Fire DNF, Fire HSEFNFPA standards
Introduction to the NFPAThe National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is an international, non-profit organisation of fire safety professionals. The NFPA headquarters is located in the USA.
The organisation creates and maintains minimum acceptable standards and requirements for fire prevention and suppression activities, training, equipment and other life-safety codes and standards.
NFPA standards are typically revised every three years in order to keep guidelines updated and to prevent the loss of life and property due to fire.
See the NFPA homepage: www.nfpa.org.
NFPA 20DNF and HSEF bare shaft pumps comply with the NFPA 20 Standard for the Installation of Stationary Fire Pumps for Fire Protection. The standard covers systems for commercial, industrial and private buildings.
The pumps have been tested and certified by FM Global to comply with the requirements of the NFPA 20. (FM is short for Factory Mutual.) Compliance with the requirements is indicated by the FM mark affixed to the pumps. See fig. 1.
Fig. 1 FM and NFPA 20 marks
Other NFPA standardsThese standards are also of relevance to the products described in this data booklet:
• NFPA 13. Installation of sprinkler systems• NFPA 25. Standard for the inspection, testing and
maintenance of water-based fire protection systems• NFPA 70. National Electrical Code.
FM GlobalFM Global is a mutual commercial and industrial property insurance and risk management organisation, located in the USA with offices worldwide.
FM tests and approves industrial and commercial products in compliance with its own standards, or other nationally recognised requirements
The mark "FM APPROVED" indicates that the product complies with the required standards. See fig. 1.
See the FM homepage: www.fmglobal.com.
Standards approval processGrundfos tests the pumps and fills in the application forms for each individual pump size. We submit this documentation to the FM:
• Expected pump performance, including total head, power requirement and efficiency versus flow characteristics. If different impeller diameters are used to obtain the rated head for the pump to be examined, complete details must be provided concerning performance specifications to be evaluated.
• Calculations to determine shaft size, casing bolt size and anti-friction bearing life.
• General assembly drawings, a complete set of manufacturing drawings, materials lists and physical property specifications, expected marking format, brochures, sales literature, specification sheets, installation, operating and maintenance procedures.
When the application forms have been accepted, the FM will attend the final test at the Grundfos premises.
When the evaluation of the test results is positive, the FM will issue a certificate of compliance of the pump with the standards specified.
When a pump component is replaced after the certificate of compliance has been issued, representative samples of the pump may need to be re-tested.

NFPA standards Fire DNF, Fire HSEF
System designA fire system typically consists of three pumps: one pressure pump (jockey pump) and two fire pumps, one duty and the other acting as standby. Each of the fire pumps is capable of achieving the required performance.
Systems with only one fire pump with a redundant power supply or more than two fire pumps are, however, also seen.
OperationThe jockey pump maintains pressure in the system and compensates for any loss of pressure caused by leaks and thus prevents the duty pump from starting unnecessarily. The jockey pump has two pressure levels:
• a low pressure level to start the jockey pump • a high pressure level to stop the jockey pump.In case of further decrease of system pressure due to fire (i.e. sprinkler opens), the duty pump will start. In case this pump fails to start or breaks down, the standby pump will start.
The duty and standby pumps are not powered by the same source. This ensures that if one pump fails, for example due to fire damage, the other will operate. The pumps are controlled by pressure sensors.
Although individually designed for the specific installation, each fire unit must comply with NFPA standards.
Fire pumpsFM-approved Grundfos end-suction and split-case pumps are designed for the distribution of water in automatic sprinkler and standpipe systems. They are operated in case of fire and during tests.
MaterialsImpeller, wear rings, guide or diffusion vane rings, lantern rings, bottoms of stuffing boxes, interior nuts, linings of stuffing-box throats, glands, gland nuts and drain plugs are made of material approved by the FM and UL.
Performance requirementsFM-approved pumps comply with requirements concerning these features:
• flow rate vs. pressure• closed-valve pressure• motor power rating.
Flow rate vs. pressureThe approval/listing of the pump is based on a certain rated flow rate, indicated by the solid line in the curve charts. The pump must be able to supply not less than 150 % of the rated flow rate (broken line) and still be able to provide at least 65 % of the total rated pressure when operating at a suction lift of at least 4.6 m (15 ft) referred to water surface. See fig. 3 and the example below.
Fig. 3 Flow rate vs. pressure
ExampleThe pump complies with a flow requirement of 750 gpm (170 m3/h). At this flow rate, the pump delivers a pressure of 44 psi (31 mH). To be FM-approved or UL-listed, the pump must comply with these requirements:
At 150 % of the total rated flow rate, the pump delivers a pressure of 34 psi (24 metres head). This means that the pump complies with the requirements.

