Welcome to the University of Geneva's InternationalOrganizations MBA (IOMBA). It is the only MBAprogram in the world specifically designed to addressthe demand for managers with the business skillsand knowledge to help international organizations tomeet global challenges. Our students arrive from allover the globe with a passion to change the world,and leave with the tools to make it happen.
As a one-year intensive MBA, located in the heart ofUnited Nations organizations and other internationalinstitutions, it is taught by University of Genevaprofessors, leading practitioners, and an internationalfaculty from leading universities around the world.The IOMBA exposes students to the latest theoreticaland applied knowledge combined with advancedmanagement training. This multidisciplinarycurriculum was developed in consultation withrenowned scholars, high level officials frominternational and non-governmental organizations
and business executives.
Through ongoing engagement with internationaland nongovernmental organizations, and apracticum as the culmination of the program,students are given the opportunity to apply theseskills directly in relevant professional settings. What are the Objectives of the IOMBA ?
The IOMBA was built from the ground up as amultidisciplinary approach to the management ofinternational institutions, and the course curriculum is
addresses the core issues that these institutions face.Our curriculum will enable you to learn about :
Advanced management tools and practices forintergovernmental, public and non-profitorganizations.
Organizational and governance models.
Management consulting within the highlyspecialized realm of international development.
Fundamental concepts of change management incomplex organizations.
Risk analysis and decision-making mechanismsspecific to international institutions.
How to apply project management tools in aninternational development context.
Managing a team in a high-pressure, multiculturalenvironment.
Negotiation and communication in an internationalenvironment.
Teaching Method
The program is a mixture of lectures, case studies, andpractical assignments and taught by internationallyrecognized scholars and practitioners. Studentperformance is evaluated in each course module on thebasis of individual and group assignments, presentations,and examinations.
Group learning is central to the program, and students areplaced in small groups for each of the two classsemesters. These groups, which are given no officialinternal hierarchy and are built with a balance ofacademic, professional, and cultural backgrounds in mind,are one of the key sources of learning during the course ofIOMBA. The experience requires that students learn how
to manage complex group dynamics, solve disputes, andallocate group resources, all while completing their workunder intense time pressure.

Management DevelopmentCertificate
The Management Development Certificate (MDC) isa part-time course created to respond to the needsof professionals and practitioners working part orfull time in International Organizations. The MDCallows participants to develop their technical,leadership and managerial skills in the context ofinternational organizations, and extend theirknowledge of the socio-economic and political
context in which they work.The MDC can be completed over one to twoacademic years, through a flexible and accessibleschedule.
To complete the MDC,participants must attend sixcourses of their choice from the twenty-four offeredin the IOMBA (see list of courses in the previoussections of this brochure).
The MDC is delivered in a modular structure,allowing participants to plan their classes inadvance, around their work schedule.
Potential applicants are professionals currently
working in an international organization, non-governmental organization, or multinationalcompany who aspire to a managerial position, orexisting managers who wish to enhance their skillswith a view to taking on greater responsibility intheir own organization.
The IOMBA Program on a Part TimeBasis
Part time students can choose to attend the IOMBAProgram in two, three or four academic years,organizing their academic workload consistentlywith their interests and work schedule.
MDC graduates who want to continue theiracademic path towards the IOMBA may do sothrough the regular application process and attendon a part time basis. The six modules of the MDCwill be counted toward the IOMBA and the feeproportionally deducted.
Executive MBA Specialization inInternational Organizations
Professionals and managers who are interested in amore traditional Executive MBA Program but who donot wish to give up the opportunity to learn moreabout International Organizations and theirenvironment can choose this option.
The Executive MBA, taught entirely in English, is atwo to three year program conducted duringweekends (lectures are normally held every other
weekend on Friday evenings and Saturday). Duringthe first year, participants undertake both the basicand quantitative subjects of the MBA Program in a12-course curriculum, while in the second year theyspecialize in their field of interest.
Students interested in the internationalorganizations environment may choose six coursesfrom the curriculum in international managementand six from the IOMBA curriculum.

