Sustaining Sustainability As one who seldom seeks movies for information or even entertainment, I saw two movies within a span of two months. This is more than I usually see in a year. Both documentaries are getting the attention of those who have an interest in or concern for contemporary social, political, educational, environmental or health issues and all things that matter to the human being. ‘Ike, Knowledge is Everywhere takes a look at examples of successful practices in Hawaii’s education. It is a sequel to Ola, Health is Everything. Both films showcase all things that work for us where we live, thus sustain us. Cowspiracy, the Sustainability Secret,* is the personal journey of a filmmaker who was in-spired by Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth. This is an example of compelling circumstances and events that influences an individual’s choice. Humility and gratitude are themes that underscore both documentarians and their crew as they make their work available to all. It is about affecting change to make a difference both within ourselves and with all that surrounds us. Each year, our organization selects and features a five year theme with related annual slogans that aim to inspire and sustain us as we step on the moving Nembutsu pathway. This year we are guided by the words, Embrace Change; Awareness (Seek Opportunities). These words have no inherent power in and of themselves, nor do these words create any concrete example of reality. Fortunately, we are able to create a reality for ourselves because we have this existence and accompanying experiences, the capacity, and willingness to do so. These elements are sourced with a grateful heart and a humble mind, the energy that fuels and compels change that sustains us. When we are moved into action by humility and gratitude, we are one with the teachings. *Cowspiracy, The Sustainability Secret screening is open to the public at Mililani Hongwanji on Tuesday, March 24, 2015 beginning at 7:00 pm.

President’s Corner

Aloha members and friends, On February 12th, several of our members will be attending the “Rap Session” in the evening before the annual (103rd) Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii’s Legislative Assembly (Giseikai). The topic of this year’s Rap Session will be the organization of the Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii (HHMH) and how the HHMH can better serve the temples, mem-bers, and to share the Dharma and Jodo Shinshu in Hawaii. Over the years, the needs of the temples and members have likely changed and I encourage you to discuss and share your thoughts with our temple leaders to help us better understand various viewpoints, concerns, and ideas. In my President’s address for 2015, I shared an assessment of the temple, including the Planning Committee, Milila-ni Hongwanji “Identity”, Communication and Technology, Membership, Facilities Master Plan, Buddhist Education, Services, 40th Anniversary, Community Outreach, and Sustainment. As we move forward, I humbly ask for your support and assis-tance and welcome any ideas (and healthy criticism) that you may have. Our 40th Anniversary Committee will be participating at Mililani High School’s carnival which will be held on February 20-22. Mililani Hongwanji will have a booth to sell items to

raise funds for the 40th Anniversary and if you are able to help please contact Vice President Rene Mansho to sign up for a shift. This will also be a great opportunity for our temple to participate in and to gain some exposure within our community. Finally, our committees for 2015 are being formulated and I encourage you to serve on a committee as a way to help your temple. Non-Board members can (and are asked to) serve on committees. If you are interested, please contact a Board member. In gassho.

The Buddhist Study Center (BSC) will offer a full program of classes for beginners to devotees starting in January 2015. The Dharma Light Pro-gram, developed at the Hawaii Betsuin Temple, has moved to the Buddhist Study Center to better serve the community and Kyodan tem-ples. Under the BSC, classes will be offered throughout the year at the BSC and at local temples. The program is designed to gradually develop understanding of both basic Buddhist teachings and Jodo Shinshu (“Shin”) concepts, as well as serve as a resource for ministers’ lay assistant education. For more information, con-tact: BUDDHIST EDUCATION CLASSES www.tinyurl.com/bschawaii

Scout Sunday Service The Mililani Hongwanji will be celebrating their an-nual Scout Sunday service on February 8. Scout Sunday was started in the mid 1940’s to celebrate the founding of the Boys Scouts of America in 1910. Scout Sunday is traditionally done on the Sunday preceding February 8th. This tradition was started to make the Scouts congregation aware of scouting and to allow Scouts to live up to their Scout Law, one of which indicates “a Scout is Rev-erent”. The Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of Mililani Hongwanji will be our emcees and our guest speak-er will be Ty Yamamoto, a Senior at Mililani High School and an Eagle Scout from 2013.

THANK YOU! We again donated several bags of toiletries to the Insti-tute of Human Services, Women and Children Homeless and Emergen-cy Shelter and were able to donate a large shopping bag filled with bars of soap to the U.S. VETS Housing at Barber’s Point, Kalaeloa. Both organizations were very appreciative of your donation. Thank you everyone for your support!

be made with any kind of paper such as magazine pages or old calen-

kitchen preparing breakfast for the workers.

and spend a Saturday morning with members of our Sangha.

AED Training The Board of Directors authorized a training session for use of our Automated External Defibrillator (AED). There are over 350,000

cases each year of cardiac arrests, and only 5% of the victims will survive. It is our mission to increase the chance of survival through training and preparedness. We are hoping that our members, affiliate or-ganizations, like BWA, Dharma School, Jr. YBA, Judo, Aikido, Qi Gong, Adult Day Care, Lotus Connection, Ike-bana, and friends will sign up to for the training ses-sion to be comfortable in using our AED in times of emergency.