Closed-valve pressureThe closed-valve pressure must be at least 101 % and not higher than 140 % of the total rated pressure. See fig. 4 and the example below.
Fig. 4 Closed-valve pressure
ExampleThe curve shows a rated pressure of 44 psi (31 mH). To be FM-approved or UL-listed, the pump must comply with these requirements:
The pump has a closed-valve pressure of 53 psi (37 metres head). This means that the pump complies with the requirements.
Motor power ratingThe maximum motor current under any condition of pump load must not exceed the rated full-load current multiplied by the service factor, if any. Service factors must be in accordance with NEMA Standard MG-1.
To ensure that the motor is capable of operating the pump at any time, the NFPA demands that the manufacturer determines the maximum power required at a certain duty range. The maximum power occurs when there is no increase in power with an increase in the flow rate. See fig. 5 and the example below.
Fig. 5 Motor power rating
ExampleThe maximum power required for this pump is 25 kW.
If the motor service factor is 1, the minimum motor size required will be 25/1 = 25 kW.
If the motor service factor is 1.15, the minimum motor size required will be 25/1.15 = 21.7 kW.
Other system componentsElectric motorsGrundfos electric fire systems are typically equipped with MMG-E motors (sourced HEM EFF2 motors) manufactured according to IEC 60034. Other motor makes are available on request.
Insulation class: F.Enclosure class: IP55.
Note: NEMA motors are available on request.
Jockey pumpsGrundfos CR pumps are used as jockey pumps, maintaining the pressure. Under normal conditions, the jockey pump will be activated by the low-pressure switch as a result of small leakages, or if one or more sprinklers are activated.
The jockey pump is not subject to any specific NFPA requirements.
Control panelThe control panel has the CE-mark.
The control panel for the fire pumps must comply with NFPA 20 requirements. In addition, the cabinet must be listed by UL and ULC and approved by the FM and CSA.
The control panel is painted with RAL 3002 (red) and housed in a NEMA type-2 drip-proof enclosure.
The control panel is suitable for wall mounting or floor mounting. See Type keys, page 13.

Construction Fire DNF, Fire HSEF
Stuffing boxThe stuffing box is sealed with braided packing rings. The braided material ensures a long service life of packing rings and protects the pump shaft (sleeve). The packing rings are fitted symmetrically with parallel faces to prevent tilting. The packing ring joints are alternately staggered to aid sealing. Removal of the upper casing allows for ease of inspection and service of the stuffing box.
Packing ring materialsPTFE-impregnated fibre packing rings and EPDM O-rings in pump housing.
Barrier fluid• DNF: internal barrier fluid (fig. 16).• HSEF: external barrier fluid (fig. 17).
Fig. 16 Sectional view of uncooled stuffing box with internal barrier liquid for DNF pumps
Fig. 17 Sectional view of uncooled stuffing box with external barrier liquid for HSEF pumps
CouplingElectrically powered DNF and HSEF pumps are available with two types of coupling:
• standard • spacer (Fire DNF only).
Fig. 18 Standard coupling
Fig. 19 Spacer coupling
DNF pumps fitted with a spacer coupling can be serviced without removing the motor from the base plate and without removing the pump housing from the pipework. This saves realignment of pump and motor after service.
The split-case construction of HSEF pump enables removal and dismantling of the internal pump parts, e.g. bearings, wear rings, impeller and packing rings, without disturbing the motor or pipework.
ImpellerThe closed impeller made of bronze has double-curved blades with smooth surfaces for high efficiency.

The impellers are hydraulically balanced and dynamically balanced together with the shaft. See fig. 21. The hydraulic balancing compensates for axial thrust.
The direction of rotation of the impeller is clockwise when viewed from the motor.Note: HSEF pumps with counter-clockwise rotation are available on request.
The impellers are adapted to the duty point required by the customer by trimming the impeller.

