Edition 2013/02 31 July 2013
Try not to become a man of success, but rather try to become
a man of value. Albert Einstein
I wrote about my dream for Afrimat in the previous edition of Afrimatters. I described the dream I have for Afrimat and what “the Afrimat Way” looked like.
Just as a person needs a character and a set of beliefs, or values to guide his behaviour, a company needs a set of shared values as well.
In the case of Afrimat, we agreed long ago on a set of six values which forms a basis for our actions.
INTEGRITY:Being somebody when nobody is looking. This value says we are honest and we do what we say.
TRUST:We are trustworthy, but we are also willing to trust our colleagues.
RESPECT:This forms such a critical basis for human relations. In our country we desperately need mutual respect amongst people to become the norm. In Afrimat we need to model mutual respect to the rest of the country.
TEAMWORK:A well-rounded team is one where the members offer their strengths voluntarily, accept help in areas where they need it and where the team members build each other up.
CUSTOMER SATISFACTION:It is a guiding principle in our business to serve our customers in such a way that they are delighted.
For Afrimat to prosper, we need to all live by the shared values. We need to show character in everything we do.
ACCOUNTABILITY:We are all accountable to someone for our actions at Afrimat. We are happy to accept accountability for all our actions.
Andries Van Heerden - CEO

We have now secured the bulk order from Roadmac Surfacing for the supply of aggregates for their Hex River Contract starting now. This 16 month contract, aggregate requirement, is for more than 40 000 tons with a total value of about R10 M worth of material for Afrimat.
We are in the process of tying up the supply of aggregate for the Langebaan to Veldrif road contract now awarded to Baseline Civils and due to commence shortly. This 13 month contract has a total of about 15 000 tons of aggregate required, and work on stockpiling this amount of stone in preparation has already begun. The material value to Afrimat is approximately R3.5 M.

Afrimat Contracting International, or in short referred to as ‘ACI’, commenced with business in this entity from 1 March 2012. Previously the traditional operating activities, including drilling & blasting, mobile crushing teams & fixed contract crushing, formed part of the Afrimat Aggregates Operations (AAO) business. Prima Quarries Namibia, as well as a number of joint venture operations, also falls under the ambit of ACI.
Due to the large geographical spread of ACI’s business activities, it was decided to establish a central administration office from where the day-to-day administration functions and support of our business activities will take place. This office is situated on the Glen Douglas property in Henley-on-Klip and is currently housing the following staff members:
Van Links na Regs: Erieg Raubenheimer, Marius Swanepoel, Hercu Smit.
AFRIMAT CONTRACTINGINTERNATIONAL - ACI
4.
ACI also shares the Admin office building in Worcester with the AAO staff, where four ACI staff members perform the Financial Accounting functions. They are:
From Left to Right: Blanche Scriven - Office Administrator & Creditors Clerk,Chris Moolman - Maintenance Planner, Rita Nell - Diesel & Administrative Clerk.
Back Left to Right: Jaco Lucas - Assistant Accountant, Juanita Mostert - Assistant Accountant.Front Left to Right: Anel Grunewald - Financial Manager, Santie Van Staden - Financial Accountant.
5.4.
It took some time to establish these two offices and sourcing the ideal people to fill the necessary positions. We believe that we have found the perfect recipe, appointed capable people and are now in a position to serve and exceed the expectations of our clients (including internal companies, our management team and external third parties).
Thank you to everyone who supported ACI during the last year while we worked on establishing our own administration team and offices. Your support is greatly appreciated!

