President’sReport Winterisuponus-atimeforreflectionontheseasonpastandanticipationoftheseasontocome,and,ofcourse,forreplenishingtheflybox!Sincemylastreport,themainclubactivityhasbeentheannualTigerHuttyingsessionsinMay.Onceagainthesewerehighlysuccessfulwithparticipantssharing,learninganddiscussingmanyaspectsoffly-tyingandfishing,and,ofcourse,enjoyinggreatcompanionship,foodandwine-ManythankstoCubbyfororganisingtheeventandtoallwhoattended.Onthefairlyclosehorizonisourannualdinnerand,atthetimeofwritingthisreport,itlooksasthoughthedinnerwill,asusual,bewellattendedandaveryenjoyableandconvivialgathering.InearlyAugustwewillholdourAGM,whichIexpectwillbewellattendedasusual.Again,Iurgeyoutoseriouslyconsidernominatingforcommitteepositions.Ithinkthatallmembershaveanobligation,atsomestage,toparticipatemorefullyinclubactivitiesandfunctioningbeyondsimplybeingamemberandattendingafewactivities.Committeeinvolvementisonewaytoachievethisandisalsoagreatwaytogettoknowtheworkingsoftheclubandothermembers.Pleasegiveitsomethought!FinallyastheclubyeardrawstoacloseandthenewseasonapproachesIwouldliketothankandcongratulateallmemberswhohaveparticipatedinclubactivities,andinparticularmyfellowcommitteememberswhosesupport,effortsandenthusiasmhavecontributedhugelytowhatIbelievehasbeenaverysuccessfulyear.

EditorialWinterisagreatflytyingtimeandtheclubhashadtwomajoreventsthatwereveryvaluabletimes.ThefirsteventwastheinfamousTigerHutWeekend,whichisoneofthemarqueeeventsintheactivitycalendar.ItisagreatweekendthatrunslikeatopduetotheeffortsofLyndonCubbinsandthePresidentwhoshouldbothbecongratulatedfortheirwork.ThesecondtyingeventwasorganisedbySteveButlerandothersandwasheldattheLenahValleyRSLClub.Itwasafantasticdayandthevenuewasreallygood.Thearticleaboutthedayfocusesonjustsomeofthewonderfulfliesthatweretiedontheday.(PleasenotethatItookthephotosofallfliesinthisedition,wellbeforetheexcellentpresentationbyBradHarrisatourJulymeeting!)Thefinalstoryinthiseditionisinresponsetopersistentrumoursthatthiscomingseasonmightseethere-openingofLakeSorellalbeitforalimitedtime.FortisreasonIdecidedtogetinfirstbeforealltheothermagazineshavetheirsay!ManythankstoNoelWilson,TonyAbelandparticularlyTonyDellandBrianMcCullaghwhowereallveryhelpfulandgenerouswiththeirtimeandknowledgeinregardstothebestwaystofishthisamazinglake.Ifthestoriesfromthepastareanythingtogobyitshouldbeafantasticadditiontoourfly-fishingdestinations.

Iamoffonabigtripinourvanonthemainlandforafewmonthsandmightbeluckyenoughtogetinsomesalt-waterflyfishing.Weareheadingupthecentre,overtoBroome,downthewestcoastofWAandbackacrosstheNullarbor.TheseasoninTasmaniawillbewellunderwaybythetimewegetbackattheendofOctobersoenjoytheopeningofthenewseason!

