OF HIGHLANDS
JUNE 2015
SAVE THE DATE
HOW CAN WE THANK YOU?
Read what the kids
are excited to do
for Summer!!!
The Spring Shake-Up gatherings
were such fun. For all who participated, but
especially to the hosts of this round of Shake
-Up parties, thank you. Mary Anna
McClendon, Sally & Dallis Copeland, and
Kay & Teeter Smith were wonderful hosts
who created warm, welcoming environ-
ments. You’ve set the stage for some great
Summer Shake—Ups!
We are so grateful to the Congrega-
tional Care Ministry Team and Joel and
Anne Porter, whose efforts during the end of
April provided food, fellowship, and com-
fort. In the matter of one week, members of
the team provided the Community Table
meal for Highlands, a lovely Sunday lunch-
eon to celebrate the Gap Singers from Rabun
Gap Nacoochee School, and a beautiful
reception following Sandra Mackey’s memo-
rial service. Thank you for your many ef-
forts!
There are four people who brighten
the day of anyone who is at the church office
during the week – Mozelle Edwards, Mona
Humphrey, Bri Jenkins, and Rita Paoletti.
These women guide and nurture our Son-
shine School children with joy and great
positive attitudes. Each afternoon, they can
be found walking through the church with a
friendly, “Hello!” and “Good
afternoon!” to anyone they encounter. We
are so grateful for their energy, compassion,
and kindness.
Charles Duke will be our Mullen Lecture speaker on Sunday, August 2 during the 11:00
worship service. “Charlie” will also be present on Monday, August 3 at 10:00 for a presentation
with visuals. Charlie was an astronaut aboard the Apollo 16 in 1972 that carried him and two
other astronauts to the moon. Charlie became the 10th person to walk on the lunar surface.
On the return to the earth, Charlie had the opportunity to make a space-walk, journeying
outside the space capsule. As he floated in space on one side of him the view was a brilliant full
moon and on the other side the earth hung as a crescent sliver of blue and white. Charlie de-
scribed this scene over and over again as, “Fantastic!”
Gifted with the combined abilities of storytelling and challenging others, Duke is in de-
mand worldwide as a keynote and motivational speaker. He is a man who not only entertains, but
encourages and inspires others to reach their goals and beyond. We are pleased to welcome him
to the First Presbyterian pulpit and hope you will make plans to attend his talk.
Heritage Sunday will happen on June 14th. We are so pleased to welcome the Rev. Dr.
Don Mullen to preach that Sunday. The 11 am service will be followed by a Welcome Back
Reception in Coleman Hall. Other important dates to remember this summer: Sunday, July 12th –
Church Picnic following the 11 am worship service. Plan to dress casually that Sunday! Sunday,
August 16th – Kirkin’ of the Tartans followed by a reception in Coleman Hall.

We were honored to have Ann Tiner as our guest
organist on May 3rd. Ann spent her career in
church music after studying at Auburn University,
Florida Southern, and the Hochshule für Musik in
Vienna, and now accompanies the WCU choral
ensembles.
The Sacred Sounds Bell Choir gave a musical offering
during worship on May 10th, ringing Earth and Stars as
the prelude, and When Morning Gilds the Skies as offer-
tory.
Lyn Ellen Burkette was our guest pianist on May 17th. Lyn is an Assistant Professor of Music at WCU with a Ph.D.
in music theory from Indiana University; she specializes in performing 20th and 21st century repertoire. Our favorite
flutist, Linda Lancaster, accompanied Lyn as well as the Chancel Choir on that same Sunday. Dr. Lancaster will be
performing with the Brevard Philharmonic this coming season.
Congregational Lunch, Sunday, May 17th
During the month of June, we will be taking up a special offering to aid the people of Nepal. Donations
will be forwarded to Presbyterian Disaster Assistance. PDA’s partners in Nepal, through ACT Alliance, have
been distributing immediate life-saving supplies since the first quake on April 25. Items such as water, food, shel-
ter and medication have been given to over 40,000 people in some of the most severely impacted districts. PDA
will continue the relief and assessment efforts.
The increased landslides aggravated by the second quake, together with the coming monsoon season in
June, pose numerous critical challenges for travel to the affected areas, particularly those which are located in
rural and remote areas. PDA is committed to the long-term response. As long-term recovery plans are developed,
PDA will accompany and further financially support our partners in the area to ensure a comprehensive recovery
is sustained.
If you would like to make a donation, you can drop it by the church office, or you may place a check in
the offering plate on Sunday. Please be sure to write “Nepal” in the memo.
PAGE 5 GET TO KNOW BRICE JENKINS, OUR SEMINARY INTERN
W e are so pleased to welcome Brice to serve alongside us this
summer as a part of his seminary training. His internship
officially begins June 1st. We hope you will have an opportunity to
meet and get to know him. Please consider the many ways you can
support Brice this summer. You can invite him to share a meal with
you or your family. You can attend a Sunday school class he teaches.
You can contribute to his stipend (approximately $4000 for the sum-
mer). You can offer him constructive feedback when he preaches or
teaches. Most of all, you can do what you do so well with your pas-
tors and leaders – you can receive his gifts and allow him to shine!
Where did you grew up, attend school, we’re connection to
Highlands?
I moved from Virginia Beach, VA to Highlands, NC in the summer
of 2000 when I was eight years old and attended Highlands School
from Grades 3 through 12. After graduating from Highlands School,
I attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where I
received a Bachelors Degree with Highest Honors in the field of Re-
ligious Studies. I now attend Princeton Theological Seminary in
Princeton, NJ.
While living in Highlands, I was blessed with the opportunity to get
involved with an amazing community, working at the Sports Page
Sandwich Shoppe and also at Wildcat Cliffs Country Club. While
attending UNC, I would return to Highlands during the summer to
work at Highlands Country Club. Needless to say, Highlands has always been my home.
What guided your decision to enter seminary?
From a young age, I have felt called to serve in ministry. After undergoing open heart surgery to repair a rare condi-
tion at eleven months old and later learning about my parents’ faith through the event, my service to God has always
held precedence in my life. When I decided to major in Religious Studies at UNC, I knew Seminary was the next logi-
cal step in my spiritual and academic education.
What area/areas of ministry do you feel drawn to?
Though I am currently leaving it up in the air, I have felt particularly drawn to academic teaching in a Seminary or Di-
vinity School. I love the academic setting, and I feel that proper theological education is important to the preparation
and formation of ministers.
What are you most looking forward to during your internship at FPCH?
I cannot wait to serve the Highlands community in a different capacity than before. I have never participated in an of-
ficial ministry setting, and since this will be the first time I have worked with FPCH, I am really excited to meet the
church members and form relationships with them. This internship will give me the opportunity to further discern my
call to follow and serve God.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
Throughout my four years at UNC Chapel Hill, I was involved in competitive rowing. I love rowing and continue to
actively train every day. During my first year at seminary, I served as a volunteer Assistant Coach with the Princeton
University Men’s Lightweight Rowing team. I plan to return and help with the team next year; it was an incredible
opportunity.