About 8 months ago, we embarked on a project that will ensure effective communication within the organisation. Some of you would have already gone through the training and implementation process and you are already using these channels.
Just as a reminder and refresher to those who have gone through the implementation process, the communication channels project is one of the many initiatives that will ensure the future sustainability of the organisation. Afrimat has embarked on a journey to become a world class organisation. A world class organisation will require a culture of excellence, living by our values and continuous improvement in everything we do. With this in place, we will be able to move from being a good company to become a great company. We believe that we can achieve all this through effective communication throughout the organisation.
One of the objectives of an effective communication strategy is to create an environment that stimulates communications, allows employees to boldly express their opinion to the benefit of the company and all employees, that the company encourages innovative thinking and actions and therefore encourages any form of participatory communication.
Our communication strategy is aimed at bottom up and top down clear communication channels without hindrances. It is expected that the information communicated within Afrimat, will flow quickly to reach its desired destination. It is hoped that this will empower employees to make better decisions within their level of responsibility and thus be empowered. Only through consistent, constant communication, can we all ensure
that Afrimat employees are being kept informed and motivated and that all are working towards the company’s success - this means success to every stakeholder.
More information and articles about the internal commu-nication channels will be discussed in the next edition of Afrimatters.
EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION
WHY A COMMUNICATION CHANNEL?
9.8.
“One of the most important channels that we are implementing is the “Green Areas Meeting, Start-up Meetings or Team Meetings”. In this article we will focus on this channel of communication.
...is to provide a platform to every employee where they can communicate or connect with the company. This meeting is facilitated by the Team Leader. Topics discussed at this meeting cover the following:
• Production and Sales• Customer Service and Quality• Product Quality• Safety, Health and Environment• Employee Morale
The outcome of the meetings is to ensure that employees clearly understand their roles and duties for the day, for them to be able to measure their own performance and productivity, and to be motivated as a team.

