It’s sometimespossible to solve theproblem by pushingtalcum powder or chalkbetween the boards, sotry this first.● If this doesn’t work, walk over thefloorboards to find outwhere the movement is.Providing the offendingboard’s in goodcondition, you canremove the loose nailsand then screw theboard back down(using the same holes),which will make itmore secure. Thingstodothisweek
Thegarden’s future is
THE soft pink peonies, deepblue delphiniums andpurple cranesbillgeraniums may have fadedfrom my borders - but there
are some sizzling oranges and redsin their place, bursting into bloomand hailing the fact that summerisn’t over.
Spikes of vibrant red Crocosmia‘Lucifer’ rub shoulders withdazzling Helenium ‘MoerheimBeauty’, whose rich orangedaisy-like flowers provide awonderful clash of colours, intermingling withchocolate-leaved heucheras andbacked by the intense, deep purpleflowers of Buddleia davidii ‘BlackKnight’.
It’s at this time of year yourealise that late summer bloomscan almost be more eye-catchingand long-lasting than those whichbloom earlier in the season and ifyou haven’t given a thought to howyour borders are going to look inAugust and beyond, maybe it’s timeto turn over a new leaf.
Thanks to the unusually warmspring, much bedding has beenblooming its heart out since Aprilor May and has just about run outof steam, so if your tired-lookingpetunias have gone soggy anddrooped in the recent rains orother blooms are past their best, bite the bullet and replace themwith some sizzling patio stalwartswhich can be replanted later in theborder.
Dahlias have made a comebackin recent years and there are somestunning varieties which willmerge into a hot scheme. Considerthe vermilion-red semi-doubleblooms of D. ‘Bishop of Llandaff ’alongside the deep yellow D.‘Bishop of York’, wonderfully offsetby dark foliage in the border. Typeslike the single ‘Mount Noddy’, withits velvety red flowers, are bestplanted en masse.
In exotic schemes I love red hotpokers (Kniphofia) which providecolour and structure with theirtall, striking stems and red andyellow rocket-shaped flowers. Agood option is ‘Ice Queen’ if youfancy the calmer hue of creamyyellow flowers but want a plantwhich grows to around 1.2m (4ft)tall. For smaller, daintier varietieswhich could be placed nearer thefront of the border, ‘Toffee Nosed’or ‘Little Maid’ are better choices.
Tubs and troughs of vivid, vibrant nasturtiums can alsoprovide late summer interest, in
shades of reds, oranges andyellows, while black-eyed Susan, orthunbergia, will twine itself uptrellis or tumble over hangingbaskets in a sunny, sheltered spotuntil October.
Other stunning additions to theborder which do well in lightlyshaded areas are hemerocallis (daylily), astilbe and astrantia.
If you’re not into brash and bold, you can opt for the softer hues ofsummer phlox in a variety ofcolours, from white to deep pink, some of which have variegatedleaves.
The globe thistle (Echinops
bannaticus) produces eye-catchingsoft blue spiny globes on top ofsilvery stems, which grow toaround 1.2m (4ft) high, while Asterx frikartii ‘Monch’ bearslavender-blue flowers on thickstems through to October.
Most of these plants don’t needstaking or dividing often. As wellas producing late colour, they alsoprovide leaf interest throughoutthe year.
For immediate impact, plantthem closely in groups. Salviasincluding S. uliginosa (blue) and S.fulgens (red) do well planted ingroups, as do Chinese aster, coleus,
zinnia, penstemon and rudbeckia.Other good bets include the
purple coneflower Echinaceapurpurea, which has pretty basalfoliage and bears big, purple-pinkdaisy-like flowers. Its petalssurround a large central cone andit grows up to 1m (3ft) or morewhen fed. Good varieties include‘Robert Bloom’ or ‘Magnus’.
To complement the coneflowersin your border, try plantingPhygelius Aequalis ‘YellowTrumpet’ in front of them. Theseplants, originally from SouthAfrica, have a constant run offlower stems which hold tubular
creamy yellow flowers and reacharound 90cm (3ft) in height. Theywill need winter protection incold areas.
Of course, no late summerborder would be complete withoutthe sedum, or ice plant, so calledbecause if you touch the succulentleaves on a warm day they will becold. A good bet is S. ‘AutumnJoy’, which provides flat heads offlowers in shades ranging fromsalmon pink to deep red fromAugust to November.
Plant wisely and your sizzlingsummer may last much longerthan you think.

