countries easily. It provides a big opportunity to the companies to deal with the worldwide market.

Globalization helps to consider the whole world as a single market. Traders are extending their areas of business by treating the world as a global village. Earlier till the 1990s, there was a restriction on importing certain products which were already manufactured in India like agricultural products, engineering goods, food items and toiletries. However, during the 1990s there was a pressure from the rich countries on the poor and developing countries to allow them to spread their businesses by opening their markets. In India the globalization and liberalization process was started in 1991.

After many years, globalization brought about a major revolution in the Indian market when multinational brands came to India and started delivering a wide range of quality products at cheap prices. Prices of good quality products came down because of the cutthroat competition in the market.

Globalization and liberalization of the businesses in India have flooded the market with quality foreign products but has affected the local Indian industries adversely to a great extent resulting in the job loss to poor and uneducated workers. Globalization

has been a bonanza for the consumers, however, a loss to the small-scale Indian producers. Globalization has had some very positive effects on the Indian consumer in all sectors of society. It has affected the Indian students and education sector to a great extent by making study books and a lot of information available over the internet. Collaboration of foreign universities with the Indian

4

universities has brought about a huge change in the field of education.

Globalization of trade in the agricultural sector has brought varieties of quality seeds which have disease resistance property. However, it is not good for the poor Indian farmers because the seeds and agricultural technologies are costly. It has brought about a huge revolution in the employment sector by the spread of businesses like cottage, handloom, carpet, artisan carving, ceramic, jewellery, and glassware etc.

2. Read the passage given below:

Everybody wants to succeed in life. For some, success means achieving whatever they desire or dream. For many it is the name, fame and social position. Whatever be the meaning of success, it is success which makes a man popular.

All great men have been successful. They are remembered for their great achievements. But it is certain that success comes to those who are sincere, hardworking, loyal and committed to their goals.

Success has been man’s greatest motivation. It is very important for all. Success has a great effect on life. It brings pleasure and pride. It gives a sense of fulfilment. It means all-around development. Everybody hopes to be successful in life. But success smiles on those who have a proper approach, planning, vision and stamina. A proper and timely application of all these things is bound to bear fruit. One cannot be successful without cultivating these certain basic things in life. It is very difficult to set out on a journey without knowing one’s goals and purposes. Clarity of the objective is a must to succeed in life. A focused approach with proper planning is certain to bring success. Indecision and insincerity are big obstacles on the path to success.

One should have the capability, capacity and resources to turn one’s dreams into reality. Mere desire cannot bring you success. The desire should be weighed against factors like capability and resources. This is the basic requirement of success. The next important thing is the eagerness,

12

6

seriousness and the urge to be successful. It is the driving force which decides the success. It is the first step on the ladder of success.

One needs to pursue one’s goals with all one’s sincerity and passion. One should always be in high spirit. Lack of such spirit leads to an inferiority complex which is a big obstruction on the path to success. Time is also a deciding factor. Only the punctual and committed have succeeded in life. Lives of great men are examples of this. They had all these qualities in plenty which helped them rise to the peak of success.

Hard labour is one of the basic requirements of success. There is no substitute for hard labour. It alone can take one to the peak of success. Every success has a ratio of five percent inspiration and ninety-five percent perspiration. It is the patience, persistence and perseverance which play a decisive role in achieving success. Failures are the pillars of success as they are our stepping-stones and we must get up and start again and be motivated.

Sir/Madam,

Subject: Parks in our locality is suffering from neglect on the part of local authorities.

It has come to our notice that people are not allowed to enjoy the two main parks of the locality in the evenings. They have virtually been taken over by undesirable elements. As a result, the residents have stopped going to the parks. It is usually occupied by a group of men creating unnecessary nuisance which disturbs the sanctity of these residents.

Ignorance and negligence of the problems of people has been a major issue in our rapidly advancing society. People usually consider themselves to be the owners of that place because our attitude towards them is little or no attention to what they are doing. What we find more convenient is not to intervene and ask them to leave but to stop going to the parks ourselves. Being a member of a housing society gives everyone equal rights to use its amenities. Often elderly members and children visit the parks in the evening for a walk or to play but it has been observed that these people usually occupy maximum area of the park. This matter was projected to the councilor of

Section B

our area and we came to a conclusion of getting more benches constructed so that everyone can enjoy equally. When we asked for his contribution they said they did not feel the need for it and ignored the matter.