Most Inspiring LeadershipLessons from Bible Characters1. Noah: Leaders do what’s right even if they are aloneIn Genesis 6, God is despairing over the wickedness that has overtaken humanity. Reluctantly, he decides to wipe out the human race and start from scratch. Noah, however, is the only one who has not been corrupted. You know the story. God tells him to build an ark that will save him, his family, and a whole host of animal life. As he is boarding the ark, God says to him, “For you alone I have seen to be righteous before Me in this time.” Literally the whole world was doing what was wrong. But did that deter Noah from doing what was right? Not a chance!
2. Abraham: Leaders embrace the unknownGod approaches Abraham in Genesis 12 and tells him to “Go forth from your country, and from your relatives and from your father’s house, to the land which I will show you.” In other words, Abraham is instructed to leave his comfort zone and march onward into uncertainty. As business leaders, that’s a hot topic: managing risk and uncertainty. Great leaders embrace that uncertainty, because they know the truth: the promised land awaits them on the other side.
3. Joseph: Leaders endure in spite of circumstancesThe story of Joseph beginning in Genesis 37 is powerful. The guy had a pretty tough life. He was sold into slavery by his jealous brothers. His father was told that he was killed by a wild animal. He was framed by his boss’s wife because he refused to sleep with her and was thrown into prison. He interpreted the dream of a prisoner who was released and restored to his position, but the guy forgot about him. In the end, though, Joseph became the leader of all Egypt – second only to the Pharaoh himself. When there is a famine, he is then able to save his family from starvation. He tells his brothers when he sees them again that, though they meant harm, God orchestrated the events to put Joseph in a position to save them. Leaders have a vision that sustains them through difficult times.
4. Moses: Leaders stick up for their peopleYes, it’s true. God has to be very convincing in order to get Moses to take action in Exodus 3. He at first gives excuse after excuse as to why he isn’t the right guy for the job.
12.
When he finally does answer his calling, though, Charlton Heston–err, I mean Moses, approaches Pharaoh and boldly passes on the iconic message: “Let my people go.” The Israelites, Moses’ native people, had been enslaved by Egypt and Moses was the oneenlisted to lead them to freedom. When the time came, Moses was willing to step up and lead.
5. Joshua: Leaders rule by example rather than commandIn Joshua 24, after leading his people into a new land, Joshua offers the Israelites the option to either A) serve the God who they had always served, the one who had brought them into the land or B) serve the gods of the surrounding lands. “But as for me and my house,” he says, “we will service the Lord.” The people answer in unison that they will pledge their allegiance to God. Because they believe in Joshua’s leadership, they follow Joshua’s example. He doesn’t have to threaten them; he merely inspires them by his example.
6. David: Leaders are not afraid of giantsEverybody knows this story. In 1 Samuel 17, the Israelites are being defeated by the Philistines and their 9-foot tall giant – Goliath. Goliath taunts the Israelites and challenges them to send him one man and, if that man should defeat him, the Philistines would become their servants. David, a small shepherd boy who will not even fit into the armour he is provided, volunteers. When Goliath mocks him, David says, “You come to me with a sword, a spear, and a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, whom you have taunted.” With that, he takes a stone, slings it at Goliaths forehead, and knocks the giant to the ground – dead. In other words, you can face any challenge as long as you have conviction and strength of resolve on your side.
7. Isaiah: Leaders rise to the occasionIn a vision Isaiah has in Isaiah 6, God asks who he should send as a prophet to His people. Isaiah responds, “Here am I. Send me!” Leaders don’t wait to see if anyone else is going to step up when something needs done. They take initiative. They are first to raise their hands. First to stand. First to speak up. First to make decisions. Leaders shun inaction and are always ready to take the plunge at a moment’s notice.
8. Daniel: Leaders maintain their resolve without regard for consequencesMany of us know the story of Daniel in the lion’s den. Daniel, in Daniel 6, is a highly esteemed government official whose colleagues become jealous. Seeking to get rid of him and knowing that he is a religious man, his colleagues convince the king to enact a decree saying that prayer can be made to no god except for the king. Once the decree is made, Daniel continues on praying and giving thanks to his God just like he always did. When he is caught, his colleagues tell their king and he is forced to throw Daniel into the den of lions. The next morning, the king finds Daniel alive. The lions had not harmed him. The point? Daniel’s faith
12. 13.
in his God is what made him great in first place. Knowing this, he would not recant regardless of what happened to him. Great leaders follow this example and maintain steadfast in their convictions regardless of what happens.
9. John the Baptist: Leaders aren’t afraid to call out the phoniesJohn the Baptist, in Matthew 3, is baptising people and preaching about the coming of Jesus. When a pretentious, self-righteous group of religious officials comes for baptism, he calls them out for what they are: “a brood of vipers.” Leaders aren’t afraid to call it like it is. Whether they are suppliers, employees, or even customers, leaders have what it takes to be brutally honest with the people they come in contact with.
10. Jesus: Leaders are servantsOne of the most powerful images in the life of Jesus is when he washes his disciples’ feet in John 13. When he is finished, he says to them, “You call me teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. If I then, the Lord and teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. ”Jesus, of course, isn’t talking about feet. He’s talking about servant-leadership. Great leaders focus on serving those who follow them. Great leaders wash their people’s feet.
11. Peter: Leaders recover from failurePeter, the most well-known disciple of Jesus, denies even knowing Him three times while Jesus is being crucified. Jesus had predicted he would do it, though Peter insisted he would never deny Jesus–even to the death. When the rooster crows (what Jesus said would happen), Peter realises what he had done and weeps bitterly. In Acts 2, we see Peter giving the first sermon after Jesus’s ascension into heaven–to a crowd of thousands of people when he had previously denied Jesus in front of them just a few days earlier. Leaders don’t become discouraged when they fail. They don’t wallow in self-pity and give up due to the mishap. They pick themselves back up and continue on. Leaders do better next time.
12. Paul: Leaders are passionate about what they believe inPaul, throughout his life recorded in Acts, is a very zealous individual. As a Pharisee, he violently opposes the spread of Christianity, going out of his way to see Christians killed and imprisoned. When Jesus appears to him in Acts 9 and changes his mind, he becomes equally adamant about the truth of Christianity. Paul travels across all of the known world, spreading the message about Jesus and establishing churches everywhere he went. Leaders are driven by a sense of purpose. Leaders have a fire lit under them and feel compelled to accomplish their objectives. There is no place for apathy in the life of a leader. Leaders always care…and care deeply.
Have you had the opportunity to implement any of these leadership practices? What leader-ship qualities do you see in the characters of the Bible? What about from other works of litera-ture? We’d love to hear your feedback!

