And secondly, Third Sector organisations
themselves also face a squeeze on
budgets and need to save money and
improve efficiency. Does this sound like
mission impossible? This unique and
free conference brought together policy
and decision makers to work around:
reduced costs
improved efficiency and productivity
increased information accessibility,
collaboration and sharing
The event was hosted by Peter Sweet-
more of the CVS and guest speakers in-
cluded, Paul Hussey of Pendle Borough
Council, David Smith of Lancashire
County Council, Eamoon Greene from
Government Office and Peter Brown
from the University of Central Lanca-
shire.
Organised by East Lancashire Commu-
nity Action Project in association with
Burnley, Pendle & Rossendale Council
for Voluntary Service. The economic
downturn has put great pressure on
charities, voluntary and community
groups, social enterprises and not for
profit organisations to become more
efficient. Firstly, the Third Sector needs
to get support to the people in needfaster as the recession puts a huge bur-
den on where it's needed.

As time go by, people busy and engross them-
selves in their own their life they vaguely re-
member that flood in Pakistan. The 2010Pakistan floods began in July 2010 following
heavy monsoon rains in the Khyber, Pakhtunk-
hwa, Sindh, Punjab and Balochistan regions of
Pakistan. Present estimates indicate that over
two thousand people have died and over a mil-
lion homes have been destroyed since the
flooding began. The United Nations estimates
that more than 21 million people are injured or
homeless as a result of the flooding, exceeding
the combined total of individuals affected by
the 2004 Tsunami, the 2005 Kashmir earth-quake and the 2010 Haiti earthquake. At one
point, approximately one-fifth of Pakistan's to-
tal land area was underwater due to the flood-
ing. This is a reality for many people and we
should take a moment to remember those,
but also be grateful for the roof over our head,
our beds, the central heating, the food in our
cupboards
ELCAP has been supporting the strenuouslywork of Minhaj Welfare Foundation in East
Lancashire who have been raising awareness
and funds for the relief efforts in Pakistan. It
has been wonderful to see people of various
backgrounds unite to aid the people of Pakistan
and special thanks goes out to you all. All fundsraised have been sent to Minhaj Welfare Foun-
dation who have set up relief camps in 35 cities
across the flood affected areas with a team of
12,000 volunteers. Minhaj Welfare has coordi-
nated and continues to provide medical aid,
food, shelter and clothing to 20,000 affectees.
MWF has now launched a construction project
consisting of 1000 permanent homes project
for those who have lost their homes.
We would ask people to remember these people
throughout the year as tragedies such as this do
take years if not decades to repair.

from the famous lyrics of Queen, we are soon to
announce to you the winner of the News Flash
competition. The awards ceremony took place
on 15th July where the students recordings were
judged and the winning school received a daz-
zling trophy.
Across East Lancashire, six local primary and sec-
ondary schools have taken part in the Radio
News Flash competition.
Participating schools:
Bradley Primary School
Stoneyholme Primary School
St Phillips Primary School
Marsdens Community Primary School
Marsdens Heights High School
Primet High School.
Students have undergone an intense sequence
of training and taken the role of a reporter a step
further. Students were introduced to key people
in the community who provided the students withinteresting news story to report. Students there-
after put their skills into action and took to the
studio. The students produced some priceless
pieces of work but we can only have ONE winner,
ok, ok, well everyones a winner. Our Panel of
Judges include Nasrullah Anwar a local writer and
Sue Bowering a local TV Critic! The judges took to
the stage and Nasrullah truly did take on the
character of Mr Cowell. Martin Dobson of
Burnley Football Club presenter the trophy to the
winning school, which was deservedly Bradley Pri-
mary School, Nelson. Runners up were Stoney-
holme Primary, Burnley. Bradley Primary School

