Outline
Introduction Presentation of the interventions Calendar of the LS1 at ISOLDE Conclusion
Introduction
The long shutdown 1 (LS1) at ISOLDE will enable us to carry out various interventions in the facility Routine interventions Repairs Maintenance Upgrade of the facility
In the target area, labs, class A lab, experimental hall, …
ISOLDE EN, PH, BE, TE LS1 prepared in collaboration with several departments
Presentation of the interventions
Target area (building 838): Handling and transfer of the targets from the target area
to ISR 3 Replacement of the robots Relocation of the services (ventilation, ducts, cooling system, electrical
cables) Repairs of the extraction electrode mecanism Maintenance of the Front-Ends Connection of the High Voltage and radiofrequency
supply BTY pick ups Replacement of the shielded shelves Installation of the RCS (Rail Conveyor System) Proton beam alignment with the SEMGRID target
Presentation of the interventions
Building 179: Post mortem analysis of the target NaF #478 Smear tests on the target BeO #396 Maintenance of the pumpstands PAD/MAD installation Hot cell and RABIT dismantling Civil engineering of the new MEDICIS lab
Experimental hall (building 170): Exchange of the laser windows Work on the lasers RFQ cooler realignment Consolidation of ISOLDE slits HIE ISOLDE works
Laboratories and other activities
Handling and transfer of the targets
Transfer from the target area to the ISR 3 Lowered type A container and remote controlled
pedestrian stacker Done on weekend to limit risks
Positioning of the box containing the targets in the ISR 3
First intervention to reduce the dose rate in the target area
Replacement of the robots
Installation of the shieldings and the cover plates Decrease the dose rate before interventions
> January
• Dismantling of the old robots, rails, cables, robot control room …• Installation of the new rails, robots, … on the ceiling• Installation of a cabling interface box
In collaboration with EN-HE and EN-STI-TCD
Relocation of the services
Assumed by EN-CV et EN-EL
Ventilation ducts, cooling system and cables are in the way of the new rails (GPS side)
Need to modify their layout in order for the new rails to have enough space to be installed
Repairs of the extraction electrode mecanism
Due to a problem on the electrode in 2012 (GPS Front-End)
Possibility to do the same repairs on HRS Front-End as a preventive maintenance
Maintenance of the Front-Ends
Annual preventive maintenance Electrode removal Lubrication Cleaning Visual inspection
Connection of the High Voltage and
radiofrequency supply GPS Front-End
Installation of 2 new cables 1 for high voltage Connect it on an existing
connector 1 for radiofrequency Install a new connector
before connection
In order for the “RF source” targets to be compatible with both GPS and HRS Front-Ends
Intervention made depending on the collective and individual dose
BTY pick ups
Dismantling of the 2 pick-ups Dismantling of one pick-up’s transition
chamber Modification of the electronics, reassembly Vacuum test Reassembly on the BTY line then put under
vacuum
In Building179
Assumed by BE/BI
Replacement of the shielding shelves
Design, build and test a new shelf system dedicated to target storage inside the target area
Micro-switches indicating (in the robot control room) the occupation of each individual shelf space
Modification of the door controls (electrical control, electrovannes put outside to facilitate interventions in case of failure)
In collaboration with BE/OP
Installation of the RCS (Rail Conveyor System)
Preparation of the Faraday Cage HRS Installation of the rails to the dump
RCS can be used for new cameras
Proton beam alignement with the SEMGRID target
Check of the proton beam position on the target once the PS Booster is restarted (16th June 2014)
Corrections of the position if needed
Layout
Building 179: Post mortem analysis of the target NaF #478 Smear tests on the target BeO #396 Maintenance of the pumpstands PAD/MAD installation Hot cell and RABIT dismantling Civil engineering of the new MEDICIS lab
Experimental hall (building 170): Exchange of the laser windows Work on the lasers RFQ cooler realignment Consolidation of ISOLDE slits HIE ISOLDE works
Laboratories and other activities
Post mortem analysis and smear on targets
Post mortem analysis on a target following a short cut Improvement of the next set of targets of the same type Post mortem analysis under a fume cupboard in the
class A lab
Smear on a target Is there any accumulation or a diffusion of isotopes on the surface ? Know the composition Smear under a fume cupboard in the class A lab
Maintenance of the pumpstands
• Performance of the oil pumps decreases throughout the year Changing the oil of the 2 pumps Contaminated oil but no dose rate
Put a special protection cover in order to protect the connections
PAD/MAD installation
In charge: GS-ASE-SSE

Hot cell and RABIT dismantling
Current RABIT will be replaced by a new one, dedicated to CERN-MEDICIS
Current hot cell will be replaced by a new one enabling the dismantling of actinide targets
Civil engineering of the new MEDICIS lab
Buffer area
RCS
Mass separator
New target storage
New hot cell
Recuperation of dumped protons for the production of medical isotopes
Layout
Building 179: Post mortem analysis of the target NaF #478 Smear on the target BeO #396 Maintenance of the pumpstands PAD/MAD installation Hot cell and RABIT dismantling Civil engineering of the new MEDICIS lab
Experimental hall (building 170): Exchange of the laser windows Work on the lasers RFQ cooler realignment Consolidation of ISOLDE slits HIE ISOLDE works
Laboratories and other activities
Exchange of the laser windows
Laser ionisation is used for a lot of experiments at Isolde laser passes through a window made of quartz in the separator magnets. Windows become opaque both because of the laser beam and the lost secondary beam
To ensure an efficient laser ionisation windows are replaced each year
In the separator areas (GPS and HRS) Protection of orings from laser light needs to
be integrated
Work on the lasers
Extension of RILIS cabin Modification of the HRS laser window holder
Make an extension tube for mounting the window outside magnet To replace the removal tool
Easy to inspect, easy to replace
RILIS machine protection system GPS laser beam launch New laser for non-resonant ionization New and improved RILIS schemes for the Dual
RILIS system
In charge: BE-OP and EN/STI/LPC
RFQ cooler realignement
RFQ cooler’s internal components are not aligned
Affects the beam transport
Correction of the alignement of the RFQ cooler’s internal components
Checking of the internal electrodes
Calibration of helium buffer gas valve
Consolidation of ISOLDE slits
Electronics of the controller, motors and resolver doesn’t work
Fabrication Removal of the pieces of equipment Replacement
In collaboration with: EN/STI/ECE
HIE ISOLDE works
Upgrade of the demineralized water system Cabling Safety system installation

Conclusion
LS1 will enable us to upgrade a large part of the facility
Several sections of the EN/STI group and several other departments will work in collaboration in order to manage all the interventions
Collective and individual doses will be reduced as much as possible and estimated thanks to the establishment of WDP 15 WDP under preparation
Safety during operations will be optimized and people will be informed
