WCCNURSERYSCHOOLORGANIZATIONTheWayzataCommunityChurchNurserySchool(WCCNS)wasfoundedin1955withNormaRungeasthefirstDirector.WCCNSisaministryofWayzataCommunityChurch(WCC)asaservicetooursurroundingcommunities.WCCNSisanon-profit,non-denominationalschoolofferingoldertoddler,preschool,andPre-Kindergartenclasses(September-June).WCCNSoffersanoptionalExtendedCareprogramscheduledbeforeandafterclasssessions.SummerCampclassesarealsoofferedinJune,July,andAugust.WCCNSwelcomesandenrollspersonsofanyrace,color,religion,creed,orsocioeconomicbackground.TheStateofMinnesotaDepartmentofHumanServiceslicensesWCCNSunderRule3.Additionally,WCCNSisaccreditedbytheNationalAssociationfortheEducationofYoungChildren(NAEYC)andisfour-starratedbyParentAware.ThepurposeoftheWCCNSParentOrganizationistoenhanceandsupporttheeducationexperienceatWCCNS;todevelopacloserconnectionbetweentheschoolandhomebyencouragingparentinvolvement;andtoimprovetheenvironmentatWCCNSthroughvolunteerandfinancialsupport.(WCCNSPOBylaws–approvedMay2011).TheWCCNSParentOrganizationcoordinatesamyriadofevent,fundraisers,andvolunteeropportunitiesthroughouttheschoolyear.EveryfamilywithachildenrolledinWCCNSisamemberoftheParentOrganization.Weinviteyoutoattendameetingandgetinvolved!

WAYZATACOMMUNITYCHURCHWCCNShasauniqueandspecialrelationshipwiththeWayzataCommunityChurch(WCC).WCCNShasanon-denominationalcurriculumbutitisalsopartoftheWCCcommunity.ManyoperationalfunctionsofWCCNS,includinguseandmaintenanceofthebuildingandgrounds,thebudget,banking/financialprocedures,personnel,andpayrollaresupportedbyWCC.LauraJanckila,WCC’sDirectorofOperationsfacilitatestherelationshipbetweenthechurchandthenurseryschoolandprovidessupporttotheWCCNSDirectorwhenneeded.AnyquestionsabouttheWCCNSParentOrganizationshouldbedirectedtotheWCCNSDirectorat952-473-2114.

WCCNSPHILOSOHYANDSTRUCTUREThephilosophyofWCCNSstressesthegrowthanddevelopmentoftheindividualchild.Tohelpeachchildgainconfidenceandself-esteemwhilelearningtofunctioninagroup,weplanforbothindividualchoicemakingandgroupinteractions.Ourprogramincludessocial,emotional,physical,andintellectualgrowthexperiences.Webelievethatchildrenlearnbestthroughtheirplayexperiencesaswellasthroughastructuredenvironment.Eachdayteachersdesignlearningopportunitiestomeettheneedsoftheindividualchildaswellastheentiregroup.Ourcurriculumincludescreativeart,music,science,creativedramatics,cooking,languagearts,dramaticplay,cognitivedevelopment,largeandsmallmuscledevelopmentandoutdoorplay.AcopyoftheWCCNSCurriculumGoalsisavailableintheWCCNSoffice.Eachclassroomteamofteachersplansdevelopmentallyappropriateactivitiesthatareespeciallysuitedtotheage,abilitylevel,andinterestsoftheirclass.Atypicaldayincludes:- Afreechoicetime(includinglearningcenters)duringwhichthechildrenmakeindividual
decisionsaboutactivitiesandcompanions.Duringthistime,somematerialsarealwaysavailable,e.g.blocks,puzzles,books,dramaticplay,sensorytable,andfreearttable.Othermaterialsarechangedfrequently,e.g.creativeartmedia,art/craftprojects,dramaticplaythemes,scienceandcookingprojects,andvariousmanipulatives.
- Agrouptimeofferingastory,dailydiscussions,andsharingofinformation.- Amid-morningormid-afternoonsnackthatincludestheavailabilityofmilkorwater.Peer
andteacherinteractionisencouragedduringsnacktime.Asnackmenuforeachclassispostedoneachclassroom’sparentbulletinboardandwithintheweeklycurriculumplan.
- A30-minuteMusic&Movementclassisofferedweekly.Musicincludessinging,
listening/movingtomusic,andplayingavarietyofrhythminstruments.Musicrelatedmind/bodyactivitiesalsoemphasizemulti-culturalthemesandtraditions.
- Largemuscleactivities,bothstructuredandunstructured,areofferedeitheronthe
playgroundorinourlargemuscleroom.- Eachclassroomprovidesadailyschedule,weeklycurriculumplan,andparentnewsletter.
Thesearepostedoneachclassroom’sparentbulletinboard.Eachmonthparentsreceivethe“CubbieNews”newsletter,whichispublishedbytheWCCNSParentOrganizationandprovidesparentswithinformationaboutupcomingschool-wideeventsandactivities.
- Parentsareofferedtwoparent/teacherconferencesduringtheschool(fallandspring).
Theseconferencesofferparentsandteachersanopportunitytoshareinformationaboutthechild’sgrowthandprogressintheareasofintellectual,physical,social,cognitive,andemotionaldevelopment.Parentswhohavequestionsorconcernsatothertimesthroughouttheschoolyear,mayrequestaseparateconferencewiththeirchild’sclassroomteachersortheDirector.

