    Literacy Concepts:

    Learning letters Pp and Dd

Letters Pp and Dd were introduced through a Magic Bag and sand pit as the children looked for the

hidden Pp and Dd objects. They had fun in making a Pppp.. piglet and Dddd..duck as they came out with

lots of new words related to these sounds. Making their own pen stands in the pottery class added to their

    creative learning.

Long and short is fun: Learning the concept of long and short through twigs in the garden and comparing

them with the twigs their friends had collected was in itself a unique experience for the students wherein

their learning was self-guided and the teacher only acted as a facilitator.

Mr. Square: The Nursery students excitedly watched, the three friends- Banjy, Tracy and Polly (names

suggested by the children) come to the class room with a magical bag of squares and various other shapes.

Banjy would become happy only if he got the square objects thus teaching the children the concept of

square shape and also being happy with friends.

The tiny tots enthusiastically hopped from one table to another as they saw various objects to tickle their

senses. All their senses-Sight, Smell, Hearing, Taste and Touch- were taken care of as they saw using

binoculars, kaleidoscope; heard various musical instruments like tabla, harmonium; tasted salty, sweet,

bitter, sour food; explored various smells and also touched soft, hard, smooth & rough materials. The

world of senses was brought into the foyer of the school for an experiential learning which would remain

    with the children forever.

Learning about the factors needed for a seed to grow

The UOW topic of plants concluded with the activity plant a seed. The excitement of the tiny tots was

clearly seen as they took the small methi seeds in their hands and planted them in the pots with the help

of the school gardener. Appreciating the importance of plants for our environment, learning about their

different parts, the factors needed for them to grow, and also taking care of a new life were some of the

learnings imbibed by our students through this activity.

Let us punctuate the sentence right,

To make them meaningful and bright.

Children of Grade 1 played a game on punctuation for a better clarity and

understanding of the concept. The class was divided into groups. While

one group showed the placards with different expressions on them,

the other group guessed the expression and also punctuated the given

    sentence.

    Change the tense

    And frame a sentence.

Framing sentences was translated into an interesting activity from an

unvarying one when the second graders changed the tense of the verbs

from present to past and constructed sentences which spoke of their

vocabulary and proper descriptive language. This also enabled them to

understand the application of verbs in their past form in sentences.

    Gender Bender

Students of Grade 3 had great fun in creating a word search puzzle

from a few nouns belonging to the opposite gender that were listed

on the board. The task was to change the gender of the given

words into feminine and create a word search puzzle. The

excitement in them was evident as the puzzle started taking shape.

The students finally circled the words once the puzzle was created.

Which food is the healthiest of them all?

Students of Grade 2 made a food pyramid with pictures of different food

items collected by them. They divided the pyramid into four parts according

to the four food groups, namely, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals,

proteins and fats. Each tier in the pyramid represented one food group, the

lowest tier being carbohydrates followed by vitamins & minerals, proteins

and finally the tier closest to the tip represented fats. This triangular

representation of the optimal number of servings to be eaten each day gave

the second graders a fair idea of a balanced and healthy diet.

    Debating the First Debate

To get students excited about what they are learning, a

debate activity was held in Grade 3 on the topic Insects -

    Friends or Foe for plants.

The objective of the activity was for :-

students to use their critical thinking skills

students to nurture presentation skills , public

    speaking, research and team work.

    Gauging the Rain

Grade 4 children made Rain Gauges as part of their learning unit Sun, Wind, Clouds and Rain and kept

them at different places in the school garden to record their observations every day in their workbook.

The objectives of the activity were to-:

Can we measure a curved line? Students of Grade 6 were able

to measure the length of a curved line using a string. The string

was placed along the curved line, stretched straight and

    measured using a scale.

    Pump Your Blood

Students of Grade 5 learned how our heart pumps blood to

different parts of our body, with the help of a model, which was

made using a plastic bag and straw.

The objective of the activity was for the-:

Students to explore the working of the heart by watching

the blood (paint) rise up in the blood vessel (straw)

    Measurement in our everyday life

Before beginning the topic Measurement and Motion, the

students of Grade 6 reflected their understanding on the uses of

measurement in their everyday life through a group activity.

They listed out things for which they require units of

measurement in the most creative ways.

    Water-the Elixir of Life

While doing the concept of Getting to Know Plants, students of

Grade 6 were able to understand and observe that the stem of a

plant conducts water that is needed for its growth, through an

activity in the Science Lab. Stems of some plants were placed in

coloured liquid a day earlier. The next day, they observed a

section of that stem under a microscope. They saw the same

colour in the center of the stem which proved that the stem

    conducts water.

reactions using dilute Hydrochloric acid and Sodium Hydroxide

    solution.

    Exploring Sound

Students of Grade 8 performed certain activities

to know more about the characteristics of Sound

and the medium through which sound can

travel. By blowing through folded paper, they

proved that sound is produced by vibrations, by

scratching at one end of the scale and hearing at

the other end, they were able to justify that

sound travels through solids too. They were also

able to prove that sound travels faster in solids

    than it does, through air.

    Law of Conservation of Mass

To prove the law of conservation of mass, students of Grade 9 performed

an activity to weigh the reactants and products separately. They observed

that if the reaction was allowed to happen in a closed container, the weight

of the product formed was equal to the initial weight of the reactants.

    "Scientists are explorers"

While learning about the properties of acids, students of Grade 10

performed some activities in the lab to observe the properties of acetic acid

such as its smell, solubility in water, test with pH paper and effect on