● As the display in most rock gardens is pastits peak, plant fill-in bedding to add colour tothe scene. Trailing plants can look particularlyeffective.
● Lift bulbs of Dutch and Spanish irises andstore them in a warm, dry place to ripen untilSeptember.
● Mow the lawn once or twice a week andraise the cutting height slightly in prolongeddry weather.
● Order new lily bulbs.
● Feed pelargoniums grown in tubs, window boxes and hanging baskets regularlywith a liquid tomato feed.
● Keep the base of hedges weed-free,feeding with a general purpose liquid fertiliserif the hedge looks undernourished.
● Continue to cut sweet peas to promotefurther flowering.
● Plant out potted-up softwood cuttings ofshrubs taken in May in their final plantingposition.
● Thin out water plants with secateurs orshears and remove excess growth fromsubmerged oxygenating plants with a rake, ifnecessary.
● Fill in the space of harvested earlysummer crops such as broad beans andshallots with follow-on crops such as endivesor cabbages.
● Harvest the first self-blanching celery.
● Harvest and continue sowings of turnipsuntil the end of the month.

BestOfTheBunchEchinaceaTHESE stately plants, also known asconeflowers, with stiff, branchingstems topped with large daisy-likeflowers which form a flat circlearound the prominent central cone, make a really eye-catchingstatement in the border.
Their height, up to around 1.5m(5ft) makes them effective at theback of the border, but they’re alsogreat for cutting, so you can have abetter look at that impressiveflower.
Echinacea, which flower betweenJuly and September, do best in thesun in moist but well-drained fertilesoils, although some varieties willdo well in drier areas.
They attract bees and butterfliesand are at home alongside monardaand globe thistle, while somevarieties can be combined well withfuchsias and blue salvias. Whitevarieties such as White Swan, makegood planting companions againsttall, slender blue plants.

First-time help
North West leadinghousebuilder DavidWilson Homes hassecured nationalfunding to help first
time buyers in Liverpool who wantto take their first step on thehousing ladder.
David Wilson Homes North Westhas announced hundreds of localhouseholders who have previouslybeen priced out of home ownershipwill be able to take advantage of thecentral government money to buy aproperty of their own.
The funds are part of a newscheme called FirstBuy, which theChancellor announced in theBudget in March. It is designed togive first time buyers a route tohome ownership at the lowestpossible cost and with the lowestpossible deposit.
“Hundreds of first time buyersnow have the chance to move into anew home with a deposit of as littleas £4,200,” said Steve Jackson, salesdirector at David Wilson HomesNorth West. “A lot of people inLiverpool will be eligible to takeadvantage of FirstBuy – anyhousehold with a combined incomeof up to £60,000 qualifies – so Iwould urge anyone interested tocontact us as soon as possible.”
Under FirstBuy, buyers will beoffered a loan of up to 20% of the
price of the property, jointly fundedby David Wilson North West and theGovernment’s Homes andCommunities Agency (HCA). Thebuyers have to find the remaining80% of the price themselves. Up to75% of this could be a mortgage, leaving a deposit of just 5%.
In practice, this means anyonebuying a two bedroom house from
David Wilson North West priced at£104,995 under the scheme wouldpotentially be able to get on thehousing ladder with a deposit of aslittle as £4,200.
Richard Hill, deputy chiefexecutive at the HCA, said: “Thanksto FirstBuy more than 10,000 firsttime buyers will be able to realisethe dream of owning their home,
while house builders will benefitfrom an additional source of sales, giving a much-needed boost to thedevelopment industry.”
David Wilson Homes NorthWest’s developments in Liverpoolinclude St John’s Place, comprisingtwo and three bedroom homes.● Call 0844 5566155 or visitwww.dwh.co.uk for more details.