During the last month, Davin, Gert, Rubin and Mogamat have been visiting sites to basically “close the gap” between Management and the guys on the plant.
To get to know staff better, Managers would sit with each employee and have one-on-one discussions. This is a great initiative and will bring us all together with better understanding of each other and the roles we play.

“We are privileged to work with you Stanford Quarry.” These are the calibre of people who make Afrimat such a great company to work for.
Compiled by Piet Swartz - Afrimat Aggregates - Western Cape.
We believe that owls are a sign of bad luck but on my recent visit to Stanford Quarry I was proven wrong by the actions of a quarry foreman (Mario Lekay) and the Loader Operator (Andries Muller). We sometimes assume that quarry workers are tough and ruthless but that is just a general perception because of the nature of their job. As I was standing in the dispatch office, Mario rushed in and desperately looked for a container.
He said that he spotted an owl and by observation he noticed that the owl’s eye was severely injured and the left wing was broken. In my mind I said to myself, “that owl is dead meat”, instead he ordered a rescue mission.
The injured owl was captured, put into a box and sent off to Walkerbay Veterinary Clinic. Dr. Nel, the Veterinarian Surgeon, took care of the owl for seven days but because of the serious extent of damage to its wing, he had to put the owl down.

Afrimat has always recognised the importance of having an effective Marketing Plan in order to identify any opportunities in polishing up our market knowledge, recognising new markets and making sure that we are at the forefront, with regards to giving superior customer service within our core activities.
With this in mind our Group Marketing Manager, Hylton Hale initiated our inaugural Marketing Workshop and invited all our Regional Managers, Sales personnel as well as any other employee who deals with customers on a daily basis. The workshop would focus on achieving the following objectives:
• Ways in optimising our average selling prices per product• Achieve total production to sales yields
Our C.E.O, Andries van Heerden, started proceedings with a brief overview on the Afrimat road up to now, as well as sharing his dream and vision on what Afrimat can achieve in the future. Andries also presented the same Annual Results presentation that he presents to the Investor or Business community once the annual financial results are made public.
It is widely known that Afrimat has a Sales team with vast experience and knowledge on the marketplace and the marketing workshop was an ideal forum for all delegates to openly share their experiences and ideas in an open and frank way.
MARKETING WORKSHOP
22.
Our first item on the agenda was to have all delegates introduce themselves and give a brief overview on their own area of operation, their particular customer types and a short description on the products they sell. This quick introduction was an instant ice-breaker and the Sales Teams and Regional Managers quickly settled into the task ahead.
The important task was for all delegates to recognise and understand our current situation and markets, to give others an inside view into each person’s daily challenges and concerns. The workshop was divided into teams according to area of operation and division; each team presented their particular markets etc.
The Voice of Customer survey was also revisited to help delegates identify opportunities in improving quality of service. The key drivers where Afrimat scored well and poorly were revisited for example:
• After-sales communication – are we communicating well with our customers once the load has left our gates?• Knowledge of our customers’ business – Do we have adequate knowledge in what our customers’ business is all about? How to build a road, how to manufacture a concrete block?• Frequency of customer visits by our sales people – Are we visiting our customers on a regular basis?
The above key drivers were identified as important in our customer’s eyes and some regions scored poorly with these drivers.
Davin Giles, Regional Manager Western Cape, gave a very interesting presentation covering the following subjects:
• The effects of discounting, the true discount on our tight margins.• High value products with a low yield, he explained the real average selling price of 9mm or 13mm Road Stone in spite of achieving a high price.• Achieving a 1:1 production/sales ratio, in his words “the magic of 1:1” sell what is made.
The workshop ended with all delegates completing the traditional SWOT analysis with some frank discussion on where we are failing our customers and ourselves. It was interesting to note that the majority of the regions cited plant capacity, communication and managing stock levels as areas of weaknesses and in need of attention but also identifying them as possible opportunities. Our identified strengths common to most regions were geographic foothold or location, expertise and experience, flexibility and product quality. All of these however would require continuous nurturing and improvement.
All of the above common areas of weakness and strengths, assisted delegates in identifying opportunities and recognising threats, which made for interesting debates. It also led to each Region putting together a marketing map on achieving the discussed goals. The workshop was well attended, each Region along with the Regional Manager left with some new insight, achievable improvement targets and new motivation.