TigerHut2018Once again the TigerHutwas the place to be in thedepthsofwinter.TheweatherwascoldbutclearandtheHutwaswarmandinvitingasusual.Thiswasthesession known as the ‘Retirees’ or “Old Farts’weekend and ran on from the normal Tiger Hutweekend on Friday through to Sunday. LyndonCubbins, who always does a brilliant job on thisregularevent,ranthefirstsession.PresidentAndrewhoodwas thecoordinatorof thenextsession.Youngand old met for a barbecue lunch on the Sundaybeforethosewithworkcommitmentsshuffledoffandthosewithoutshuffledin.
Asistraditionalattheseweekendsthetyingisalwaysat the forefront with many different flies being tiedthroughout the two days. Sharing of advice,techniquesandpatternsnewandold isthegenerallythemainidea.
Theothermainfeatureofthetripistheconsumptionof fine wine and fine food. Casseroles on the firstnightandthensomewonderfulroastsonthesecondcourtesy of Ashley Artis’ magnificent stainless steelspitroast.
ThebonusofcomingonthesecondpartofthetripisthatAndrewHoodmightbringalongsomeofhiswineandsuggestthatyoumightenjoyaglass–whichyoudefinitelywill!
NoelWilsonwas good enough to share some of theflies he used to use in Lake Sorell and these arepictured above. They are all galaxia imitations apartfromthenymphpictured.Thisrelateswelltothefinalstoryinthisedition.ThanksNoel!

LakeSorellRevisited–Perhaps…
AtthetimeofwritingthereseemstobeaverygoodchancethatLakeSorellwillreopeninthecomingseasonalbeitforalimitedtime.BothLakeSorellandLakeCrescentwereclosedtofishingbytheIFSin1995followingthediscoveryofcarp.LakeCrescentwasdeclaredcarp-freeandreopenedin2004howeverSorellremainedclosedduetoanumberofsuccessfulspawnings.CurrentlytheIFSbelievetheyareontracktoridSorellofcarpcompletelyandiftheycanitisanamazingachievement!
LakeSorellishometoanativefishknownasaGoldenGalaxiaandthiswasafavouritefoodforthetrout.Theyinhabittherockyshores,outcropsandreefsthatdotthelake–oftenhidinginthecrevicesandshelteredarea
ArecentphotofromtheIFSsuggeststhatthesegalaxiaarestilloneofthemajorfoodsourcesforthetroutinSorell.
IfishedLakeSorellanumberoftimesattheverybeginningofmyflyfishingadventurebutdidsoinamannerthatcouldbestbedescribedas‘verypoor’soIthoughtitwasanopportunetimetotalktosomeofourmoreexperiencedmemberstogetthelowdownonthelake,theflies,thegoodspotsandmoreimportantlytheever-presentrisksofboatingonthislake.AfteraskingaroundIwaspointedinthedirectionofBrianMcCullaghandTonyDellwhoweregenerousenoughtogivemesometimetotalkaboutthelaketheylovedsomuch.Followingismyattempttosummarisetheirwide-rangingdescriptionsandanecdotes…
Macca(picturedontherightintheamazinghat)firstfisheditin1958andDelly(middle)in1955.Theyrecalledthat‘gentlemen’intheLodgefishedinplus-fourstiesandtweedhats.Maccaandhismatewould‘borrow’rodswithsilklinesandtrythemoutwhilethegentlemenwereintheLodgehavingtheirluncheon.Theywouldoftencomeouttofindtheirleadersinamuchworsestatethantheyremembered!AlthoughtheyoungMaccawaskeentolearnhowtocastthegentlemenwouldnothelpatall.Itwasanexclusivesportandexclusionwasthenameofthegame!

