Accelerating trend towards fragmented market segments, with niches becoming smaller in terms of products or service specification, but growing in terms of the ability to service this market segment globally
Example:– QXL is an online auction house; its British & equal to USA’s
eBay; founded by Tim Jackson– It operates in Britain, France, Germany, and Italy and has seen
sales increasing at 20% a month. It organizes auctions between individuals want to buy and sell second hand goods
E-Commerce:
Its accelerating these trends as well Its most important innovation affecting business in current century Its creating enormous opportunities for small firms E-commerce entrepreneurs will exploit the immediate market opportunities to
create the e-commerce structure Some companies compete on price but some use e-commerce to
differentiate themselves They target niche markets for their products or services This trend creates opportunities for small firms that recognizes these trends E-commerce allow these companies to understand their customer needs Business access directly to customers, with out going through middle man This called ‘disintermediation’

Sandiford Computer Services ltd– Small software company set up in 1988– Only 15 employee– Bespoke process control software– Unique software development
Business Style– They develop and transfer display file to Honeywell TDC3000 distributor
control system– Despite of it size the company now sells this software production to
dozens of countries, including USA & Japan. They sells this production to Honeywell users. A Clearly defined and easily identifiable market segment, that Honeywell actually help them market to by identifying users. Saniford have succeeded in finding a niche in a global market