The course introduces us to the basic overview of some of the pertinent health and safety requirements in a typical mine working environment. Although not focusing on a particular type of mining, it will nevertheless try to touch on general health and safety requirements typically found in the mining workplace. The course explained the duties of employee and employer. The course teaches us about the SHE System and how to do an HIRA.

I ended off the previous Afrimatters Communication with ...Today is the start of the greatest days of our life, so much so that I have no doubt we will exceed our budget by 100%.
Well, the weather has thrown everything at us for the month of June. We have experienced wind, rain, hail and sunshine, yet all staff remain positive with a single goal and vision in mind.
Afrimat Western Cape will exceed a PBIT of twenty million rand, for the financial year ending February 2014. Simply put, we need to make in excess of R2 000 000 rand per month for ten months. So how are we doing? Thanks to your dedication and efforts we are well on track, having achieved a PBIT of R6.3 million YTD for the month of May i.e. and average of R2.1 million per month. Three months down with seven to go...My concerns (which you continually prove me wrong on) are the months of June and July, which are historically our worst winter months in the Western Cape. The sales team are in the process of finalising a number of major projects, some of which you will read about in this edition, which will carry us through the second half of the year.We are seeing a growing culture of teamwork within the Western Cape Business Unit, where all things are possible as we work together.Listening to Miley Cyrus on the radio in the week (it randomly came on before you judge me), the words rang true for the year we are having. I have attached some of the lyrics:
“The struggles I’m facing, The chances I’m taking, Sometimes might knock me down but, No I’m not breaking, I may not know it but, These are the moments that I’m gonna remember most, yeah, Just gotta keep goin’, And I, I gotta be strong, Just keep pushing on, ‘cause There’s always gonna be another mountain, I’m always gonna wanna make it move, Always gonna be an uphill battle, Sometimes I’m gonna have to lose Ain’t about how fast I get there, Ain’t about what’s waitin’ on the other side, It’s the climb”
Take time to enjoy “the climb” and your success, while remaining humble for our good fortunes. We are improving our business daily, with long term sustainability foremost in our mind.

“There are two educations. One should teach us how to make a living and the other how to live.” John Adams
Knowledge without character provides employees with a weak foundation for facing the problems and temptations of the business world. Human values need to be the foundation of education. A good education should help employees to develop character traits and qualities such as courage, integrity, compassion, self-regulation, honesty, resilience, humility and caring about others.
Bertrand Russell put it this way, “You must believe that you can help bring about a better world. A good society is produced only by good individuals.” So if ideas like that exist my question is this “Who will help me to bring about such a change?”My answer is “Only me.”
The Afrimat Readymix Team donated 200 easter eggs to “House of Hope” in Masiphumelele. This establishment was nominated by Deidré Zimri (Logistics Co-ordinator) to receive the Easter Egg donation for 2013. House of Hope is an establishment which cares for orphans, homeless children and children who come from abused homes. This establishment is funded by the local church in Masiphumelele which is managed by the Maranatha family. Afrimat Readymix was very proud to assist this establishment during the Easter Festive Season - providing smiles on the faces of the children.

On the 31st of May 2013 employees of Afrimat KZN celebrated South Africa’s first Tekkie Tax fundraiser. This is a new, exciting fundraising project where people could wear their Tekkies in support of a good cause. In Tekkie Tax one was able to give according to where your heart lies. There were 5 different stickers – even one to put on your cell! We could choose whether our R10 donations should go for the benefit of children, animals, older people or disabled people.