Therewasalwaysabitoftensionbetweentheflyfishersandthetrollersonthelake–anditwascommonpracticetomoveinonareasthatwerefishingwell.Maccawassometimesknowntotakeoutanumberofwhitesaucebottleswithrockstiedtoastringanddropthemrandomlytomarkfictitiousreefs.Thiswouldkeepthetrollersoutoftheareashewantedtofish!
TonyDellwithabraceofSorelltroutMostmembersonlyusedtheirboatstogetouttoafavouredspottogetoutandwade.Whentheydidfishfromtheboattheywouldtakeitinturnsrowingalongtherockyshorelines.Onerowedandtheotherfishedandthenswappedover.Thisiswherethe‘rockyshores’legendbeganandalthoughothersthoughttheywerebeingcageyitwaswherethefishactuallywere!Thefishdidn’tusuallygonearthemoremuddyareas.WheretofishTherearelotsofrockyshoresandreefsandthesearemarkedonthemapingreen.ThemapwillbeleftupintheSorellshacksoifyougotherecheckitoutandfeelfreetoannotateitmore!Someofthebestareasinclude:
• StGeorgesIslandandthereefsjustoffit,• BlowflyandMaggot,• DuckBaydowntoReliableandtheHatchery
shore.
Thesewereallveryproductiveareas.Thekeywastomoortheboatandgetoutandwalkcarefully
DellyandMaccaneverreallywentoutinthemiddleofthelakebecausetheydidn’thavesinkinglines.Theywouldusuallyleavetheshackat9.00amandgetbackatabout10.00pm.Abigdaybyanymeasure!TheFliesTheFliestheyusedwereprettysimple.Itwasbeforeyoucouldfish3fliesandtherewerenotungstenbeads.Togettheflytosinktheyputleadinthebody–alwayswitharedthreadheadonitbutmostlytheflieswereunweightedbecauseitwasbetteriftheysunkslowly.ThegreenBeadyarnsoakedupthewaterandwasquiteheavy.Thishasagreatglintaboutitandthismadeiteffectivewhenfishwerefeedingonsnails.SeeDellyformoreinformationhere.
ThetwomostsuccessfulfliesweretheBloodyMaryandtheGreenRabbitYeti.InstructionsonhowtotieandfishthesefliesareinthefirsteditionofAustralia’sBestTroutFliesinMacca’spart.Itiswellworthreading!

TheBloodyMary(topleft)wasparticularlygoodforthemarshes.Thetrickwastofishitasasingleflyonlyandletitsititinaholeintheweedandwaitforthefishtomove.Youcouldseethedisturbanceastheymovedthroughthepennyweed.Youwouldtrytoleadthembyametreandahalf.TheBloodyMarywouldsinkslowlyandwhenyourlinemovedyou’dstrikeandhangon!Thiswasallonsimplefloatinglinesastherewerenosinkinglines.A6½lb9footleaderwasthebasicsetup.TheGreenRabbitYeti,whichisalsointhebook,wasanothergo-tofly.Thiswasagainoftenfishedunweightedandwaslefttowasharoundinthewaves.Itwasfishedonthepointwithasimplebrownnymphonthetopdropper.TheMonstrosity,whichwasbasicallylotsofdifferentcolouredolivemarabou,wasanothergoodfly–themodernversionofthisflyisthePulsar.Atthetimethatthiswaswrittentherewasnoinformationaboutexactlywhenorevenifthelakewouldre-open–justaconsistenttrickleofrumoursfrompeoplewhoseemedtobeintheknow.SoIaskedwhenandwhereMaccaandDellywouldgonowifSorellweretoopen.Thesearesomeoftheirhints…

OnasafetynoteitisimportantfornewcomerstorealisethedangersofboatingonLakeSorell.Thelakeislargeandveryshallowwithsomebrutalrocksjustwaitingtosmashupmotorsandboats.The5-knotspeedlimitisveryimportantandmayevenbeabitfastattimes.Thelakeisparticularlydifficultinbignortherliesandnor-westerlywindsandpeoplewouldoftenpulltheirboatsupontheshoreandwalkbacktotheshackuntilitblewover!
Inparticularthereisabitknownas‘thewashingmachine’(Markedinblue)wherethereisalotofconfusedwaterandbackwashfromthereefs.Therehavebeensomedrowningshereasthewavesstandupveryhighandveryclosetogethersobeawareofthis!Thekeyistoexercisecautionatalltimes.
TheClubShackatLakeSorellisafantasticlittleplaceandwillnodoubtreceivemuchmorepatronageduringthereopeningtimes.Iwillincludesomephotosandsomeintroductorytipsforstayingthereinthenextissue.