- Eachchild’srecordsanddocumentationarekeptinafileatWCCNS.Thechild’sfileisavailabletoparentsforreviewuponrequest.Parentsarewelcometovisittheschoolandtheirchild’sclassroom.Parentsarealsoencouragedtobecomeinvolvedandconsiderthemanyvolunteeropportunitiesavailablethroughouttheprogramyear.
- Priortoschoolbeginninginthefall,parentsandtheirchildareinvitedtovisittheschool,
theirchild’sclassroom,andmeetwiththeirchild’steamofteachers.Classroomteacherscoordinatetheschedulingofthesevisits.

- Familieswillbeunabletoenrollforanupcomingterm(i.e.Fall,Summerprogram)untilallpreviousaccounts(tuitionandExtendedCare)arepaidinfull.Fundssubmittedforanewtermwillbeusedtoclearallpendingaccounts.Ifnecessary,apaymentplancanbearrangedwiththeWCCNSDirector,AssistantDirector,orWCCFinanceDirector.
- Summerprogramtuitionmustbepaidbeforethechildattendsthefirstday.- Allreturnedcheckswillbesubjectedtoa$10fee.

PARENTINFORMATIONSpecialEventsInadditiontolimitedplannedfieldtrips,WCCNSandeachclassroomoffersotherspecialprograms,activities,andevents.FamilyVisitNightisheldinSeptember.InOctober,aprofessionalphotographerisscheduledtotakepicturesofthechildrenandclassrooms.ParentInteractiveDaysareplannedandimplementedbyeachclassroomthroughouttheschoolyear.DuringDecember,classroomthemescelebratefamilytraditionswithmusic,creativearts,andspecialactivities.WCCNSholdsanOpenHouseinJanuarywithcurrentfamiliesandprospectivefamiliesinvitedtolearnaboutWCCNSandnextyear’sclasses.InApril,WCCNScelebrates“TheWeekoftheYoungChild”(NAEYC–NationalAssociationfortheEducationofYoungChildren)withanartfairandaschool-widemusicprogram.Aspecialyear-endcelebrationisalsoheld.Noticesofcommunityclasses,events,andothergeneralinformationappropriateforpreschoolersandtheirfamiliesarepostedontheParentEducationandInformationbulletinboardlocatednexttotheStaffResourceRoom.Informationmayalsobeprovidedinweeklyclassroomnewslettersandthemonthly“CubbieNews”publication.ObjectsFromHomeWhileatraditional“ShowandTell”timeisnotpartofourprogram,childrenareencouragedtobringitemsfromhomeofspecialinterestthatmayrelatetotheclassroomtheme.Bringingtoystoschoolisdiscouragedassometimesitisdifficultforyoungchildrentoshareanditcanbecomedifficulttoseparatehometoysfromschooltoys.Duetoallergyconcerns,WCCNSalsodiscouragesfamiliesfrombringingfoodorspecialtreatsunlessaplanhasbeenmadewiththeclassroomteachers.Veryimportantsecurityobjectssuchasblankets,stuffedanimals,etc.maybebroughttoschoolwhennecessary.Wealsoaskparentstonotsendbirthdaypartyinvitationstoschooltobedistributedinthechildren’scubbies.Wetrytoavoidhurtingthefeelingsofthoseclassmateswhomaynotbeinvited.Children’sPersonalBelongingsChildren’sclothing(especiallycoats,jackets,snowsuits,hats,boots,mittens)shouldbeclearlylabeledwiththechild’sname.Everyday,comfortableclothingandclosed-toedshoesappropriateforplayaresuggested.Eachchildwillhaveacubbyfortheirbelongings.Althoughtheschoolprovidessmocks,parentsandchildrenneedtounderstandthatclothingmaycomeincontactwithpaint,water,glue,sand,anddirt.Ithelpsthechildrenandteachersifthechild’sclothingiseasyforhim/hertohandlei.e.largeenoughtosliponandoff,easilyfastenedandundone,andhaveclosuresthatthechildcanlearntouse.Weaskparentstohelpusencouragechildrentolearnhowtohandletheirownclothing.Offerjustthehelpnecessarye.g.