With this in mind, Afrimat Contracting International (ACI) decided to appoint their own H&S Manager to assist and promote the commitment towards Health & Safety that they had to meet.
On the 7th January 2013 Steven Jansen van Vuuren started his journey with the Afrimat group, in service of ACI as their H&S Manager. He could not properly settle into this position, due to the fact that the DMR had their own challenges set out for the ACI team, through all the Section 54’s that were issued, and not far behind the DMR were the Contractors for whom ACI worked, with their issues towards Health & Safety.
Steven jumped to the challenge and quickly showed his ability and strength in tasking what was asked of him and handling the pressure that was set through the Section 54’s issued by the DMR as well as all the issues from the Contractors.
Health and Safety’s ever-growing commitment:
MY SAFETY, HEALTH & ENVIRONMENT
SHE - MY RESPONSIBILITY
41.
The commitment towards Health and Safety has grown in the minds and actions of the ACI teams, since Steven started his journey with them and we are sure that long-term success will flow from this.
He managed to accomplish all of this, while being a father to his son Aldo, 6 months old, and husband to his lovely wife, Nancia.
M. Coleman - Group SHE Manager
Just like the old saying, “SAFETY FIRST” the guys in Western Cape Aggregates went about their business. On the first day back after the December shutdown, Kliprug Quarry in Durbanville was a buzz of activity.
351 Employees were scheduled to undergo their annual medical examination and Safety induction within a space of fifteen days.
What seemed like a huge challenge went down like a piece of cake, thanks to fine planning and preparation by Ntombi, Sister Judy and the Managers. With every one declared medically fit and inducted, including those who did not make it the first round but were now declared fit and ready, it was all systems go!
Taking into account legal compliance Audits, inspections by DMR/DOL, Chamber of Mines surveys, ASPASA and our own SHE Departmental audits and monthly inspections, safety has become a major factor in our daily activities at Afrimat.
Almost every site or operation in Afrimat is having some sort of inspection every single day. Heart-warming to say that we are at least complying with the minimum legal requirements to keep our operations going every day.We must however keep on improving and adapt to the ever-changing and improving legislative requirements.
All of this obviously means that we must step up a gear or two and always be one step ahead all the time.
By knowing what is expected from us. Training, and implementing what we have learned.
SHE training has formed a major part of the first half of this year and there is still a great deal of training scheduled.
WESTERN CAPE SAFETY
SO WHERE DO WE START?

The following operators were trained, and have received their Operator’s permits.
The following employees have recently completed a ten day intensive Health and Safety training course at our Worcester office conducted by Extrac Training. All have passed with excellent marks achieved.

