Electrolysis
In a galvanic cell, a redox reaction occurs to produce electricity.
In an electrolytic cell, electricity is used to produce a redox reaction that would otherwise be non-spontaneous.
Galvanic Cell
Electrolytic Cell
Electrons are forced to flow in the opposite direction to what they would spontaneously flow.
Because the electron flow is opposite, the anode and cathode are reversed as well as the flow of ions through the salt bridge.

Uses of Electrolysis
Electrolysis is used to:commercially produce aluminum metalpurify other metals, such as Cu, Fe, Znmetal plating of tin on “tin” cans, and
chrome on steel car bumpers
