Chatter Phenomenon using Boring Bars

1. Shaban A., "Effect of Some Design Factors on The Dynamic Performance of Boring
Bars"-1984
a. Static Stiffness
Load : Calibrated loading device
Response: Dial indicator
b. Impulse test of boring bars
Load: In same direction of the resultant cutting force. The Exciting force was
measured using a piezoelectric force transducer screwed on the hammer.
Response: Piezoelectric accelerometer fixed on the dummy tool in direction of
variation of the undeformed chip thickness.
Data Processing: 2-channel oscilloscope,HP-87 computer.
Reference: Sampling procedure (1)
c. Uniform flank wear land
Objective: attain a flank wear land of about 0.1 mm, to reach the range of uniform
gradual wear
Cutting Conditions: 40 m/min cutting speed, 0.08 mm/rev feed
Cutting time: 1 minute.
d. Limiting Width of Cut
Objective: Determine the limiting width of cut
Response: Piezoelectric accelerometer fixed on the dummy tool in direction of
variation of the undeformed chip thickness.
Detection of the onset of chatter : Chatter Detector (2)
Tool Overhang: 11mm
Tool replacement: 5 tests at low speeds(40 m/min), 2 tests at higher speeds
Tool holder : clamped with a torque of 80 N.m
Cutting Conditions: Width of cut 0.1 to 1.8 mm, Cutting speed 35 m/min, Feed 0.16
mm/rev.
Bar back tension: 3500N
2. Abu-Aesh M.A, "An Investigation into the self excited vibrations of boring bars on a
centre lathe"-1982
a. Determination of dynamic characteristics of boring bars
Free Vibration Test: using logarithmic decrement
Harmonic Excitation: Sine sweep excitation frequency, using electrodynamic
vibration exciter driven by fn generator. Response is measured using piezoelectric
accelerometer.
b. Boring bars : 20 mm to 38 mm, overhang : 90 to 267 mm
c. Excitation frequencies: 1.5 N from 60 hz to 900 hz
-
d. Cutting conditions: Cutting speeds (10,80,100 m/min) , feeds (0.08 to 0.035
mm/rev), width of cut (0.1 to 1.15 mm)
e. overhang of inserted cutting tool : 5 to 30 mm
f. plan approach angle : 45 ,60,70,90 degrees