I would request you to project this problem through your esteemed daily.

Yours sincerely,

4. Match of the year

It was a great opportunity for me as I got a chance to watch a cricket match between the two legends of Indian cricket Dhoni and Kohli. It was the time for the opening IPL match between Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore. I had already taken my seat. Both the teams were on the ground. It was a beautiful play ground. There was greenery, around it and you could hear the entire crowd cheer for their heroes. The weather was very charming and a gentle, cold breeze was blowing. I was excited to watch the match.

The audience was also excited. They were blowing whistles and shouting slogans. All of us had been waiting for the match to start. The referees were also on the ground. The whistle blew which was a signal to both the teams to line up as the Chief Minister was in the stadium for inauguration. After formal introduction, the match was about to begin. The players of both the teams were in full zeal to show their game. It was time to toss. The toss was won by Kohli who opted for batting. All of a sudden there was an announcement to be be

19

aware of the unknown things found around and keep them away. There was a secret report of some terrorist being in the ground among crowd. The two captains looked tense. Nobody knew, what to do. The cricketers were asked to vacate the ground until the situation was under control. Suddenly, there was a commotion in one of the corners of the stadium. The police was there and they were holding two persons by their collar, their hands in cuffs and took them away at their gun point. The two terrorists had been taken under arrest.

Now, there was another announcement that everything was alright. The warning had been taken back. The captains were back on the ground. The audience was pleased. There was a great thrill in the match. Royal Challengers Bangalore won the match by 3 runs. Everyone was delighted.

A life changing experience

It was a sunny Monday morning in the winter season. All the people were out for the daily routine and to purchase the domestic requirements. I went to get some clothing from the market but there was a long wait for the bus. The wind was icy cold so the people were enjoying the sun overhead.

People were eagerly waiting for the arrival of the bus. I saw a bus approaching towards the bus stand and this was the bus which, I had to catch. The bus came and stopped at the proper place. A crowd gathered there to get inside the bus. Suddenly, I felt a hand touching my pocket. I was alert. I caught the hand and turned back. I saw a tall boy putting his hand in my pocket. I caught him, red handed picking my pocket. The boy behind me wanted to pick my pocket for the reason that he was hungry from last two days. Now, I felt sorry for it and got off the bus. I asked him what would he like to eat and he just said

OR

20

that anything that could satisfy his hunger. I took him to a food outlet nearby and bought him a meal. After this incident the boy's eyes looked satisfied. And I began conversing with him. During this conversation he said that he had been sold by his parents to a contractor who engaged children in begging, robbing and selling news paper on streets. I was shocked on hearing the words of this boy and my eyes were filled with tears and I decided to do something for such children. At that moment I didn’t have the enough means or money to help them all but at least he was the one person I could start with. I took him to a stationery shop nearby which was owned by my father’s friend and asked him to let that boy work there in return of some food and shelter. He readily agreed with me. This was an extraordinary experience of my life.

Today it has been 3 years since that incident and I have helped more than 60 such children. I along with my father and uncles support search for shops where there is a requirement of people to work. Then I locate any such children who would be willing to earn. The work is not very tiring. They are just involved in the counting and packing of products according to the orders that the shop receives and in return they are given some nominal money day to day which satisfies there basic need for food and shelter.

7. a) Travelling to a new country can be very exciting.

The sentence starts with ‘travelling’ which is the subject of the sentence followed by ‘to’. The next fragment would be ‘a new country’ as it gives a hint of what we are talking about, followed by ‘can be’ and then ‘very exciting’ used to indicate a travelling experience. It talks about the excitement of travelling to a new country. Thus it forms a logical and coherent sentence.

b) It actually requires a lot of preparation before the visit.

The starting fragment would be ‘the visit’ as it forms the subject of the sentence. It is followed by ‘actually requires’ as it adds to the subject. Then it further talks about the preparation required before such a visit thereby forming a logical and coherent sentence.

c) Travelling light is the best option.