Faz thought white families dont spend time
together. John thought Asian families wont
welcome me. Find out what happened when
they swapped lives for a day in Blackburn with
Darwen
Two new DVDs showing what happened when
businessman, John Sturgess and PCR Pre-
senter and community worker Faz Patel MBE
swapped lives for a day. John and Faz, who
had never met before, agreed to swap lives for
a day to learn more about each other and
break down barriers between different commu-
nities.
The Lifeswap initiative, which took place ear-
lier this year, was sponsored by Blackburn with
Darwen Council as part of its latest initiative to
create understanding between different com-
munities. Council leader Councillor Mike Lee
said: "I hope people and groups across the
community will copy this simple idea of spend-
ing time together, listening, asking and learn-
ing so we create more understanding of the
things we have in common and respect for the
things we do differently."
Faz, 30, who lives close to Blackburn town
centre and was awarded an MBE for his ser-
vices to community work in 2006 and John, 47,who lives in rural Darwen both admitted they
were surprised at how much they have in com-
mon. "Were both juggling work, family life and
being active in our communities and were both
concerned about the things that spoil society
such as drugs, binge drinking and litter," said
Faz. "I thought white families dont spend time
together and that white men are always in the
pub, but John proved me very wrong on that. We
had a great day taking his children horse riding
and going out in the countryside and yes, we diddrop into a pub but it was for a family meal.
John, who runs his own business and chairs the
Darwen and Rural neighbourhood board, said
he wasnt sure if the tight knit Asian community
would welcome him joining them for a day. "I
couldnt have been more wrong. I was made ex-
tremely and genuinely welcome by everyone I
met. Everyone talked about wanting to break
down this invisible barrier that seems to sepa-rate our two communities and how we really do
have much more in common than you might
think," said John.
"No question was taboo and their openness was
absolutely fantastic. We talked about how fanat-
ics have hijacked Islam and created mistrust
between our communities, how the role of
women in their community is changing and went
out into local shops and the mosque. "Id say ifI can do this, with my very white background,
almost anyone can and should. Rather than as-
sume, go out and meet people and find out
what they are really like."
The two films run for seven minutes each, show-
ing Johns day and Fazs day and can be seen at

It will not be a surprise to anyone to learn of the
great misconceptions that are held by many regard-
ing some key aspects of Islam. Presently due to the
rise of individuals massacring innocent civilians,
irrespective of their religion, in the name of Jihad,
has deeply confused the image of Jihad. Terrorists
justify their actions by quoting verses of the Quran
that apparently command them to carry out this
Jihad. Then there are elements who only give air
time to the Islam that is portrayed by the extrem-
ists resulting in many in the West being constantly
told that the Quran commands Muslims to kill infi-
dels.
Muslims who understood the true concept of Jihad
were immensely depressed to see the message of
the extremists being presented as Islam. Muslims
and the wider community were crying out for the
true Message of Islam and in particular the true
concept of Jihad to be presented so that Islam can
be differentiated from the acts of the terrorists.
The Fatwa against terrorism launched by Shaykh-
ul-Islam Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri was a ground
breaker and demolished the foundations of theextremist ideology. This Fatwa alone, revolutionised
the image of Islam in the world and particularity in
the West, over night. Months after the launch of the
fatwa in London, the world media is still buzzing with
references to the Fatwa.
In line with this, a similar conference was organised
in Bradford, UK. Muslim Youth League (MYL UK)
organised a very successful conference at the Brad-
ford Hilton Hotel with the title of JIHijackAD. The
aims of the conference were to highlight the fact
that the concept of Jihad had been hijacked by ex-
tremists and terrorists; and to present the true Is-
lamic concept of Jihad to the world.
The unique and intriguing aspect of this conference
was that the audience were all youngsters. Over 700youngsters
attended the
all ticketed
event. The
success fu l
promotion of
the event by
MYL UK
through TV
adverts on
v a r i o u s
channels, and other promotional modes had cre-ated great interest in the event resulting in the
event being sold out and being full to capacity.
The key speaker on the subject at hand was Shaykh
Hassan Mohiudin Qadri who delivered a two hour
detailed lecture on the true Islamic concept of Jihad.
Right at the outset he made it clear that Islam nor
any other religion relate Jihad to violence. He said
Jihad is a multi faceted struggle for good. Those who
are using Holy verses which mention the word Jihad
to derive that these verses are permitting the use offorce by whatever
means in order to carry
out their aims are
clearly and blatantly
misusing religion. He
said those people who
were doing this were
taking literal meanings
of these verses ignoring
their context. Interpret-
ing verses without hav-
ing sound knowledge oftheir context is deliber-
ately misusing these
verses.

