Scope ELFM

• Enhanced Landfill Mining = • “integrated valorisation of landfilled waste streams as metals,

other materials and energy (carriers), using innovative transformation technologies and respecting the most stringent social and ecological criteria.” (http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.jclepro.2012.05.021)

• ELFM is both relevant for • ex situ mining (conditioning and excavation of waste +

subsequent processing and upcycling) • in situ mining (where metals and energy are generated from

the landfill body without excavating the waste).

• Various landfill types • Mixed USW/IW landfills • Monolandfills containing industrial residues and tailings

The rise of Enhanced Landfill Mining – the good news

• Flanders: Multi-actor research consortium since 2008

• > 10 national ELFM research/ demonstration projects are running

• Flanders, Wallonia, the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, Finland, Baltic Region, Austria, etc.

• Erection EURELCO in march 2014 - EIP RMC Status since early 2014

• Landfill mining in EIT KIC Factsheet

• Landfill mining integrated in EIT KIC RawMatTERS proposal

EURELCO Projects

Running projects: • > 10 National R&D projects

in Belgium, Germany, UK, Austria, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Greece etc.

• Supporting the CTC (Demonstration) Project of Group Machiels (cf. EIP RMC CTC)

• Strong link to new EU H2020 MSCA-ETN REDMUD project (connected to other EIP RMCs such as Mud2Metal, BRAVO)

EURELCO proposals: • Interreg Europe (in

preparation): “share and capitalise on regional good practices in developing and implementing Enhanced Landfill Mining principles and activities

• Urban Metabolism (WASTE-6) (in preparation)

• MSCA-ETN REMINE
