Principal: Mr. Mark Harding
Head Teacher: Ms. Barbara Henderson
Coordinator: Ms. Vicky Malito
At Second Street Community School, we are committed to be a respectful,
joyful, and safe learning environment where we all strive to be our best.
Family, Friends and Diversity
In February, we take time to celebrate friends, family and diversity on two special days: Family Day and
Pink Shirt Day. At 2nd Street, we too are a family and community of learners, friends and colleagues.
Community – a simple word, but it means so much to how we view ourselves as a school.
This year our grade 7 students once again participated in a provincial survey called the Middle
Development Index (MDI) that addressed the dimensions of health and well-being of our students. As a
school staff, we remain tremendously proud of the results that demonstrate that our students are thriving in:
Adult relationships
Peer relationships
Self esteem
Optimism
Empathy
These results remind us of what we already know: 2nd Street is a school with heart. As members of your
school family, we encourage you to take time on BC Family Day and Pink Shirt Day to celebrate diversity
and family values with your children. The BC Government is partnering with the BC Recreation and Parks
Association to bring family friendly events to communities across BC. Click here for more information:

ILLNESS
This month, many students are away from school due to illness. This is not unusual
for this time of year. Please help us all remain healthy by remembering to keep
your child at home if he/she is ill. We have had several students come to school
only to be sent home shortly after arrival due to illness. If you child is ill, and is at
home, please be sure he/she has recovered before returning to school. There is
no supervision inside at lunch in case they are ill. If they are too ill to go outside,
they should remain at home.
We are also reminding students to wash their hands frequently to prevent
spreading germs.
GRADE 7 PARENTS
Current Grade 7 Burnaby District students will automatically be registered for Grade 8 at the secondary
school within the designated attendance area where the student resides for September 2016. Students
who do not reside in the attendance area for the Secondary School they wish to attend, must submit a
Cross-District or Out-of-District Transfer Application to the school of choice. Please note that Cross-District
applications require Mr. Harding’s signature. Cross-District forms should be turned in to Ms. Sanders at the
office for processing and signature. If you have any questions please call Ms. Sanders at 604.664.8819.
KINDERGARTEN & CROSS DISTRICT REGISTRATIONS
Registrations for new Kindergarten (children born in 2011) for
September 2016 will begin on Monday, February 1st,
between the hours of 10am – 2 pm, no appointments are
necessary and will continue throughout the month of
February. Please contact the office at 604-664-8819 with
any questions, and check the Registration Requirements on
the Burnaby School District website regarding documents
you will need to bring with you. (Go to www.sd41.bc.ca,
click on the Parents tab; under the District Information you
will see Registration.)
As well, families wanting to send children to Second Street but living outside the catchment area must
complete a Cross-District Application form and have it signed by the catchment area school principal. For
more information, please contact the school secretary at 604-664-8819. These forms will be collected on
an ongoing basis but best to get them in as soon as possible.

MESSAGE FROM 2ND STREET’S BAND TEACHER
And The Band Played On . . .
On the evenings of December 16 at Seaforth Elementary and
December 17 at Nelson Elementary, students from all nine of Mr. D’s
elementary school bands performed for family and friends. At the
conclusion of the concerts, many from the audience were heard to
say how pleasantly surprised they were at the quality of the playing.
Mr. D was also very impressed with both performances where the 80
and 70 students played together so well while producing a beautiful
sound with excellent intonation. He is convinced the impressive
results achieved in the three months since students started playing
their instruments is a testament to the high quality of music
education they have received from music specialists throughout
their elementary school years. He hopes this will be the beginning of their instrumental experience in
Burnaby and that many of his students will be registering for high school band. In addition to all the proven
social and intellectual benefits derived from a music education, participating in a high school music
program provides students with a unique opportunity to continue through high school in the same class
with their friends.
