What is Disability?
As such, there could be 2.8 million People With Disabilities (PWDs) with about 900,000 children with various disabilities in Malaysia.
(Ministry of Education, 2009)
In 2011, the Welfare Department of Malaysia had 350,000 registered people with disabilities

Born with learning disabilities, he was in a Special Education school in Kuala Lumpur until the age of 20.
As one of the first students of an empowerment program in June 2007, Aizat graduated in July 2008.
Meet Aizat. He is 26 years old.

A SPECIAL PERSONAmongst Normal People
Mohd Aizat is a cheerful guy & loves new challenges in his life…
He was offered a permanent job at a hotel in April 2009…
He has a manager who really understands him and all the other workers have been told about his condition…
“So far he has no problems working with normal people.”

He works in the Laundry Dept. at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel KL since April 2009.

Selangor Cheshire’s Economic Empowerment Program (EEP) began as a 3 year pilot project in June 2007
for youths (age 18 to 26 years)
• Initiated to support Persons with Disabilities Act 685 legislated by Malaysian Parliament in 2008;
• Introduce a structured development program inline with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, ratified by the Malaysian Government in 2010;
• To complement Government and NGO efforts
• To harness potential talents
• To unlock potential local work resource

Upon employment, Job Coach services is provided for 2 weeks & up to 1 month and periodic visits thereafter, including employer consultations whenever needed.

Current average monthly salary of the 71 graduates employed is RM750.00 each
Total annual group income is RM639,000.00

• Before EEP, he could not hold a job for long as he was sensitive to how others talk about his disability
• Completed EEP in 2009 and since March 2010 he works in Shangri La Hotel KL with a monthly average salary of RM1,800
• Contributes to his family’s monthly expenses and saves RM500 a month
• His mother is proud of him as he has learned to live independently with a stable job to support himself and his family
He pays his sister RM200 a month to drive him to work.
And takes the bus home after work.
