Application History – Automotive

Audi A2/A8

1) 4 Rivet types – 1 rivet hardness, level 4

2) Only level 4 rivets were offered at the start of the project.3) Space frame design, driven by A8

SPR knowledge

DC CL Class

1) 7 rivet types, 3 rivet hardness levels

2) 50% are level 6, range of material stacks

3) High Cycle time and high number of tools

4) Only Henrob rivets, similar difficulty to XJ

5) Technical show case

BMW 5 Series

1) 5 rivets, 2 hardness levels, level 4 & 62) 8mm level 6 rivets only one supplier

Henrob3) 6mm level 4 rivets market place struggle to control the hardness.4) Bolt on riveted front structure

Jaguar XJ1) 16 rivet types 3 hardness level 2) Many rivets above 6mm in length3) 248 different joint stack4) Aluminium sheet, casting and extrusionUsed.5) HLSA also used6) Riveting through adhesive

The success of the XJ Vehicle has shown that SPR technology is not a barrier to mass production of light weight monocoque / space frame BIW

Page 77: Fastening Technology

Future Direction of HSPR

5. Expand the Rivet range and offer complementary products

Page 78: Fastening Technology

SPS Stud and Process

M5 – M6 Studs are available with and without a nut

Page 79: Fastening Technology

New SPS Stud and Process

Developed to give a Wider Operating Range

The New Henrob Self Piercing Stud can be used in single and multiple Steel and Aluminium sheets and Aluminium Extrusions

A single tool can attach studs to Aluminium sheet thickness’ from 1mm to 3mm without requiring a change of Die or Process

Torque values of >20Nm are maintained for the M6 studs across the range of thickness’

Studs are available with M5 and M6 threads in lengths 10mm to 25mm

Solid Rivet Development

Strictly Confidential - Henrob

Henrob have worked closely with Kurb Konus and developed a riveting system that fits with the standard SPR tool head envelop. The systems have been in production since the end of 2008 at Daimler/Magna.

Page 81: Fastening Technology

High Strength Steel Riveting

Henrob has developed a new range of rivets for joining high strength steels, heavy gauge steels and thick steel and aluminium applications.

The rivets were developed to facilitate the joining of Dual Phase (DP) and TRIP steels in the range 600 to 1000 Mpa using the existing Henrob setting equipment.

The high strength rivets are available in the length range 5 to 14mm, with Pan and Countersink Head Styles.

Henrob Limited has been developing a new range of Self Pierce Rivets which can be used to join High Strength Steels (HSS) to HSS. Plus HSS to aluminium, these products are now ready for production release.

Page 82: Fastening Technology

SPR and Magnesium-Henrob has been working with Meridian

- If the magnesium is used as the top sheet we believe we have solutions available today.

-The second phase is to look at the corrosion effects, this testing will take place over the next couple of months
