CourseDescriptionThiscoursewillengageinhiphop’s“politicsofauthenticity”whilealsoofferingaprimerontheparticipationandcontributionsofavarietyofsexual,gender,andracial/ethnicconstituentsinU.S.hiphop.Rightfullycenteringandhonoringthegenre’sAfro-diasporicinfluences,wewillexaminedebatesinvolvinggender,sexual,andracialboundariesinhiphop.Overall,thisclasswillpromptstudentstountanglehiphop’sseeminglycontradictoryethosof“keepingitreal”whilesimultaneouslypromotingbroaderidealsofcosmopolitanismandglobalcommodification.LearningObjectives• Narratehiphop’slinkstoBlackhistoricalandcontemporarycommunities,aesthetics,culture,andpolitics,whilealso

envisioningthedynamismandversatilityofblackness.• Interprethiphopasacontestedpoliticalterraininvolvingclaimstoauthenticityandpower.• Learnbydoing:activelycreate/curateartifactsandoriginalresearchthatexploredebatesoverU.S.hiphop