Another challenge this year was to reduce incidents/accidents on-site and eventually reduce the DIFR (Disabling Injury Frequency Rate) rating to 1 and less.
Through our training and development of Safe Operating Procedures, Risk Assessments and Analysis and On the Job training, we soon saw the effect in our Disabling Injury Frequency Rating.
All, except for two of the more than twenty operations, have a DIFR rating of ZERO. We have seen in previous editions some of the operations celebrating 1000 injury-free days.
45.
COMMON SENSE &ACCIDENT PREVENTION
Generally speaking, we are not born with common sense, we acquire it throughout life. Actually, common sense is really common experience - we learn about life from others’ experiences as well as our own.
Awareness of your environment, self-preservation and concern for your fellow workers are all factors in good common sense. Contrary to popular opinion, all workers can prevent themselves from getting hurt. The easy way to avoid pain is to observe how others have taken risks and been injured, rather than learning the hard way - from your own injury. That’s common sense!
The experts say at least 80% of industrial accidents are caused by unsafe acts on the part of employees - and not by unsafe conditions.
Although employers are required by law to provide a safe and healthful workplace, it is up to you to be aware of your work environment and follow safe work practices. By avoiding unsafe acts and practicing common sense, your work will go smoother, with less chance for accidents.
Statistically, most accidents are caused by unsafe acts, including:
The DIFR W/Cape (D Giles) has come down from 4.60% in May 2012 to 2.48% in May 2013.
Well done to all!
This is truly a great achievement and proof that through good leadership, dedication and motivation;
We Can Prevent Personal Injuries And Create A Safe Working Environment.
Sometimes there is more concern for completing a job quickly instead of safely. Take time to do a good job and a safe job.
BEING IN A HURRY
46.
46.
Daring behaviour or blatant disregard for safe work practices can put the whole work team at risk. Follow all company safety rules and watch out for your fellow employees. Horseplay is never appropriate on the job and can lead to disciplinary action.
Daydreaming, drifting off at work, thinking about the weekend and not paying attention to your work can get you seriously hurt or even killed. Focus on the work you are paid to do. If your mind is troubled or distracted, you’re at risk for an accident.
At many job sites work conditions are constantly changing. Sometimes new, unexpected hazards develop. Always be alert for changes in the environment. Hidden hazards include spilled liquids that could cause slips and falls; out-of-place objects that can be tripped over; unmarked floor openings one could step into; low overhead pipes that could mean a head injury; and other workers who don’t see you enter their hazardous work area.
Remember to stay alert for hazards, so you won’t become one more accident statistic: You can do a quality job without rushing. Maintain a positive attitude and keep your mind on your work. This is just common sense - something smart workers use!
Upon returning to work, after being at home on maternity leave, I was summoned into the office of the Human Resources Manager, it was one moment never to be forgotten.
This summons was a life-changing moment for me. I was requested to change jobs and take up
Being angry or in a bad mood can lead to severe accidents because anger nearly always rules over caution. Flying off the handle at work is potentially dangerous. Keep your bad moods in check, or more than one person may be hurt. Remember to stay cool and in charge of your emotions.

the position as HR Assistant and guess what? I took on the challenge. I started working in the Human Resources Department, which was quite a learning curve as everything was extremely new to me and learned quite a bit in a short while. I enjoyed what I did and after a few years, I decided to start my studies in Human Resources Management. After completing at least four of my subjects the position of HR Officer became vacant and it so happened that lady luck was on my side - I was asked to fill that position!
Being a working mother and wife, I had many challenges in my journey. Times were very tough and sometimes the thoughts of giving up came to mind but with good friends and family and the grace of the Almighty that were a consistent source of motivation and strength, all I could do was persevere.
In the end, I can proudly say all my hard work and efforts paid off as after so many mountains that I have climbed in my quest to achieving my qualification the reward of having achieved it is tremendous.

WALKING THE EXTRA MILE
MANDELA “GET WELL” CARD
Compiled by Bossie Muller
The incident occurred while visiting a customer. Clearly misjudging the hardness of the road ahead, this white warrior became ‘bottoms up’. With mud up to his ankles he, somewhat embarrassed, had to plea for some sort of assistance. After disrupting the flow of the client’s business by using his front-end loader and a 20 minute search for an appropriate tow chain, the problem was eventually resolved. Having wasted a good 40 minutes of the customer’s time, I thanked him sincerely but then had to break the news of the price increase... the client took it remarkably well!
We at Lyttelton Dolomite at Marble Hall prayed for Mandela to get well soon, this get well card was signed by all the employees of Marble Hall.

Afrimat KZN responded to a request which was aired on the 7th April 2013 on SABC 2 to assist a family who housed ten people in a small rondavel.
An 18 year old girl from Mhlahlane in Ulundi in KwaZulu-Natal was desperately looking for help for her and her poverty-stricken family. Minenhle Dlamini, who is determined to become a social worker, said she could not concentrate at school because of hunger.
The Ntshangase family has been living in Mhlahlane for the past 30 years. Minenhle Dlamini lives here with her grandfather, siblings and cousins.

