Training Overview
As Student Council representatives, it is your responsibility
to establish an accepting and fun online community. Students should feel welcome to share their ideas without
judgment. If you see that someone has posted on Facebook, make
sure to respond to the post within a day. This will indicate that their council reps are available and
encourage more interaction. Make sure to establish a respectful and kind online
community. Negativity should be avoided whenever possible.
When in doubt, treat everyone as you would if you ran into them on the street.
Online Community
Unfortunately, cyber-bullying is a very real issue in our society
and it should not be ignored. Bridgeway Academy does not tolerate bullying from its students.
By responding in a kind manner to all posts, you will establish the expectation that everyone is to be kind.
Remember that a number of students are homeschooling because of bullying within their local school so we do not want the same issue here.
If you notice any sort of cyber-bullying on Facebook, contact your Student Council Advisor immediately. Do not respond to the bullying until further instruction Review and make sure you understand how to identify cyber-
bullying. The definition is listed on the next slide.
Cyber-bullying
“Cyber-bullying” is defined as bullying through the use of
technology or any electronic communication, which includes but is not limited to any transfer of signs, signals, writing, images, sounds, data or intelligence of any nature transmitted in whole or in part by such things as electronic mail, internet communications, instant message, text message or facsimile. Cyber-bullying includes (i) the creation of a web page or blog in which the creator assumes the identity of another person or (ii) the knowing impersonation of another person as the author of posted content or messages, if the creation or impersonation is a violation under the law. Cyber-bullying also includes the distribution by electronic means of a communication to more than one person or the posting of material on an electronic medium that may be accessed by one or more persons, if the distribution or posting is a violation of the law.
Definition of Cyber-bullying
“Rule of Thumb: You should conduct yourself in social media
forums with an eye to how your behavior or comments might appear if we were called upon to defend them as a school organization. In other words, don’t behave any differently online than you would in any other public setting.” (npr.org) This quote clearly defines how our Student Council
representatives are expected to behave online at all times. Please remember that your words and actions are public. As a Student Council Representative, you will be held
accountable for your interactions online with your fellow students. When in doubt, if you think even one person would be hurt or
offended by your comments, please refrain from making them.
Accountability
There are going to be times that your fellow
classmates might respond to a post in a confrontational manner.
It is important as their Student Council leaders that you refrain from taking sides or responding in a confrontational manner.
Instead, focus on staying impartial and encourage a positive flow of information.
If the exchange is becoming heated and requires an adult intervention, please contact the SC Advisor for guidance.
Impartiality
“Liking” pages can be a great resource for you and your
followers. Liking pages for colleges, scholarship searches, and
resourceful tips are all great so you don’t miss anything they post.
You must be mindful though when liking a page. Be careful to not like any pages that might be found offensive
or distasteful. When in doubt, check with the SC Advisor before liking a page.
Sharing is a great way to share funny sayings or valuable information with all of your followers. Once again, make sure to only share items that can pertain to
everyone and won’t cause an uproar.
Likes and Shares
Your posts should elicit some sort of response
from your classmates. You can do this through posting questions or
thought-provoking ideas. You should also have fun with your posts so don’t
be afraid to post something comical that your classmates can relate to and enjoy.
Take notice of the types of posts which elicit more interaction from your classmates for future ideas. As the year progresses, your posts should become
easier and easier to elicit responses.
Content
When posting information on Facebook, you
MUST verify that it is valid and accurate. This means you might need to do some research before posting. Check with the SC advisor if it is Bridgeway
related Confirm with multiple sources if it’s an external
link/information Confirm with the SC advisor that it is
appropriate to post
Accuracy
It is important to remember that nothing you post online is private. All
interactions online should be conducted with honesty, care and compassion.
As a Student Council member, you are now a Bridgeway Academy representative. All of your interactions online should be done with the knowledge that anyone at Bridgeway could view your words.
An important question to ask yourself before posting is “would I make my parents, or better yet God, proud with the words I’m about to post”? If the answer is No, then delete it immediately and wait until you have
something worthy of sharing. Even when interacting with your friends or family, you should be
mindful of your words. If it is brought to our attention that your interactions online are offensive,
you will be contacted by Bridgeway Administration to discuss disciplinary action.
Honesty/Transparency
All posts and online activity will be overseen by the SC
Advisor. If you have any doubts about how something will be
perceived, contact the Advisor first for clarification on how your post should be worded.
Posts should be outlined a month in advance and be posted on a regular schedule. For example, every M, W, F at noon.
All main posts (discussion starters, announcements, etc.) will need prior approval before going live.
If the Vice President will be unable to post on FB due to scheduling or lack of internet access, the VP should request assistance from another Council member or the SC Advisor.
