Horse Breeds Quarter Horse: working ranch horse
– AQHA: largest horse breed assoc. in U.S.– fast sprinter (1/4 mile) = quarter horse– first breed developed in U.S. (1600’s)– most heavily muscled light horse– 14-16 hands tall at withers

Horse Breeds Thoroughbred: horse shows & racing
– faster at longer distances (1/4 - 2 miles)– jumping & hunting competitions– 15-17 hands tall
Horse Breeds Arabian: oldest recorded breed
– endurance, heat tolerant– known for good looks– 14-15 hands tall
Tennessee Walking Horse -known for fancy gait (walk)
Lipizzan
Color Breeds
Paint – Large patches of white with brown,
black or combination of the three. Palomino
– Light tan to golden color with flaxen mane and tail.
Appaloosa– Mixture of white with any other color to
create a pattern of spots. Mottled.
Draft Horses
Used mainly for work.– Before the invention of today's
machinery Now commonly used for pleasure
riding and showing. Also used for advertisements

Ponies
Used for:– Pleasure riding– Showing– Pulling buggies– Also, some breeds are good for children.
Miniature horses
Can be used as a guide for the blind.– Helping Hooves
Usually weigh between 55 and 100lbs.
Not a recognized breed. Used for showing and
companionship. Too small to be ridden.
