During the COPS Operations Period EUMETSAT is providing the following data streams

MET-9 at 0° takes over the prime service from Met-8 on 11 April 07.
MET-8 at 3.4°W becomes backup satellite for the prime service on 11
April 07. After 10 May 07, will start RSS preparation. It will be relocated to
9.5 °E in Jan 08.
MET-7 at 57.5°E carries out the Indian Ocean Data Collection service.
MET-6 drifting to 67.5°E in support to MET-7 for the IODC DCP
acquisition in eclipse. Stop manoeuvres planned on 26 April 07. MET-6 co-
aligned with MET-7 beginning of April 07.

What is ‘Rapid Scanning’
For MSG we normally scan the full Earth disc every 15 minutes
To increase the temporal resolution (i.e. to decrease the time between scans) we can opt to scan a smaller area more frequently
This is ‘Rapid Scanning’ (it could also be called ‘Reduced Scanning’)

With MSG we can scan in 15 minutes either:
The same reduced area several times
The full disc
3 x 5 minute scan of the top 1/3 of the Earth15 minute scan of the full Earth disc

MSG Rapid Scanning during COPS Experiment
It is planned to introduce an operational MSG Rapid Scanning Service (RSS) by the second quarter of 2008
During summer of 2007 an intensive test and validation period to prepare for the operational RSS service is conducted
This validation period coincides with the COPS operational period (June, July & August of 2007)
It is a best effort activity to be as continuous as possible, but no service commitment can be made

Rapid Scanning Trials During 2007
24 hour rapid scanning tests made during MSG-1 and MSG-2 commissioning – results were largely OK
First extended rapid scanning trial (with Met-9 at 0 degrees) took place between 12-19 February 2007 - results look reasonable
Next extended trial (2 weeks) is planned for May using Met-8 at 3.4°W
Long continuous tests will coincide with COPS experiment
It looks as if it will be possible to perform almost continuous rapid scanning for the 3 months, but it will at least need a 1-2 day interruption every month
Should there be a need to modify the spacecraft procedures or to reconfigure the ground segment EUMETSAT reserves the right to do so

Data provision during COPS
Nominal Meteosat-9 Images will be disseminated via EUMETCast.
Nominal MPEF products will be disseminated via EUMETCast.
High resolution GII will most likely be available via FTP.
Radid Scan Images of Meteosat-8 will be disseminated via EUMETCast (subject to ground segment configuration).
All historic Image Data and Products are available from the EUMETSAT archive. Online ordering via the EUMETSAT Web Site (www.eumetsat.int).

Interesting Products for Nowcasting - GII
The Global Instability Indices (GII) Product:
A number of (empirical) instability indices are computed from the MSG image data, together with forecasted temperature and humidity profiles.
These indices describe the potential for convection during still cloud-free conditions.
The GII product includes e.g. the Lifted Index, the K-Index, and Total Precipitable Water

High resolution GII during COPS
For the COPS experiment it is planned to produce the GII product for the European area on a pixel basis.
The product will be made available in near real-time.
The distribution mechanism will most likely be via FTP service.

Metop data provision during COPS
During the time of the COPS campaign the Metop data will be available in near real-time via direct reception (HRPT receiving stations).
The global level 1b and level 2 products will be available via EUMETCast.