A few years back their house was destroyed by strong winds. They were all forced to share a rondavel. The schoolgirl said she found it hard to do her homework in a place like that. The floor was always wet and the roof leaked when it rained. The grandfather, Nothwantula Ntshangase, said that they desperately needed a house. In conjunction with the SABC with their Touching Lives initiative, Afrimat KZN took the initiative and built a house for this family. The handing over of the house will culminate with the painting of the outside of the house by the recipients, the mayor and her delegation, representatives of the Department of Mineral Resources and Afrimat KZN with the SABC in attendance to capture the event.
Glen Douglas Dolomite is giving back to the community with a project in collaboration with AMT Community Development, the Department of Education and the Department of Health, which involves eye screening/testing and the provision of prescription spectacles to help improve vision among the primary school children at Skansdam State-Aided School in Daleside, situated within the Midvaal area. This forms part of our LED project Infrastructure Daleside.

As a company operating within the community we highly value early childhood education because of the preliminary role it plays towards shaping a child’s adult life. The project is primarily aimed at underprivileged children whose parents either can’t afford a consultation with an optometrist or do not have the necessary means to access treatment. Children identified with poor eyesight are then fitted, free of charge, with a new pair of spectacles.

The Grade R class was also included in the eye screeningand testing day atSkansdam Primary School.

Good visual perception is necessary for effective learning, school achievement and sporting ability.
Studies indicate that up to 80% of what a child learns takes place through the visual pathways.
Poor vision can disrupt these pathways leading to poor cognitive development, which in turn can prevent a child from developing to his or her full potential.
A very grateful Principal of Skansdam State-Aided School, ME Khaoli with Theresa Snyman, Training/LED/SLP and CSI Co-ordinator at Glen Douglas Dolomite (PTY) Ltd - Afrimat Industrial Minerals.
The community living close to the Vryheid Quarry requested assistance to replace their borehole equipment that was stolen some time ago. Their borehole was located adjacent to the Quarry. Afrimat gave them permission to enter our quarry premises to draw water until a solution could be found.
Afrimat took the initiative to sink a new borehole for the community and donated the necessary borehole equipment.
In addition we approached a rural school which is situated approximately 5km from the Vryheid Quarry and enquired if there was anything we could assist the school with. The Endomuka Intermediate School’s response was that they desperately needed a water supply and additional classrooms. During Phase 1 water was supplied by sinking a borehole during May 2013. The much-needed classrooms will be erected during Phase 2 of this project.

The Mnqobokazi project done in conjunction with the Big Five Municipality, Afrimat KZN, Department of Agriculture and Ifihlile is progressing remarkably.
All the areas have been planted, equipped with tanks on stands as well as piping and portable pumps and the area fenced in. The Distillation Plant has been installed and awaits the first harvest. Mr. Themba Duze is responsible for the successful implementation and ongoing monitoring of this project.
Mr. Duze has been involved from the inception as LED Manager at Big Five Municipality to his current role as Manager Sustainability KZN.

Won Life is an educational organisation which started as a basic daycare facility in 2005 and from there they transformed the building into a current school for 120 Grade R learners, known today as the Early Learning Centre. On The 18th June Joanne Giles (Financial Manager of Afrimat Readymix) and I dropped off the supplies at the school.
It was one of the most humble experiences meeting all the children and listening to the awesome work these trained volunteers are doing in our community.
The Grade R Preschool has been registered as an Independent Preschool with the Western Cape Education Department, since 2007, and provides 120 children with Grade R education, a service that this community would otherwise have no access to in the area.Due to the fact that the learners come from an impoverished community, many of them come to school hungry or without food for during the day. They provide two cooked meals to the learners each day.
We were so impressed by the amazing work that the Won Life early learning centre is doing that we are eager to get involved in helping them in the future. You are welcome to read up on their amazing work on their website: www.wonlife.org.za
A very big thank you to all the team members for participating in our drive to collect the supplies, a little sure goes a long way in the end.
