EW Series (Designs EWD/EWS/EWT)Sliding-Stem Control Valves through10 x 8- and 12 x 8-Inch SizesThe EW Series easy-e valves (figures 1 through 5)feature large internal cavities with expanded endconnections and a variety of unbalanced andbalanced plug designs. Sizes available from 4 x 2(1)
through 12 x 8 inches include 8 x 6 with 10-inchends and 10 x 8 inch sizes. These combinationsprovide good fluid control in economical,high-capacity valve bodies that keep valve outletvelocities within practical limits.
These valves meet a variety of service requirements, such as power plants where oversized piping is usedto limit fluid flow velocity. They also perform well innoise abatement applications; for example,high-pressure gas reducing stations where sonicvelocities are often encountered at the outlet ofconventional valve bodies.
The easy-e Valve Family
EW Series valves are part of the versatile easy-efamily of industrial control valves from Fisher. easy-evalves share the following characteristics:
 Multiple trim material choices
Trim temperature capability with metal seatsstandard to 800F (427C)
Interchangeable, restricted-capacity trims andfull-size trims to match variable process flowdemands
Different cage/plug styles that provide particularflow characteristics for highly-specializedapplications. The standard cage comes in threedifferent flow characteristics:

1. The pressure/temperature limits in this bulletin and any applicable standard or code limitation should not be exceeded.2. For temperatures above 450F (232C), a buttwelding-end CF8M (316 stainless steel) valve body with a Class 600 pressure/temperature rating must be derated; contact your Fisher salesoffice for details. Since ANSI standards do not allow use of intermediate ratings for flanged valve bodies, a Class 600 flanged-end CF8M valve body with B7 bolting must be limited either to450F (232C) or to inlet pressures consistent with Class 300 ratings.3. Only 12 x 8-in. Class 900 valve bodies with threaded (-1) seat rings can take full Class 900 pressure drops; Class 900 valve bodies with clamped (no dash number) seat rings are limitedto Class 600 pressure drops. Also, there are two different 8 x 6-in. Class 900 valve bodies, one for use only with Cavitrol III cages and the other for use with all other constructions. An 8 x 6-in.Class 900 valve body with Cavitrol III cage can take full Class 900 pressure drops. For information on other 8 x 6-in. constructions that can take full Class 900 pressure drops, contact yourFisher sales office. All other 8 x 6-in. constructions are limited to Class 600 pressure drops (1440 psid flowing drop) even though installed in a Class 900 valve body.4. Restriction based on excessive noise if max P/P1 ratio for a given cage level is exceeded.5. Down—in through cage and out through seat ring (direction shown in figure 2).6. 1. Refer to the valve specifications in this bulletin for pressure/temperature limits of valve parts. Do not exceed the pressure/temperature rating of the valve. Do not exceed any applicable codeor standard limitation.2. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has set a limit of 500 parts per million (ppm) for fugitive emissions from a valve in selected VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) services.3. In vacuum service, it is not necessary to reverse the ENVIRO-SEAL PTFE packing rings.
The temperature limits of Design EWT valves can beextended above 450F (232C) by using PEEK(PolyEtherEtherKetone) anti-extrusion rings incombination with a spring-loaded PTFE seal. ThePEEK anti-extrusion rings expand to close off the
clearance gap between the plug and the cage wherethe PTFE seal may extrude at high temperaturesand pressures. The temperature limits are extended

Features
Compliance with the Clean AirAct—Patented ENVIRO-SEAL packing systemsprovide a superior stem seal to help prevent the lossof valuable or hazardous process fluid. TheENVIRO-SEAL packing systems feature PTFE orgraphite packing with live-loading for reducedpacking maintenance.
Noise Attenuation—In an EW Series valve, noise produced by high flow rates and largepressure drops can be reduced by up to 18 dbA witha Whisper Trim I cage and by up to 30 dbA with aWhisper Trim III cage.
Piping Economy—Expanded end connectionsof EW Series valve bodies may reduce the need forline swages while accommodating oversized pipingarrangements used to limit fluid flow velocities.
Temperature Compensation—On designswith the seat ring threaded into the valve body(figure 5), the hung cage feature helps reducegasketing problems caused by thermal expansionand contraction of long parts, such as the cageassembly.
Standard Trim Parts across the easy-eproduct line—Included are FGM gaskets, packingflange, studs, and nuts.
High-Temperature, Class IV or Class VShutoff—Optional multiple piston rings (figure 14)for Design EWD and EWD-1 valve bodies permitClass IV shutoff up to 1100F (593C).Use of C-seal trim (see figure 6) permits Class Vshutoff up to 1100 F (593 C).
Increased Pressure/TemperatureRatings—12 x 8 inch Class 900 EW Series valvebodies with buttwelding end connections are capableof increased ANSI ratings called IntermediateStandard Ratings. The extra strength of the valvebody allows these valves to be used wherepressures and temperatures exceed Standard Classratings in ASME B16.34.
See Bulletin 59.1:027, IncreasedPressure/Temperature Ratings for EW Series SteelValve Bodies, for further information.
Sour Gas Service Capability—Optionalspecial trim and bolting materials are available forapplications handling sour fluids and gases. Theseconstructions comply with the recommendations ofthe National Association of Corrosion Engineers(NACE) MR0175. Because of the care exercised byFisher in procurement and manufacturing, additional testing and documentation to assurecompliance with the NACE standard is notrequired, in most cases.
C-seal Trim DescriptionC-seal trim (figure 6) is available for valves with portdiameters from 2-7/8 inches through 8 inches.
With C-seal trim, a balanced valve can achievehigh-temperature, Class V shutoff. Because theC-seal plug seal is formed from metal (N07718nickel alloy, Inconel 718) rather than an elastomer, avalve equipped with the C-seal trim can be applied inprocesses with a fluid temperature of up to 1100F(593C).
ENVIRO-SEAL and HIGH-SEALPacking Systems
The ENVIRO-SEAL and HIGH-SEAL packingsystems (figure 18) from Fisher offer exceptionalsealing capabilities. These systems easily install inyour existing valves or can be purchased with newvalves. These systems help you seal your process toconserve valuable process fluid and to protect theenvironment against the emission of hazardous orpolluting fluids. The long-life and reliability of thesesystems also reduce your maintenance cost anddowntime.
For applications requiring compliance withenvironmental protection regulations, Fisher offersthe unique ENVIRO-SEAL packing system and, forhazardous service, the ENVIRO-SEAL bellows sealbonnet (figure 19). The patented emission controlpacking system or seal bonnet keeps emissionconcentrations below the EPA 500 ppm requirement.
For a superior stem seal in applications that are notenvironmentally-sensitive, Fisher offers theHIGH-SEAL graphite packing system. TheHIGH-SEAL packing system provides superiorsealing at pressure/temperature ratings beyondENVIRO-SEAL limits.