Fire DNF, Fire HSEFOperating conditions
LocationThe pump set is designed for installation in a non-aggressive and non-explosive atmosphere.
The relative air humidity must not exceed 95 %.
Ambient temperature and altitudeThe ambient temperature must not exceed +40 °C (104 °F).
If the ambient temperature exceeds +40 °C (104 °F), or if the motor is installed more than 1000 metres (3280 ft) above sea level, the motor must not be fully loaded due to the low density and consequently low cooling effect of the air. In such cases, it may be necessary to use a motor with a higher output. See fig. 24.
Fig. 24 Relationship between motor output (P2) and ambient temperature/altitude
Inlet pressureMaximum inlet pressureThe inlet pressure is limited by the maximum operating pressure of the pump and the packing material.
Minimum inlet pressureRefer to the latest National Fire Protection Association pamphlet 20 (NFPA 20) for rules and exceptions.

Installation
PipingMake sure that the pump housing is not stressed by the pipework. Comply with the pump's maximum forces and moments allowed.
The suction and discharge pipes must be of an adequate size, taking the pump inlet pressure into account.
Refer to the rules and regulations of NFPA 20.
Install the pipes so that air locks are avoided, especially on the suction side of the pump. See fig. 25.
Fig. 25 Pipe sections
Fit isolating valves on either side of the pump to avoid having to drain the system if the pump needs to be cleaned or repaired.
Make sure the pipes are adequately supported as close to the pump as possible, both on the suction and on the discharge side. The counter-flanges should lie true against the pump flanges without being stressed; otherwise, the pump will be damaged.
Fig. 26 Example of piping, Fire DNF
AlignmentIn a complete pump unit assembled and supplied from factory, the coupling halves have been accurately aligned. Alignment is made by inserting shims under the pump and motor mounting surfaces, as required.
The pump/motor alignment may be affected during transport. Always check the alignment after the pump has been installed.
If misalignment has occurred due to radial or angular shifting, realign by inserting/removing shims under the supporting feet of the pump or the motor.
Take care to align carefully as this will increase the working life of the coupling, bearings and stuffing boxes.
Note: Check the final alignment when the pump has obtained its operating temperature under normal operating conditions.

The solid line represents the rated flow rate at which the pump has been FM-approved and UL-listed.
Pump type and rated pump speed
Size of impellerQH curve of the individual pump
The power curve indicates pump input power, P2, of the individual pump.
The eta curve indicates the pump efficiency of the individual pump.
The broken line repre-sents the maximum permissible flow rate at which the pump has been FM-approved or UL-listed.
Curve charts Fire DNF, Fire HSEF
GuideThe tables above the curve charts on the following pages show these data:
• FM-approved pressure range• Rated motor power, P2, within a specific pressure
range.
FM-approved pressure rangeExample: DNF 80-20, 500 gpm.
Curve conditions
Selection of pumpsThe guidelines below apply to the performance curves shown in the curve charts, pages 30 to 60.
• Tolerances according to ISO 9906, Annex A.• The curves show pump performance with different
impeller diameters at the rated speed.• The curves apply to the pumping of water at a tem-
perature of + 20 °C (68 °F) and a kinematic viscosity of 1 mm²/s (1 cSt).
Calculation of total headThe total pump head consists of the height difference between the measuring points + the differential head + the dynamic head.
Note: Selection of the pump is based on the head given by the customer.
Performance testsThe requested duty point of every pump is tested according to ISO 9906, Annex A. The curve of the performance test is supplied with the pump.
If the customer requires either more points on the curve to be checked or certain minimum performances or certificates, individual measurements must be made.

The digital display numerically displays:
• individual phase-to-phase incoming voltage and frequency
• individual phase motor current• true pump elapsed run time• pump start counts• time and date• cut-in and cut-out pressure settings• system pressure• minimum run period timer• sequential start timer• weekly test timer.
The digital display digitally indicates:
• phase loss• phase unbalance• incoming overvoltage• incoming undervoltage• motor overcurrent• motor undercurrent• motor run• fail to start.The LED’s on the panel indicates:
• power available• phase reversal• pump on demand• weekly test. The buttons on the display interface have these functions:
• alarm reset• cut-in pressure setting• cut-out pressure setting• run test• print.
Data recordingThe controller is equipped with a pressure and event recorder registering the following:
• time and date of retrieval of data• cut-in and cut-out settings• date of the last change of the cut-in and cut-out
settings• date, time and pressure readings of the minimum
and maximum pressure registered over the previous seven days
• weekly test information• minimum run period timer information• pump start time and date• pump stop time and date• pump-on-demand time and date• pump-room alarm time and date• motor-trouble time and date• power-on date and time• power-off date and time.General system information is stored for seven days, and events and alarms for 15 days. The information is retrievable through a USB slave communication port.