IOMBA Career Services delivers personalized, tailor-made assistance to each IOMBA student throughperiodic one-on-one meetings that take placethroughout the 10-month academic portion of theprogram in order to provide the guidance, tools andresources for students to conduct a thorough searchof practicums and employment opportunities in theirchosen sector. Cultivating social networks anddeveloping contacts with international organizations
and NGOs further help students. Additionally, careertopics are integrated into the regular IOMBAcurriculum and include an overview of theInternational Organization (IO) field, clarification ofcareer direction and effective communication skills.However, the ultimate responsibility of finding apracticum lies with the student.

The IOMBA Program requires a three month practicum
after completion of the academic requirements in June.This practicum accounts for 20% of the final grade,provides an opportunity for students to gain valuablework experience applying their theoretical knowledge,and developing further their professional networks.
Practicums are an invaluable entry into theinternational organizations system potentially leadingto full-time employment. However, the majority of UNpracticums are unpaid, competitive and often internscannot be hired directly into a job upon completion of apracticum. Students should therefore begin to target
their preferred practicum early on during the academicprogram and come prepared to cover the costs of theirliving expenses during their practicum period. Should astudent go straight into a job following the academicprogram, they can use the first three months on the jobto prepare a detailed practicum report thatdemonstrates the integration of theory into practice.
Alumni Network
The IOMBA Alumni Networks 200+ members are fastbuilding a presence in international organizations as
well as the private sector.The Alumni Network worksthrough web-based, on-line social network facilities,events and information exchanges to introduce thenew IOMBA students into the organizations andcompanies where IOMBA graduates work. The AlumniNetwork often circulates vacancies ahead of the formalrecruitment process, and helps with introductions.

ALLAN PierreProfessor Pierre Allan is Professor of Political Scienceat the University of Geneva (since 1984.) Afterstudying at the University of Lausanne (M.Sc. inEconomics and M.A. in Sociology), he obtained his PhDat the Graduate Institute of International Studies inGeneva. He has been visiting professor in Berkeley,Berlin, Grenoble, Paris, Prague, Stanford, Zurich,amongst others. He has published a number ofarticles and books, the most recent of which isentitled What is a Just Peace? (Oxford UniversityPress, 2008, co-edited with Alexis Keller). His currentresearch is on Unjust and Just Peace as well as on
the concept of Global Care.ANDERSON GillianGillian L. Anderson is an international strategy andperformance consultant with considerable experienceworking with leading multilateral organizations,NGOs, start-up enterprises and private sector multi-nationals in Europe, North America, the Middle East,Asia and Africa. Ms. Anderson's work has had anotable impact on the effectiveness of theinternational aid system, including: the restoration offood security in post-war Iraq; ensuring UN systemreadiness in the event of a global pandemic;enhancing donor capacity to stimulate FAO reform;
improving WFP's ability to manage risk in complexcontexts such as Somalia; and defining the strategiesdeployed by IDLO to utilize the law to achievedevelopment outcomes. Prior to operating as an
independent consultant, Ms. Anderson worked forBain & Company, the Bridgespan Group and was apartner with a small international consultancy firm.Ms. Anderson holds a Masters in Management,Economics & International Relations from theUniversity of St. Andrews in Scotland.
BIAGI FredericoDr. Federico Biagi holds a Ph.D in Economics from theUniversity of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada andis Associate Professor in Public Economics at theUniversity of Padova, Italy. His research interests
include investment behaviour, innovation and growth,policies for innovation, industrial and fiscal policy,regulation and antitrust.
CASCIO WayneProfessor Wayne F. Cascio holds the Robert H.Reynolds Chair in Global Leadership at the Universityof Colorado Denver. He has served as president of theSociety for Industrial and Organizational Psychology(1992-1993), Chair of the SHRM Foundation (2007), theHR Division of the Academy of Management (1984),and as a member of the Academy of ManagementsBoard of Governors (2003-2006). He has authored oredited 24 books on human resource management,
and is a two-time winner of the best-paper awardfrom theAcademy of Management Executive for hisresearch on downsizing and responsible restructuring.

