Importance of the EucharistCommunion wafer is an integral part of the Sacrament of the Eucharist and the weekly rituals of Christian masses. “Communion” means “sharing” and “Eucharist” means “thanksgiving” in languages like Greek and others used in drafting religious texts. The signifi cance of receiving the Eucharist during Mass, or the Communion wafer and wine, is to do as Jesus instructed at the Last Supper.
Last Supper and Eucharist SignificanceDuring the Last Supper, after which Jesus was betrayed by Judas, Jesus presided over his apostles, broke bread and offered it to those at the table. He also passed a cup of wine. The bread and wine symbolized the “body” and “blood” of Christ and serve as the New Covenant -- a new relationship between God and humans as facilitated by Jesus. Jesus knew his demise was imminent and this symbolic taking of bread and wine was to be done in remembrance of him and what he taught. All of the Gospels of the New Testament make reference to the Eucharist except for John.
Words of Institution:Here is what may be said, courtesy of the Roman Rite of the Catholic Church:
“Take this, all of you, and eat it: This is my body which will be given up for you. Take this, all of you, and drink from it: This is the cup of my blood, the blood of the new and everlasting covenant. It will be shed for you and for all so that sins may be forgiven. Do this in memory of me.”
At this point in Mass the presiding priest will bless the Eucharist, and worshipers will be invited to partake of the Communion wafer and the wine. Although it is widely known that both the wine and the host wafer are generally bland, most people do not know how the wafer is manufactured.
Making of the Communion WaferThe Communion wafer may carry with it complex meaning and signifi cance, but at the heart of the recipe are some simple ingredients. The host is made from water and pure wheat fl our. Sometimes salt is added to give it the fl avor of human tears, representing the suffering of Christ. Other times, the wafer may be made with Holy Water sprinkled over the dough before kneading.
It used to be that the job of making Communion wafers was reserved for a special baker in a community sanctioned by the church.
Today, the manufacture of Communion wafers is one of the many products handled by the industrialized age and factories that can mass-produce food items. There are some people who believe the host should be made locally again by a member of the church community -- and many churches actually do choose local bakers.

Easter crafts are a great family activity. While you cut, glue and color, you can talk about the importance of Easter. Projects can also be used to keep children busy after the meal when adults want to socialize.

Many non-Catholics are aware of the Sacraments of Holy Communion and Confi rmation. Whether they’ve been invited to a friend’s or relative’s Holy Communion of Confi rmation or their own faith has similar ceremonies, non-Catholics can often give a basic description of what each of these well-known sacraments symbolizes.
But what about the remaining Sacraments? Each of the Seven Sacraments bears its own signifi cance and special meaning.
Sacraments of InitiationThe administration of the Sacraments of Initiation, which include Baptism, Confi rmation and Holy Communion, vary depending on the church. For example, the Byzantine (Eastern) Catholic Church still administers all three Sacraments at infancy. This is similar to the early days of the Catholic Church, when the apostles administered all three at the same time. The Latin (Western) Catholic Church has long separated the three Sacraments. In the Latin Catholic Church, Baptism is administered at infancy, Holy Communion is received around the age of 7 or 8, and members of the church are confi rmed at adolescence, typically at the age of 13 or 14.
Each of the Sacraments of Initiation has its own signifi cance.
• Baptism: This is when infants enter or are initiated into the Catholic Church.
• Confi rmation: At Confi rmation, Catholics assume personal responsibility for their faith.
• Holy Communion: It is through Holy Communion that Catholics express their unity with the church and its teachings.
Sacraments of CommunityThe Sacraments of Community are Matrimony and Holy Orders.
• Matrimony: When Catholics marry, the couple is made a part of their Catholic community.
• Holy Orders: Most Catholics do not receive the Sacrament of Holy Orders. This is the Sacrament by which Catholics are ordained for a special role or ministry. The Holy Orders refers to the roles of bishop, priest and deacon.

Sacraments of MercyThe Sacraments of Mercy are largely symbolic of spiritual healing.
• Penance: The Sacrament of Penance is commonly referred to as Confession, when Catholics confess their sins to a priest. This is meant to release Catholics from the burden of their sins and to help them begin the healing process that helps them strengthen their faith.
• Anointing of the Sick: The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is administered to
Catholics by a priest. This sacrament is often administered to Catholics just before their death and is meant to forgive their sins and strengthen their souls to face the spiritual and physical challenges of their condition.
