Wow! We hear some words from Jesus in today’s Gospel reading that sound pretty harsh, at least at first hearing. Let us look at the message that Jesus shares with his disciples in today’s Gospel and see how it applies to us today. The beginning of the text begins with Jesus imploring his disciples to have righteousness that is greater than the scribes and the Pharisees. The scribe in Jesus’ time was a group of men whose main focus in their work was to draft legal documents, copy the Old Testament Scriptures, be scholars of the Old Testament Law, and study those scriptures and to offer interpretations on how they should be applied to daily life. The Pharisees at the time of Jesus’ life were a group of Jewish religious leaders comprised mostly of middle-class businessmen who in many respects operated as a political party. They understood the Scriptures to be divinely inspired, but they also placed quite a bit of emphasis on Jewish oral traditions which founded their roots back to the time of Moses. Like the scribes, they too were understood to be legal experts. These two groups of people were supposed to be the holy ones in society, but far too often they either did not live up to how they were supposed to live or they missed the point in their interpretation of God’s law. So Jesus is essentially saying that his followers are to be even more virtuous than these two groups. The group of followers to whom Jesus is addressing includes us! Jesus lays out a series of teachings for how we can live the type of righteous lives that he is calling us to. Jesus offers a number of examples of how we ought to live through a series of “You have heard it said… but I say to you” statements. In our reading today, Jesus presents three teachings to his followers: a teaching about anger, a teaching about adultery, and a teaching about oaths. Each of these three teachings follows a similar pattern of presentation: first, Jesus presents how each of these teachings has traditionally been offered (the “you have heard” part), and then he moves to a deeper understanding of what the particular teaching truly means for one’s life (the “I say to you” part). Let us look at each of these teachings again. (Reread each of the three groupings of teachings.) Ultimately, Jesus is laying out for us an ethic for how we ought to live.

BIBLE NEWS What is God saying to me? The Bible is not addressed only to

long-dead people in a faraway land. It is addressed to each of us in our own unique situations. When we read, we need to un-derstand what the text says and how the faithful have under-

stood its meaning in the past. In light of this understanding, we then ask: What is God saying to me?

“A day devoted to the Bible should not be seen as a yearly event but rather a yearlong event, for we urgently need to grow in our knowledge and love of the Scriptures and of the risen Lord, who continues to speak his word and to

break bread in the community of believers.” -Pope Francis

Need a Catholic Bible? The New American and The Good News

are Catholic translations of the Bible. Copies of the Catholic Bible will be sold in the St. Bernard Church gift shop. If

you have any questions please speak with Terry or one of the gift shop volunteers. we prepare for the Lenten Season and following the Holy Fathers lead on the first weekend of Lent,

February 29 & March 1, we invite all parishioners to bring their family bible to church and have them Blessed at Mass.

Stewardship Thought “For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom

of heaven.” (Matthew 5:20) The scribes and Pharisees lived according to the letter of the law, and they used this to elevate themselves above the other people. Jesus is clear-it’s the love that you have in your heart that will get you to heaven. Simply following church rules out of obligation, not love, does not put you on the path to heaven. Attending Mass on Sunday and then gossiping about a fel-low parishioner in the parking lot is an example of a modern day Pharisee.

Parish Registration Are You Registered?

Did you know that Demographic studies estimate that more than 1/3 of all Catholics are not registered in a parish?

If you are not registered in our parish, please consider doing so.

Also, please encourage your friends and family to register! Registering is important because:

♦ If a parish doesn’t know who is out there, how can it adequately serve the needs of all – especially singles, divorced or young families who may not see the need to register?

♦ When the services of the Church are needed - such as for a wedding, Baptism or funeral - it is quicker if the person is registered.

♦ Registered parishioners receive helpful information about our parish including upcoming events.

Registering is easy. Simply contact the parish office today at 718-763-5533!
