North/South Wing Demo – Façade ReplacementOVERALL DESIGN CONCEPT:
This project represents the physical context of the site and responds to the goals of the UCDMC through the following means:
The building facade is oriented toward the western edge of the campus, closest to Stockton Boulevard. The building face is set back about 100’ from the edge of the parking structure and provides a direct connection to the west entry. The building skin will also engage and wrap around portions of the existing bed tower and will need to integrate with exterior conditions that will remain in place.
This portion of the project is primarily a “re-skin” of an existing building . The selected materials must blend into the architectural character of the UCDMC campus. The design concept is an organizing idea centered around an inside-out and outside-in experience. The project addresses the functional need to provide identity as it will become the west facade of the existing hospital and highly visible from Stockton Boulevard .
It is desired to provide natural daylighting along the internal corridor and vertical circulation core of the East Wing and to provide a healing experience in context with the forms, materials, and color, of the existing and new structures, and the outdoor spaces around the campus. Building entries are a key component of all buildings on the campus. With a west facing entry facade, the project will also serve as the main staff entrance from Parking Garage 1. The West staff entry feature, circulation corridors, and internal elevator core will define the function behind a suggested curtainwall element. The parking structure will provide filtered shade and screened natural lighting into the landscaped area between the parking structure and the East Wing .
Landscaping will be limited to irrigation and hydroseeding with necessary walkways, and hardscape.