Geographically and professionally, the IOMBA faculty is as broad-based as the program itself. He received an honorary doctorate from theUniversity of Geneva (Switzerland) in 2004, and in2008 he was named by theJournal of Managementasone of the most influential scholars in management
in the past 25 years. Currently he serves as a senioreditor of theJournal of World Business.
DEBRUN XavierDr. Xavier Debrun holds a Ph.D. in InternationalEconomics from the Graduate Institute in Geneva.After a post-doctoral fellowship in the Department ofEconomics at Harvard, he joined the InternationalMonetary Fund (IMF) in 2000, working mostly in theFiscal Affairs Department, where he is currently theDeputy Head for fiscal policy,and the ResearchDepartment, where he contributed to the WorldEconomic Outlook. In 2006-07, he was a VisitingFellow at BruegelBrussels leading think tank on
European issuesand a Visiting Professor ofEconomics at the Graduate Institute and theUniversity of Geneva. He has been teaching theinternational economics course at IOMBA since 2006.Dr. Debruns research interests include internationalpolicy coordination, the economics of monetaryunions, and macro-fiscal issues, including the designand effectiveness of fiscal policy rules, and thestabilizing (or destabilizing) role of fiscal policy. Hiswork has been published in leading professional
journals, including the Economic Journal, theEuropean Economic Review, and Economic Policy.
DROR Iddo
Dr. Iddo Dror has experience in various sectors (bothfor-profit and not-for-profit) in assignments spanningfive continents. His professional interests spandevelopment (particularly the role of financialservices therein), international business andmanagement, and graduate level teaching. He holds aPhD in Economic and Social Sciences and a Masters ofBusiness Administration from the University ofGeneva, Switzerland. FRAGNIERE EmmanuelEmmanuel Fragnire, CIA (Certified Internal Auditor),is a Professor of Service Management at the Hautecole de Gestion of Geneva, Switzerland. He is also a
Lecturer in Enterprise Risk Management at theManagement School of the University of Bath, UK.Previously, he was a Commodity Risk Analyst atCargill (Ocean Transportation) and a Senior InternalAuditor at Banque Cantonale Vaudoise, the fourthlargest bank in Switzerland. His research is focused onthe development of risk management models fordecision-makers in the service sector. He haspublished several papers in academic journals such asAnnals of Operations Research, EnvironmentalModeling and Assessment, Interfaces, andManagement Science. He is the author (with Sullivan)of the book entitled Risk Management:SafeguardingCompany Assets, Fifty-Minute Crisp Series,

