THE COMMUNITYFinneytownisahard-workingcommunityof12,800residentsthatvaluesfamilies,education,civic-mindedness,serviceandpersonalconnection.ItislocateddirectlynorthoftheCityofCincinnati,borderedbyWyomingandNorthCollegeHill,andisthelargestneighborhoodinSpringfieldTownship.FinneytownisaplacewherecrowdsturnoutfortheannualHomecomingParade,residentscheckinonelderlyneighborsandcommunitymembershavepassedeveryschooloperatinglevyputbeforethemforthelast40years–onthefirstballot.

THE SCHOOL DISTRICTWith1,463students,theFinneytownLocalSchoolDistrictislargeenoughtoofferrichopportunitiesinacademics,fineartsandextracurricularsandsmallenoughtohavethefeelofanextendedfamily.Itiscomprisedofthreeschools:BrentElementary,gradesK-2;WhitakerElementary,grades3-6;andFinneytownSecondaryCampus,grades7-12.
Apointofprideisthatthedistrictoffersstudentsandstaffthechancetolearnandworkinschoolswithanevenracialbalance,whichhasheldsteadyoverthelastfiveyears.
Thedistricthasa91%four-yeargraduationrate,96%attendancerateand15%mobilityrate.Per-pupilspendingis$10,527.Thecommunityhasthethird-highestvotedmillageinHamiltonCounty,anindicationoftheconfidenceresidentsplaceinthefiscalmanagementofthedistrict.
Numbers,however,tellonlypartoftheFinneytownstory.Inclusionisathreadthatrunsthroughtheschooldistrict.Studentswithspecialneedsnotonlyreceivespeech,language,physicalandoccupationaltherapy,they’reelectedhomecomingqueen,arecheerleadersandhavemajorrolesinartsperformances.OnWorldCultureDay,thedistrictcelebratesstudentswhocomefrom15differenthomelands.
Thehighschoolissmallenoughtoofferstudentsmultipleopportunitiesforleadershipandinvolvement–it’snotunusualtoseeafootballplayerspendhalf-timeplayinginthemarchingband,forexample–butambitiousenoughtooffer15AdvancedPlacementcoursesinwhich42percentofhighschoolstudentsareenrolled.Studentscansignupforartglass,RockandRollAcademy,mediaanddesignanddigitalelectronics.
Inthe1980s,Finneytownwasatrailblazerinservicelearningandthedistrictonwhichmanyotherschoolsmodeledtheirprograms.Theimportanceofserviceisstillinthedistrict’sDNA,fromelementarystudentswhopayforHonorFlightsformilitaryveteranstoWildcatSERVE,thePTAoutreachthatdevotesroughly$7,000annuallytofood,clothingandsupportforupto40familieswithneeds.
Andthequestforhigherachievementgoeson.Thedistrictwilladdall-daykindergartenin2016-17,isincreasingtherigorofitsmiddle-schoolcurriculum,andwilloffermorethan50opportunitiesforprofessionaldevelopment.