Over the past month ELCAP has
offered local schools opportuni-ties to experience life at a radio
station. Taking in 3 students un-
der the work placement scheme
they have varied their job roles,
from research to vox pop, pre-
senting to facilitating events. All
three students became fluent in
the Cooledit software and as-
sisted the Radio in producing
advertisement and short docu-
mentaries. Josh created some
very interesting pieces on the
World Cup, Mountain Biking andthe financial transition of South
Africa from the 1950s to present
times. While Hamza and Yasser
created a piece on the World Cup
and prepared and presented a
short radio show on local Sport.
It was sad to see them leave and
we hope that they will return
again in the future, even if it isjust for a brew!
Well done to you all! Any schools
or local organisations interested
in volunteering for the radio sta-
tion are more than welcome.

New data provides increasing
evidence to suggest that our
high salt intake has direct dam-
aging effects on small blood ves-
sels (capillaries) that may be in-dependent and additive to the
effect of salt in raising blood
pressure.
The study demonstrated that a
modest reduction in salt intake,
as currently recommended in the
United Kingdom and the United
States, not only lowers blood
pressure but also increases skin
capillary density in white, black, and Asian individuals with mildly
raised blood pressure.
Furthermore; the study found
that the greater the reduction in
salt intake, the greater the in-
crease in the number of small
blood vessels (capillary density).A reduction in capillary density
and the microcirculation is
thought to lead damaging effects
on the brain, possibly increasing
the likelihood of dementia. In
the heart, the reduction in car-
diac function may increase the
likelihood of heart failure.
The findings suggest that a re-
duction in salt intake could havemajor cardiovascular benefits
potentially independent of the
blood pressure fall that occurs.
Graham MacGregor, Professor
of Cardiovascular Medicine at
the Wolfson Institute of Preven-
tive Medicine and Chairman of
CASH comments:The new research provides fur-
ther evidence that our high salt
intake can directly damage the
circulatory system, both additive
and independent of blood pres-
sure. These results provide
even more support for the cur-
rent recommendations to re-
duce salt intake to less than 6
g/day in adults and much less in
children.

Pendle Community Radio is now offering
local businesses the opportunity to adver-
tise or sponsor programmes on the ra-
dio.
Pendle Radio is very popular amongst the
local community & is also available on the
internet, as such it offers a great opportu-
nity for businesses to advertise their
products to this growing consumerdemographic.
The expense of advertising on other
types of media can be a restrictive factor
especially for smaller businesses and this
is precisely where Pendle Radio can
help. Ad spots can be bought by the
second and as such offer great value for
money.
The science of advertisement suggests
repetition and simplicity are the key to a
good radio advert, the cost of ads on
Pendle Radio means even smaller busi-
nesses can now purchase repetitive ads.
Pendle Radio can also author and pro-
duce your advertisements for you.
If you would like to advertise on Pendle
Radio please contact us via email;
ELCAP would like to thank all

What is a blog? A blog is a personal diary. A
daily pulpit. A collaborative space. A political
soapbox. A breaking-news outlet. A collection
of links. Your own private thoughts. Memos to
the world. Your blog is whatever you want it
to be. There are millions of them, in all
shapes and sizes, and there are no real rules.
In simple terms, a blog is a website, whereyou write stuff on an ongoing basis. New stuff
shows up at the top, so your visitors can read
what's new. Then they comment on it or link
to it or email you. Or not.
Since Blogger was launched in 1999, blogs
have reshaped the web, impacted politics,
shaken up journalism, and enabled millions
of people to have a voice and connect with
others. And we are pretty sure the whole dealis just getting started.