HARTIGAN PamelaDr Pamela Hartigan has been the Director of the SkollCentre for Social Entrepreneurship since 2009. She isalso founding partner of Volans Ventures, anorganization launched in 2008 focused on building
innovative scalable solutions to challenges affectingour future. Prior to starting Volans, Dr Hartigan wasthe first Managing Director of the Schwab Foundationfor Social Entrepreneurship (2000-2008), and was alsoon the World Economic Forum Managing Board.Throughout her career, she has held leadershippositions in multilateral health organizations,educational institutions and entrepreneurial non-profits. She is currently a Trustee or on the Board ofAdvisors of several social enterprises:Bamboo Finance(Geneva), CAMBIA (Australia), INDEX (Denmark), GEXSI(Germany), Lex Mundi Pro Bono Foundation (USA),Ventures in Development (China),Waste Ventures(India) and The Story Museum (UK). She holds
Masters' degrees in Economics and Public Health anda PhD in Cognitive Psychology (GeorgetownUniversity, Washington DC). Dr Hartigan is a frequentlecturer on social entrepreneurship and innovation atgraduate schools of business in the USA, Europe andAsia, and is an Adjunct Professor at the ColumbiaBusiness School.
HOESLI MartinMartin Hoesli is a professor of real estate investmentsat the University of Geneva (Geneva Finance ResearchInstitute and Swiss Finance Institute) and a professorof finance at the University of Aberdeen (BusinessSchool). He is a former president of the European RealEstate Society (ERES), a Fellow of the Royal Institutionof Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and of the WeimerSchool of Advanced Studies in Real Estate and LandEconomics, and an academic fellow of the Urban LandInstitute (ULI). He has been a visiting professor atseveral European, U.S. and New Zealand universities.He has published six books and over 80 scholarlyarticles on real estate. He is a board member of theSwiss Financial Analysts Association (SFAA) and of theEuropean Real Estate Society (ERES).
ILES KarenKaren Iles is an independent consultant. Her work
includes organisational change and learning; programdesign and appraisal; client based and demand-ledservice delivery, livelihoods approaches; participatorysurvey, monitoring and impact assessment methods;evidence policy making and role of projects;institutional reform for livestock service delivery; andgender issues. Ms. Iles works with organisations indesigning learning processes at a strategic level thatsupport both the organisation and individuals to putnew concepts, ideas and policies into practice. Shesupports teams to find creative ways to derive lessonsfrom their work and integrate these into their changeand organisation learning processes includingthrough interactive learning materials, seminars and
workshops, and toolkits/ guidance notes. Karen Ilesholds an M.Sc. in Tropical Animal Production andHealth from the University of Edinburgh, UK, and iscurrently undertaking doctoral studies (Ed.D.) at theUniversity of Bristol.
JENKS BruceDr. Bruce Jenks is a senior non-resident fellow atHarvard University Kennedy School of Governmentand currently lectures at the Geneva GraduateInstitute of International and Development Studies
and at the Columbia University School ofInternational and Public Affairs. Dr. Jenks served asAssistant Secretary General at the United NationsDevelopment Program until 2010. For ten years he wasresponsible for UNDPs resource mobilization, and forrelations with the Executive Board, donors, UN agencypartners, the World Bank, OECD/DAC, the privatesector and civil society. He exercised overallcoordination of UNDPs mandate to provide systemwide leadership on the Millennium DevelopmentGoals (2002-04). He led major change processes andthe introduction of results based management inUNDP. The Secretary General appointed him as thefirst Director of the UN Office in Brussels. Dr Jenks
also served as member of the OECD/DAC ReflectionGroup charged with making recommendations on thefuture of the OECD/DAC. He had oversight of theExecutive Secretariat to the Private SectorCommission launched by the Secretary General andco-chaired by Ernesto Zedillo and Paul Martin. MORARD BernardProfessor Bernard Morard has been the Dean of theFaculty of Economic and Social Sciences at theUniversity of Geneva since 2007. He holds a Ph.D. inManagement and a State Doctorate from theUniversity of Aix Marseille III. His research andpublications relate to the fields of analyticalaccounting, management control and finance.