“IfIplugyourzipperin,I’llbetyoucanzipitup”or“Whenyougetyourshoeson,I’llbegladtotiethem.”Wetrytogetoutsideandenjoyalltheseasons.Pleasedressyourchildfortheweather.Ifthetemperature/windchillisbelow10degrees,thechildrenwillusethegymfor20minutesofphysicalactivity.Duringtheday,thetemperaturescangetabove10degreessopleasebringyourchildpreparedtogooutsideeachday.

ArrivalandDepartureParentsshouldparkontheEASTsideofthebuildingandusetheEASTdoorentrance(nexttoplaygroundarea).Ampleparkingisavailable.Parentsshouldbringtheirchildtotheirclassroomteacherunlessinstructeddifferentlybytheclassroomteacher(s).Parentsneedtosigntheirchildinwhendroppingoff.Classroomteachershavespecificroutinesforparentstofollowwhendismissingchildren.Pleasedonotleavechildrenaloneinthecar.Andpleasedonotleaveyourcaridling.Theserulesareforthesafetyofthechildren.Ifyourchildneedstoarrivebeforethe9:00AM/12:30PMstarttime,youshouldsignupforourExtendedCareprogramorstaywithyourchild.ItisOKtobe5minutesearly.Parentsareaskedtocometotheplaygroundgateorclassroomdoorforpick-up.Whenpickingupyourchildorcarpool,itisbettertobeearlyratherthanlate.ParentsareaskedtocallWCCNSat952-473-2114iftheyaregoingtobelateforpick-up.TheWCCNSParentOrganizationapprovedthefollowingpolicyonAugust27,2002regardingpick-up/departuretimes:Parentswhopickuptheirchildafter11:30AMor3:00PMwillbebilledasfollows:11:30-11:35AMor3:00-3:05PM-NoChargeAfter11:35AMor3:05PMuntilpickedupfromExtendedCare:Aminimumchargeof1houror$9.00/hourPersonsAuthorizedtoPickUpYourChildAttimeofenrollment,parentswillprovidethenamesofpersonsauthorizedtopickuptheirchild.Itistheparent’sresponsibilitytoinformWCCNSofanychangesinthenamesofpersonsauthorizedtotakeyourchildfromtheschool.Wewillreleasechildrentoauthorizedpersonsonly.ParentsMUSTnotifytheschoolbyphoneorinwritingifsomeoneotherthananauthorizedpersonwillpickupyourchild.Priortoyourchildbeingreleased,WCCNSstaffmayrequestphotoidentification.Remember,WCCNSparentsmustsigninchildrenwhentheybringthemtoschool.Also,pleaseindicateonthesign-informifyourchildisstayingforExtendedCareandprovideatelephonenumberwhereyoucanbereachedifitisdifferentfromthatontheemergencyform.Alsoprovideanyotherimportantnotesfortheday.WCCNSparentsmustsignchildrenoutatdeparturetime.Attimeofdeparture(11:30AMor3:00PM)allchildrenontheplaygroundmeettheirteachersataprearrangedplaceontheplayground.ExtendedCarestaffwillcheckinscheduledchildren.Remainingchildrenwaitwiththeirclassfortheirparentorcarpool.YoungerandoldersiblingsnotenrolledatWCCNSareaskedtowaitwiththeirparents.

