bee: noun
a gathering of people for a specific purpose < a spelling bee >
from the Merriam-Webster Dictionary
Welcome to The Bee!
The origins of the spelling bee are not clearly known, and the first occurrence of the term appeared in print in 1875. Below is an excerpt from the National Spelling Bee’s website:
“Nine newpapers collaborated to start the National Spelling Bee in 1925. In 1941, Scripps took over sponsorship of the National Spelling Bee. There was no Scripps National Spelling Bee during the war years of 1943-45.
Co-champions experienced steady growth between the 1920s and 1970s, and between 1980 and 1990 the number of participants doubled. In recent years the program under went a second growth spurt - and a significant surge in popularity - thanks to live coverage on ESPN.
In 1991, Wisconsin resident, Joanne Lagatta from Madison, won the National Spelling Bee with the word: antipyretic.
In a world of auto-correct constantly fixing our errors (or causing new ones), it is inspiring to know that the Spelling Bee continues to inspire young people to achieve greatness both on stage and in the rest of their lives. So, it’s time to put your dictionaries away, make sure your shoes are tied and step up to the microphone.
Let the spelling begin.