Dr. Drazen Petrovic is the Principal Legal Officer in theOffice of the Legal Adviser of the International LabourOffice in Geneva. He has rich experience with variousinternational organizations belonging to the UNsystem. He holds a Ph.D. in international public lawfrom the University of Geneva, LL.M from theEuropean University Institute, Florence and theUniversity of Belgrade, and LL.B. from SarajevoUniversity Law School. SCHNEIDER SusanSusan C. Schneider is Professor of Human ResourceManagement at HEC Genve of the University ofGeneva. Professor Schneiders teaching and researchactivities focus on intercultural management,
diversity and corporate social responsibility. Her book(written with Jean Louis Barsoux) is entitledManaging Across Cultures (1997, 2nd edition 2003Pearson Financial Times) and has been translated intoChinese, French and Dutch. Professor Schneider iscurrently visiting professor at NOVA University, Schoolof Business and Economics in Lisbon, Portugal. Shewas on the faculty of INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France(1985-1995), and has taught at ESSEC (France), PaceUniversity, and New York University Graduate Schoolsof Business (Stern) in New York City (USA). Your response to the essay questions helps us evaluate your
career aspirations and how those objectives match with theunique qualities of the IOMBA program. We encourage youto give considerable thought in the writing of your essays.Additionally, we ask that you limit your responses to thelength that has been indicated.
Statement of Financial Resources
This form must be completed by all applicants. The purposeof this form is to indicate how you intend to finance yourstudies and to inform us if you are applying for ascholarship.
Scholarships are based on a combination of academic merit,financial need, and availability of funds. Additionally, somescholarships may be reserved for nationals of selected
developing countries. All applicants who apply by our stage1 admissions deadline, 13 November 2011 may be consideredfor a scholarship. Applicants will be notified if they havebeen awarded a scholarship upon acceptance to theprogram.
Fees
A quality MBA education represents a significantinvestment of time, effort and money, both on the part ofthe school and that of the student. HEC Genve and theUniversity of Geneva contribute to make this investmentaffordable through our comparatively low tuition fees andthrough direct support in the form of scholarships.

The United Nations University (UNU) Fellowship
The University of Geneva and UNU share a strong commitmentto enhancing the capacity of individuals and institutions indeveloping countries. To demonstrate its commitment to theUNU's development focus, the University of Geneva is offeringone UNU fellowship - which covers full tuition - to a qualifiedcandidate from the 2012/2013 IOMBA class.
IOMBA Merit Scholarships
The IOMBA also offers several partial scholarships to outstandingstudents who did not qualify for the UNU Fellowship. Thesescholarships are limited in number and are offered only to themost competitive candidates.

Swiss Government Scholarships
Swiss Government Scholarships are awarded by theFederal Commission for Scholarships for ForeignStudents (FCS).They are by definition intendedexclusively for foreign students who wish to completetheir education at a Swiss university or federalinstitute of technology,such as the University ofGeneva.The Scholarships are awarded in accordancewith a list of countries eligible for Swiss Federal
Scholarships. Applications should be submitted to theSwiss diplomatic representation in the candidate'scountry of origin.
Scholarships are granted for an academic year of ninemonths. An extension may be granted if thescholarship is needed to finance an educationalprogram lasting more than two semesters, and only ifthe recipient of the scholarship has successfullypassed the first year of study.

Double Degree IOMBA/CLAPI-LS
The IOMBA /MPM Double degree is a four semesterprogram, allowing students to choose between twopossible tracks depending on preference for healthcareand public service management or the development ofquantitative and analytical skills for management andpublic policy. The IOMBA/CLAPI-LS allows younggraduates from Italy and elsewhere to be awarded boththe IOMBA and the Italian graduate degree, LaureaSpecialistica in economics and public administration. It is
five semester program with the first year at theUniversity of Bocconi and the second year at theUniversity of Geneva.The last semester is given to thepracticum and final thesis requirements.
Georgetown University -Georgetown Public Policy Institute(GPPI)
Double Degree IOMBA /Master in Public Policy (MPP)
The MPP is the flagship degree at GPPI. It combines a
rigorous set of analytical and quantitative core courseswith a required concentration in a specific policy sector(e.g., international development, health policy,environmental and regulatory policy). GPPI is home tofour nationally known research centres in the areas ofhealth care, childrens issues, non-profit studies anddemocratic governance. Its location in Washington offersexcellent opportunities for interaction with leading thinktanks, international financial institutions, governmentagencies and NGOs.In the course of five intense semesters (28 months),students earn both the IOMBA and the MPP and it

The theme for the 2011 GFSC was:Social Media:Bridging the Gap, Creating Impact. The choiceproved prescient as the unfolding events in theMiddle East highlighted the relevance of the
theme. An interactive formula which mixed keynote presentations with practitioners' workshopsencouraged active participation and created aplatform for the exchange of views,withrepresentatives of international and non-governmental organizations' taking part. . The Faculty of Economic andSocial Sciences
