About Butterfly Garden "Chouno-Sato"

Oizumi Chuo Park with Dancing Butterflies

Butterfly Garden is a piece of land with an area of about 500 m2 reclaimed in the corner of Sorin Square, around the 11th year of Heisei (1999), to create a natural environment to attract the Swallowtail Butterfly, plant life is the main food source for the butterflies (insect edible herbs), honey-producing plants (nectar-derived plants) are planted to attract butterflies.

Oizumi Chuo Park, is located on the return trail from Asaka and the U.S. Army installation. Asaka (originally a golf course), was opened in the 2nd year of Heisei (1990) after reconstruction, and it is a park covering approximately 10 hectares. It incorporates such areas as the Forest of Wild Birds and Sorin Square. There is a concentrated preservation of existing tree species in the Park and many different kinds of butterflies can be viewed in this, the Butterfly Garden.

Butterfly Garden "Chouno-Sato" won “The Award of Director General of City Bureau, Ministry of Land.Infrastructure and Transport” in the 32nd Metropolitan Park Competition and others!!

The mouth of an adult butterfly, known as the mouthpart, is similar to a long suction tube, and butterfly sucks nectar through the straw-like mouthpart. Plants providing nectar are generally referred to as nectar-derived plants. There is a large leaf Butterfly Bush (buddleja) favored by most butterflies and there are also Trees of Heaven and Glossy Abelia among others, favored by the Swallowtail Butterfly in the Hometown of Butterflies, many varieties of butterflies can be seen here due to the existence of these nectarderived plants.

The leaves of plants eaten by butterfly larvae vary according to their species. We call herbs for butterfly’s edible herbs. In the Hometown of Butterflies, a large number of edible herbs for the larvae of Swallowtail Butterfly are planted, so we can see a mass of larvae of these butterflies.

Butterfly Garden "Chouno-Sato" was successfully renewed in October in the 28th year of Heisei (2016) through environmental management of the forests and new signage for the edible herbs and nectar-derived plants tree etc. for the creation of a habitable environment favored by butterflies, which added a new and unique charm to the park. After which, the project won The Award of Director-General of City Bureau, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport in the 32nd Metropolitan Park Competition (hosted by General corporation aggregate Japan Park Greenbelt Association and supported by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism).

After being hatched from eggs, butterflies will go through several stages including larvae, pupae through to adulthood, respective forms of butterflies in different stages are different from those in other stages, and this is known as complete metamorphosis, which is common to this species of insects. Depending on the species, butterflies can reproduce a number of times in a one year cycle.

Butterflies lay their eggs on plants that can be used as food by the

larvae.

Most species of butterflies emerge from pupae in the

morning and become adult butterflies.

Depending on the species, the larval

butterfly undergoes several transformations and eventually develop

into pupa.The larvae grow by

eating the plant after being hatched.

If calculated from the date of hatching, the life of Swallowtail Butterfly is about 40 to 50 days. Although there will be some changes depending on the temperature, the eggs are usually hatched in 5 days, and then go through several stages including larvae, pupa and adult, i.e. so-called complete metamorphosis. Adults can survive for about 2 weeks.

The key to attracting butterflies is to carefully select plants and edible herbs that are part of the butterfly diet. Strict selection of plants for your home will allow butterflies to be attracted to an area or environment. Selecting plants favored by butterfly larvae will increase the likelihood, and butterflies are likely to lay eggs on the plant life in this way, the eggs grow into pupae after being hatched and finally grow into fully developed butterflies.

The size of butterfly wings is a benchmark for our classification of butterflies. First of all, we can take photographs to observe them in detail.

Butterflies usually emerge from pupae in spring and summer, and grow into adulthood stage by stage, so the best season to observe butterfly adults is between spring and summer. (Depending on the individual, the adult stage is may be somewhat different.)In addition, we can catch butterflies to observe them and then set them free.
