346895dce7c7e/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Why does the moon stay in orbit around the Earth?
Where isthe sun?
![Page 15: Earth Science Rocks! Warm up March 13](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022070420/56815f76550346895dce7c7e/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Where did the moon come from?
Before scientists had rock samples from the moon, there were 3 popular explanations for the moon’s formation:
1. The moon was a separate body captured by the Earth’s gravity
2. The moon formed at the same time from the same materials as the Earth
3. The newly formed Earth was spinning so fast that a piece of it flew off and became the moon.

When rock samples from the moon were brought back from the Apollo mission, the
mystery was solved.

The current theory is a large Mars sized object collided with Earth while the Earth was still
forming.
![Page 19: Earth Science Rocks! Warm up March 13](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022070420/56815f76550346895dce7c7e/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
The collision was so violent that part of the Earth’s mantle was blasted into orbit
around Earth to form the moon

Draw a color picture of the Earth rotating on its axis. Also include the Sun in your diagram. Be sure to label the Earth, axis, day, night, and show Earth’s tilt. Arrows should be used to show the rotation. Draw a color picture of the Earth revolving around the Sun. Be sure to label the Sun, orbit, Earth, axis, and show the Earth’s tilt. Arrows should be used to show the direction of the orbit.
