ENGLISH TALENT PROGRAMME
MODERN PENTATHLON
A MESSAGE FOR THE ATHLETES 1
Firstly thank you for your interest in the sport of modern pentathlon and congratulations on your recent performances which demonstrates that you have a good athletic basis upon which to build and you may well have high potential in the sport of Modern Pentathlon.
We would, therefore, like to outline to you and your family the opportunity presented by the English Talent Programme which is a tiered development programme and the start of the talent pathway for our sport. To be successful at Modern Pentathlon requires a considerable amount of dedication and hard work but it is rewarding and the ultimate test of the complete athlete. It is also an Olympic sport allowing those who excel and reach the highest standards to compete as part of Team GB on the biggest stage of all.
Whatever your aspirations in the sport, we encourage you to commit to our ETP programme where you will benefit from high quality coaching, guidance and support to help you progress and learn the skills required whilst building on your athletic ability in order that you reach your full potential. On behalf of the whole Performance Team in Bath, we wish you every success if you decide to join the programme and we hope to see you at one of the National Competitions over the next few seasons. Remember, work hard, commit to the training and making personal improvements every day and ensure that you enjoy what you are doing.

ENGLISH TALENT PROGRAMME (ETP)
• The ETP is financially supported by Sport England with the aim of increasing the number of entry-level athletes achieving a pre-determined performance standard to underpin the Pentathlon GB Pathway at grass roots level in England.
• It is an opportunity for willing individuals to engage in training for Modern Pentathlon, to acquire necessary technical skills and improve general fitness. Commitment to training is essential because the most important objective is to ‘learn to train’ followed by ‘learning to compete’. These are elementary requirements for any entry-level athlete to progress through the Pentathlon GB Pathway system to sporting excellence.
• ETP athletes voluntarily accept that they will make the best efforts to fulfil a regular training schedule, taking into consideration geographic location, school demands, and training facilitiy availability to create a realistic and achievable training programme.
• The ETP programme will support committed athletes who demonstrate continued delivery of the training programme. This is made possible with quality coaching in facilities which are local and affordable.
• The ETP coaches will monitor, care and assist, combined with the desire to support and retain Pentathletes in the Sport to enable them to maximise their potential.
The following pages will give you the information required for the opportunity to become part of
THE ENGLISH TALENT PROGRAMME FOR PENTATHLON GB

At this Championship, distances for the Under 13 age group are the same as distances for the Under 14 age group which become applicable in the next calendar year as shown below.
4ENGLISH TALENT PROGRAMME (ETP)

11. On acceptance of the invitation for the ETP, parents and athletes will attend an induction day when further information about future training and competitions will be provided. Athletes will receive their training diaries and be eligible to purchase an ETP polo shirt.
12. Athletes will also be awarded a certificate and badge for the applicable level of ETP achieved.
13. Each ETP athlete will be assigned a regional athlete development coach who will be the local point of contact and support.
14. ETP athletes will be required to attend regular monitored training this may be at a PGB Academy or kite marked club. At these sessions combined with developing all disciplines of the sport athletes will receive support and advice to establish their individual training requirements. All ETP training will be conducted in line with all Pentathlon GB Safeguarding, Equity, and Child Protection policies ensuring a safe training and competition environment for all athletes.
15. ETP athletes will also be required to attend mandatory twice yearly training camps held in Spring and Autumn of each year. These camps will take place in the four quarters of the Country.
16. Athletes on the Programme will also be monitored and supported on
their progression by achieving the necessary certificates in fencing and riding, enabling them to compete in Tetrathlon and Pentathlon. This will be combined with twice yearly profiling and monitored attendance at both Regional and National Competitions.
17. Competitive experience is important for athlete development and therefore all athletes are encouraged to enter competitions locally and nationally, thereby gaining confidence and understanding. The ETP Coordinator and coaches can advise athletes on the appropriate level of competition.
18. If athletes on the ETP Silver Award level do not achieve the Gold Award they can stay on the programme and will be encouraged and supported to be a Young leader, Assistant Coach and Volunteer. This can be an important step onto the PGB Coaching Pathway and ultimately a career in Coaching.

19. During this period they will be invited by the WC Performance Team to train at selected Talent camps giving experience of training at the next level on the PGB Pathway. With the possibility opportunity of overseas training and competitions.
20. The World Class Performance team hold Pentathlon GB Talent ID opportunities. Invitation to the TID process can be for selected athletes via the NETP, ETP, results at the British Championship for Modern Biathlon or Modern Triathlon, and in exceptional circumstances identified talent transfer athletes.
21. Exit from the programme can be either by request from athlete/parent or by Pentathlon GB officials if they feel the athlete is not making the necessary progression required. This will only take place after a personal appraisal with consideration of the twice yearly tests, combined with competition attendance and results It is possible for an athlete to step off the program but return at a later date if all the standards of the criteria are achieved.
PROFILING IN THE ENGLISH TALENT PROGRAMME
During the early stages of being part of the Pentathlon GB Pathway athletes are not supported by a full time programme and the support they receive is via monthly ETP sessions and their training programme often through a variety of clubs and coaches. The athlete can sometimes not be aware of how they are progressing or what short term goals they need to focus on to improve. Athlete feedback is therefore essential. Since 2014 there has been the introduction of talent profiling into the ETP to help athletes with this challenge. Many sports profile their athletes as a means of supporting and assisting the athletes’ progression through the specific sport. The Development and Performance Teams of Pentathlon GB have been working together to produce a Profile Model for the ETP athletes. This was developed by looking back at an Olympic medallist and seeing what training they were doing, which skills and at what stage they developed them.
The profile has being developed for both male and females aged between 14 and 18 years old. Twice a year athletes will have the opportunity to be reviewed against the model profile and against previous profiles. This will enable Pentathlon GB to work with the athlete to provide guidance and support to help them to improve in key areas so that they can be closer to the Profile Model. During profiling sport specific and physical data will be collected along with information about their attributes. It is important to note that Profiling is not a test, talent identification tool or means for selection or de-selection and is not a means to compare athletes against one another. It is individualised and enables the athlete to receive individual advice and support.
To enable the athlete to make the most of the feedback from profiling a team approach is required. The athlete needs to be motivated and focus on improving in highlighted areas, parents as ever are needed for emotional support and logistics and the coaches who work with the athlete are required to facilitate achievement of short term goals.
