Clear plastic cups (2)
Gauze, cheesecloth, or
Wooden or plastic stir stick
Strawberries (2 or more)
Cold rubbing alcohol (1/2 cup)
An adult's household vodka
might work in a pinch!
Liquid dishwashing soap (2 tsp)
Salt (1 tsp)
Water (1/2 cup)
Lab station inventory:
coffee filter (1 piece)
DNA Extraction Buffer Ingredients:
Strawberry DNA extraction
Experiment #1
Whether you are ready with your lab coat and supplies,
or you'd prefer to cheer others on, you are more than
welcome and are sure to have fun!
Baking dish or shallow bowl
A handful of Q-tips
Liquid dishwashing soap
Food coloring (the more colors
the better!) or black pepper
Milk (enough to cover the
bottom of the dish)
Whole milk will work best
but you could experiment
with 2%

DNA ORIGAMIOnce you have your paper DNA strands ready, check out the folding instructions below!
Note: all folds should have a thin line on the inside and a thick line on the outside.
Fold in half lengthwise. Makeall creases as firm as possible(using your fingernail!).
Hold the paper so that thethick lines are diagonal andthe thin lines are horizontal.Fold the top segment downand then unfold.
Fold the top two segmentsdown along the nexthorizontal line. Unfold.
Repeat for all segments. Turn the paper over.
Fold along the first diagnolline. Unfold and fold along thesecond diagonal line. Repeatfor all diagonal lines.
Fold the white edge withoutletters up.
Fold the other edge awayfrom you. Partly unfold bothedges.
You can now see how themodel is starting to twist.
Twist and turn thepaper whilepushing the endstowards eachother.
Be brave!
Now let go!
Admire yourcompleted DNAdouble helix!