The sentence starts with ‘travelling’ which is the subject of the sentence. The next fragment would be ‘light’ followed by ‘is’ and ‘the’ as it gives a hint of what we are talking about, followed by ‘best option’. It tells us that travelling light is the best option. Thus it forms a logical and coherent sentence.

d) We also need to keep in mind the local weather.

22

The starting fragment would be ‘we’ followed by ‘also need’ then ‘to’ and ‘keep’. It is followed by ‘in mind’ as it adds to the subject i.e. the local weather. Thus this talks about the local weather which should be kept in mind before planning such a visit thereby forming a logical and coherent sentence.

9. a) Michael's father was fascinated by computers as he used to buy every new gadget. In fact, he could not resist any of the new gadgets or gizmos that came into the market. His father was obsessed with computers so he went to the computer fair also. He had a Pentium 150 Mhz processor with 256 RAM, 1.2 GB hard disk drive, 16 CD ROM which could do anything i.e. play music, paint etc. Michael’s father was fascinated about computers because they were having one of the most advance computer at their home which had big memory space and top speed. Later we come to know that they spent a whole day in the computer fair. Also his father allowed him to buy the psycho-driven games. By this we come to know that his father’s fascination about computers.

b) The author says that Louisa Mebbin had a protective elder sister attitude towards money because she would go to any lengths to earn extra money and protect the money earned in such a way that she could not lose it. She was a miserly, money-minded woman. Mrs. Packletide acquires a paid companion, Louisa Mebbin, a witness to her extraordinary feat. She managed to shoot an animal but it was the goat. The tiger died of heart-failure. However she got her pictures published in the newspaper. She buys a weekend cottage for Louisa Mebbin to prevent her from telling anybody that it was not the tiger but a goat she had shot. This proves the phrase that “pride goes before a fall”.

c) The Judgement Day is the imagined day at the end of the world when God will judge everyone who has lived. According to each human soul’s deeds, God will grant immortality or condemnation. The poet’s friend will achieve immortality through God on the Judgement Day. He will feel extremely elated and joyous. He will also feel grateful to Shakespeare, his friend for having preserved memory of his noble deeds in the rhyme from one generation to another, thus keeping his friend

25

alive until the Judgement Day. On the day of Judgement, the poets 'friend will realise that he has become immortal through the verses of his friend. The forces of time, nature, war and man can destroy everything but not the written verse.

d) In the poem “Snake”, the poet says “I have something to expatiate.” Education and social conventions make the poet think that the golden brown poisonous snake must be killed and that as a brave man he must undertake the task of killing the snake. The poet questions himself and wonders whether his not daring to kill the snake proved that he was a coward and whether his desire to talk to the snake reflected his perversity. The voices of education inside the poet tell him that it was the fear for the snake that made him refrain from killing him. However, the poet feels that though he was quite afraid of the snake, he did actually feel honoured that a snake had come to seek his hospitality from the deep recesses of the earth. After drinking water to his satisfaction as the snake moved away and put his head into the hole to retreat into the earth, the poet was filled with a protest against the idea of the snake withdrawing into his hole. The poet put down his pitcher, picked up alog and hurled it at the snake. The snake twisted violently and with great alacrity vanished into the hole in the wall. The poet instantly felt sorry for his unrefined and contemptible act and cursed the voices of education and civilization that had shaped his thought processes and urged him to kill the snake. He wishes that the snake would come back. He thinks of the sanke as a king in exile who has to be crowned again. He is guilt-ridden and feels that he has to atone for the meanness of his action of throwing a log at the snake.

e) The “Writer’s inspiration Bureau” was formed by Helen and other co-ghosts in their afterlife to help out writers who lack new ideas for writing stories. Helen used to help the narrator to write ghost stories as he would often call on heaven and

26

earth to help him for ideas. Helen was a ghost and it was her style of appearance. John would call on heaven to write a story all night long and Helen was completely tired doing so. Also, people used Ouija board to ask the ghosts silly questions and this way they could not get any sleep. Helen usually appeared in this manner also because she was tired and worn out.