NACE Standard MR0175 Compliance
Standard procurement procedures andmanufacturing processes used by Fisher assure thatcontrol valves with sour service trims comply withthe chemical and physical requirements of NACEstandard MR0175. Incoming raw materials areselected for sour service trims by specificationscovering chemical composition, forming, hardness, heat treatment, and finish. In addition, thesubsequent machining, welding, and heat treatmentof the materials being processed into finished partsis strictly regulated by manufacturing standards.
Because of strict start-to-finish manufacturing qualitymanagement, Fisher offers a high degree ofconfidence that the parts and assemblies providedfor sour service comply with MR0175. Additionaltesting and documentation to assure compliancewith MR0175 is not necessary, in most cases.

The requirements of the NACE standard are veryspecific and the application of the standard to controlvalve materials is quite complex. There are, however, some general guidelines that are alwaysfollowed:
All carbon steel valve bodies and bonnets areheat-treated to 22 HRC maximum and are post-weldheat-treated.
Martensitic and cast precipitation hardeningstainless steel are not used.
Control valve packing sets are jam style only.
Valve stems are made from S20910 (Nitronic 50).
Plating and coatings are used only oversuitable base metals and are not intended forcorrosion protection.
No machining operations that cause workhardening of the materials are performed in themanufacturing process.
Primary trim materials are S31600 and alloy 6.
Flat sheet gaskets are standardgraphite/S31600 (316 SST), spiral wound gasketsare standard Inconel 600/graphite.
Bolting in NACE MR0175 (non-exposedbolting) material is provided as standard. Bolting inNACE MR0175 (exposed bolting) material isavailable as an option.

Installation
Unless limited by seismic criteria, the valve body canbe installed in any position (as long as sufficientsupport is provided if a fabricated extension bonnetis used). However, the normal method is with theactuator vertical above the valve, since nonverticalpositions may cause uneven trim wear and
decreased trim life.
Flow through the valve body must be in the directionindicated by the flow direction arrow on the valvebody. Consider installing an upstream strainer, especially if the valve body includes slotted ormultihole Whisper Trim or Cavitrol cages.
Dimensions are shown in figure 20.

1. May be used down to –425F (–254C) if manufacturing process includes Charpy impact test.2. This minimum is due to thermal expansion differential between piston ring and cage at low temperatures.3. For high-temperature air, hydrocarbons, and certain other chemicals and solvents, but cannot be used with ammonia, steam, or hot water.4. Has excellent moisture resistance to hot water and steam and may be used with most fire-resistant hydraulic oils, but cannot be used with petroleum-based fluids and otherhydrocarbons.5. Cannot be used with fire-resistant hydraulic oils.6. May be used to increase hot water service capability to 450F (232C).7. This material may be used for cyclic temperatures or those above 450F (232C).8. Spring is used only with single PTFE V–ring packing; lantern ring replaces spring in other packings.9. Except 700F (371C) on oxidizing service.10. If used with PEEK anti-extrusion rings, PTFE/carbon seal ring may be used in temperatures up to 600F (316C) for non-oxidizing service or up to 500F (260C) for oxidizingservice.11. These materials not limiting factors.

1. For Class 900 valve bodies, only the plain bonnet is available. Contact your Fisher sales office for assistance if application conditions indicate the need for an extension bonnet for aClass 900 valve body.2. These in-body process temperatures assume an outside, ambient temperature of 70F (21C). When using any packing at low process temperatures, a cast extension bonnet mayhave to be used to prevent packing damage which could result from the formation of valve stem frost.