HEALTH,ACCIDENT,SAFETY&EMERGENCYPOLICIES&PROCEDURESHealthCareSummaryParentsarerequiredtosubmitaChildHealthSummary,completedbythechild’s/family’shealthcareprovider.PerMinnesotaDepartmentofHumanServicesrequirements,thisHealthCareSummarymustbesubmittedwithin30dayspriortoadmissiontotheWCCNSprogramoryourchildmustbeexcludedfromattendingschool.ImmunizationsAllrequiredimmunizationsmustbeup-to-dateanddocumentedontheHealthCareSummary.WCCNSmusthaveonfileallrequireddocumentationoutliningyourchild’simmunizationrecordsonthefirstdayofschooloryourchildwillnotbeallowedtoattenduntiltherecordsarereceived.Writtendocumentationfromyourfamily’sphysicianorhealthcareproviderisrequiredpriortothefirstdayofschoolifyourchildisunderimmunizedduetospecifichealthconcerns.Asignedandnotarizeddocumentisrequiredpriortothefirstdayofschoolfromthosefamilieswhoareconscientiousobjectorswithregardtoimmunizations.WCCNScanprovideformsforcompletingthisdocumentation.IllChildGuidelinesCertainsymptomsinchildrenmaysuggestthepresenceofacommunicabledisease.ChildrenwhohavethefollowingsymptomswillbeexcludedfromWCCNSuntil(1)aphysicianhascertifiedthesymptomsarenotassociatedwithaninfectiousagentortheyarenolongerathreattothehealthofotherchildren/staff;or(2)thechildhasbeensymptomfreefor24hours.Foramildlyillchild,WCCNSdoesnothavethelicensingorstafftomeettheneedsoftheillchildandtheotherchildreninthegroup.ThereforeparentsMUSTmakeotherarrangementsfortheillchild.Symptomsinclude:• Fever-Axillaryororaltemperatureof100Forhigherorrectaltemperatureof101For
higher;especiallyifaccompaniedbyothersymptomssuchasvomiting,sorethroat,diarrhea,headacheandstiffneckorundiagnosedrash.Childmustbesymptomfreefor24hourspriortoreturningtoschool.
• Respiratory-Difficultorrapidbreathingorseverecoughing;childmakeshighpitchedcroupyorwhoopingsoundafters/hecoughs;orchildisunabletoliecomfortablyduetocontinuouscoughing.
• Diarrhea-Anincreasednumberofabnormallyloosestoolsintheprevious24hours.Observethechildforothersymptomssuchasfever,abdominalpainorvomiting.
• Vomiting-Twoormoreepisodesofvomitingwithintheprevious24hours.• Eye/Nose-Thickmucusorpusdrainingfromtheeyesornose.• SoreThroat-Sorethroat,especiallywithfeverorswollenglandsintheneck.• SkinProblems-Undiagnosedorcontagiousskinrash.Infectedsoreswithcrusty,yellowor
greendrainage,whichcannotbecoveredbyclothingorbandages.• Itching-Persistentitchingorscratchingofbodyorscalp.• Appearance/Behavior-Childlooksoractsdifferently,isunusuallytired,pale,lackingin
appetite,confused,irritable,and/ordifficulttoawaken.• UnusualColor-Eyesorskinareyellow(jaundice).Stoolisgrayorwhite.Urineisdarkor
teacolored.Thesesymptomscanbefoundinhepatitisandshouldbeevaluatedbyahealthcareprovider.