10. “Patol Babu, Film Star,” by Satyajit Ray emphasizes the valuable contribution of a mentor in changing a negative mind-set into a positive one. Gogon Pakrashi was Patol Babu’s mentor. He said to Patol Babu to remember one thing that however small a part he is offered, he shouldn’t ever consider it beneath his dignity to accept it. These words influenced Patol Babu a lot and they helped him enact his role with confidence and determination. From these words, Patol Babu drew spirit, energy, inspiration and dignity to enact such a small role. He no more felt his role in the movie to be condescending. Patol Babu executed his part to perfection. He was given a small role but still wondered whether it would be appreciated by everyone or not. The film unit usually got hold of some people, made them do their parts and paid them a small amount without being bothered about the quality of performance. Although Patol Babu performed a small role, he felt that taking money for it would trivialise his performance. He was a true actor for whom creative satisfaction was foremost and not money.

Time humbles even the greatest of the great. One should cultivate the quality of humility. Glorious deeds should be committed to get respect from posterity. Real power lies in winning the hearts and not in, ruling the weak and needy. This describes how time has reduced the mighty Ozymandias to nothing. Ozymandias was so steeped in his own self

OR

27

importance that he even challenged others to cringe at the greatness of his works and be overcome with despair. He can be described as a signature of a remarkably inflated ego. However, it has all come to naught, for all that remains of his superciliousness is a broken statue in an empty, vast desert. He was arrogant and highly conceited, and believed that no one will ever be able to equal his achievements. He believed himself to be above law and destiny. The poem ‘Ozymandias’ conveys a message which explains the ultimate truth of human lives that nothing is important. Everything in this world is time-bound and not immortal. The immutability of time has been explained through this poem. The fact is that even an empire is a human creation that will one day pass away. The only things that live on are those passions, pride and cruelty of the King. The statue of Ozymandias symbolises political tyranny. The broken statue suggests that tyranny is temporary and that no one can hope to have lasting power or influence.

11. (a) Mr. Otto Frank was a smart, resourceful and caring father as well as a talented businessman. He had a strong character and was clearly the head of the Frank household. He likes reading books, news and he encourages these interests in Anne. He was the only resident of the annex to survive the war. Otto remained in Aushwitz until it was liberated by Russian troops in 1945. He returned to Holland where he receives Anne’s diary. He got Anne’s diary published and spent his life promoting Anne’s diary. He often serves as the peacekeeper between the Franks, Van Daans, and Dussel. According to Anne, Mr. Otto Frank is one of the kindest, smartest, most gentle and thoughtful fathers imaginable. He always supports Anne and frequently takes her stand during family arguments. He always remains level-headed, while the other adults in the annex can be stingy, harsh and emotional. Unlike Mr. Dussel,

28

he always tries to keep the best food for the children and takes the smallest portion for himself. Anne mentions the feeling of a special closeness to her father since she sees herself as more similar to him than to her mother or sister. Anne always tries to impress her father, live up to his expectations, and obey his wishes. However when she is in a close relationship with Peter her father deems it inappropriate and asks her to stop visiting Peter in the upper part of the annex. Anne feels upset that her father is so conservative, protective and does not approve of her relationship. Out of respect for her father and in an attempt to please him, Anne begins to spend less with Peter.

Anne Frank was only 13 and her sister Margot was 16 when they went into hiding during the Holocaust. During their two years in hiding, both Anne and Margot learned a lot about each other, their differences, similarities and how to be close during a time of so much fear. In The Diary of a Young Girl, Anne Frank and her family go into hiding to evade the Nazis during the Holocaust. They hide in the secret annex, which was a room built onto the back of Anne's father's office. They were there for two years, living with another family, the van Daans, in very cramped quarters and with a dwindling food supply. She made Helen actually feel the nature and its creations. Helen Keller said that examinations could lead to cause anxiety an obsessive fear of what one has learned previously and forget what was learned during the time of the study when the exam paper is in front of them.

Even with her love and will to learn new things Helen found examinations challenging.

This shows that examinations cause fear in the minds of students, no matter how bright they are.
