AS A GROUP WE SAW THE SITE AS ONE OF HUGE OPPORTUNITY. SITUATEDBETWEEN THE MILLENIUM STADIUM, ALL THE MAIN TRANSPORT LINKS AND THE RIVER TAF, IT OCCUPIES A KEYLOCATION IN CARDIFF.

AESTHETICALLY PLEASING PART OF THE SITE WAS THAT WHICH LAY IN DIRECT CONTACT WITH THE RIVER TAF.

THE DECISION WAS MADE TO FLOOD THE SITE, GIVING ALL OF OUR RESIDENTS ACCESS TO AND VIEWS OF THE WATER, WHILST CREATING A NEWHARBOUR IN THE CENTRE OF CARDIFF.
TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE OF STAGNANT WATER, A CHANNEL WAS INTRODUCED TO FLUSH THE HARBOUR THROUGH.

EACH BAND EQUATES TO AN ASPECT OF THE BRIEFAND FOLLOW THE LINES OF THE SITE FRAMING THE WATER.
THE PLAN FOR THE SCHEME IS, EFFECTIVELY SHOWN BELOW, A CLEAR RESPONSE TO THE SITE. A GRID IS THEN LAID ONTOP TO PRODUSE THE GRAIN OF THEUNITS.

G10 MY GROUP - ‘SOLAR 5’ - WERE GIVEN THE
CHALLENGE OF MAXIMISING SOLAR EXPOSURE. IINTERPRETED THIS AS MAXIMISING THE AMOUNTOF NATURAL LIGHT THAT ENTERS THE RESIDENCES.
IN RESPONSE TO THIS, I BANKED MY ACCOMODA-TION ON THE NORTHERN PART OF THE SITE, WHICH ALLOWED ALL UNITS TO HAVE SOUTH FACING WINDOWS.

TAKING PRECEDENT FROM THE AGRICULTURALTERRACING IN SOUTH AMERICA, I STEPPED THEGREEN PUBLIC SPACE DOWN TO THE WATER INORDER TO MAKE IT A THEATRICAL SPACE, WITHTHE STEPS ACTING AS ROWS OF SEATS.
TO MAXIMISE THE AMOUNT OF SUNLIGHT HITTINGTHE WATER, THE RETAIL UNITS WERE PLACED IN ARCADES UNDERNEATH THE EXISTING ARCHES OF THE RAILWAY.

THE DESIGN PRINCIPLES FORMY INDIVIDUAL HOUSINGUNITS WERE A CONTINUA-TION OF MY SCHEMATIC, BUT ON A SMALLER SCALE.I HOPED TO MAXIMISE AC-CESS TO SUNLIGHT(i), ANDCREATE A RURALITY WITHINEACH UNIT, JUST AS THESCHEME WAS A GREEN LANDSCAPE WITHIN A DENSE URBAN ENVIROMENT. I WAS ALSO INTERESTEDINCREATING A BUILDING WHICH WAS ADAPTABLE TO THE CHANGING WEATHER IN CARDIFF, AND COULD OPEN ANDCLOSE TO ALLOWEXTRA OUTDOOR SPACE.