RetaliationProhibitedAnemployerofanymandatedreportershallnotretaliateagainstthemandatedreporterforreportsmadeingoodfaithofagainstachildwithrespecttowhomthereportismade.TheReportingofMaltreatmentofMinorsActcontainsspecificprovisionsregardingcivilactionsthatcanbeinitiatedbymandatedreporterswhobelievethatretaliationhasoccurred.InternalReviewWhenthelicensedfacilityhasreasontoknowthataninternalorexternalreportofallegedorsuspectedmaltreatmenthasbeenmade,thefacilitymustcompleteaninternalreviewandtakecorrectiveaction,ifnecessary,toprotectthehealthandsafetyofthechildreninattendance.Theinternalreviewmustincludeanevaluationofwhether:

AWCCNSadministratorandteacherfirstmeettodiscusstheirobservationsandwhatstrategieshavebeenimplementedatWCCNStoassistthechildwithdevelopmentaldelays,challengingbehaviors,emotionaldifficulties,orotherindicatorsofspecialneeds.Itisexpectedthatpriortothismeetingtheclassroomteacherswillhavediscussedobservationsandconcernswiththechild’sparentsandassessedtheparent’slevelofconcern.
2. If,aftereffortsbytheclassroomteacherstoassistwithchildwithbehavioral,emotional,
ordevelopmentaldelayshavenotbeensuccessful,andtheteachersoradministratorsdeterminetheneedsofthechildrequireadditionalassistance,theteacherand/oradministratorwillcontacttheearlychildhoodsocialworkerwithinthefamily’sschooldistricttodiscussanobservation.
3. Ifconversationswithschooldistrictpersonnelwarranttheneedforanobservation,the
schooldistrictwillobtainasignedconsentformfromthechild’sparents.
4. Upontheparent’ssignedconsent,avisitbyaschooldistrictsocialworkerwillbemadetothechild’sclassroom.Thesocialworkerwillshareresultsoftheobservationwiththefamily.Shouldthesocialworkerdeterminefurtherassessmentisrequired,thesocialworkerwillpresentthiscasetothestudyteamoftheschooldistrictforadditionalfeedback.
5. Iftheteamdeterminesadditionalevaluationisneeded,theywillrecommendthechild
receiveamorethoroughevaluationbytheschooldistrict’sspecialeducationteam.Thechild’sparentswillagainbeaskedtosignaconsentformbeforeanyevaluationproceeds.
6. Oncetheparentsprovideconsenttotheschooldistrict’sspecialeducationteamto
evaluatetheirchild,thecaseisthenplacedontheIEP(IndividualizedEducationPlan)timeline.Theschooldistrictwillpresentitsfindingstotheparents.Iftheparentsconsent,WCCNSwillbeallowedtobepresentatthesummarymeetingswiththeschooldistrictteamtolearnaboutthefindingsandrecommendations.

Dependingonthefindingsoftheschooldistrictteam,andwiththeconsentofthechild’sparents,WCCNSmaybeaskedtoimplementstrategiesthatarewithinthescopeofWCCNS’abilitytoperform.Basedonthosefindings,theschooldistrictmayrecommendanotherschoolenvironmentequippedwithspecialistsandphysicalsurroundingsthatcanaddressthechild’sspecificneeds.TheschooldistrictandWCCNSwillassistthefamilywiththistransition.TheseproceduresfollowguidelinesoutlinedwithinthePupilFairDismissalAct(PFDA)–shortnameforMinnesotaStatues121A.40through121A.56governingdiscipline/dismissals/suspensions/expulsions,throughtheMinnesotaDepartmentofEducation.
